Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson wants a new contract. This is not new news. But the latest reason for this discussion won't likely end with Jackson being any happier, as the Eagles are reportedly planning to place the franchise tag on Jackson before he gets to free agency.

Latest NFL News, Notes

That's according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who says to "count on" the Eagles franchising Jackson because the team will not let Jackson "walk without getting something in return."

Philly has from February 20 to March 5 to apply the franchise tag. After that, Jackson would become a free agent. Jackson's already said he's fine with playing under the franchise tag in 2012, probably because he'd be willing to make around $9.5 million guaranteed. (More than three times the value of the entire rookie deal he just finished playing out.)

A pile of disastrous events -- an insurance policy, missed team meetings, a fourth-quarter benching, getting called out by teammates, you name it -- are sandwiched between Jackson's holdout before 2011 and his impending free agency in 2012. That being said, the Eagles need Jackson. The explosive wide receiver had just 58 catches for 961 yards in 2011, but his value to the Eagles offense as a deep threat can't be understated.

Additionally, the Eagles may seek a trade with Jackson once they use the franchise tag on the wideout, according to McLane. There are plenty of other wideout-needy teams in the NFL who might be interested in giving Jackson a long-term deal, and the Eagles would love to get something back for him.

Could a long-term deal with Jackson still happen? Of course it could. But Jackson and agent Drew Rosenhaus want Jackson to be paid like a top-five wideout.

"I think right in that range," Jackson said last year. "Maybe top-5 in the NFL. ...My playmaking skills and abilities, my punt returns, and the ability to get the ball and score on any play. I mean, Fitzgerald, he's a special receiver -- don't get me wrong -- but he doesn't play special teams so that adds an extra edge to it."

Jackson's not "wrong," per se, when discussing how his skills make him a valuable commodity. The problem is his attitude, which is so poor -- at times -- that it's reduced his effectiveness on the field and made him a distraction off of it. That's not exactly the type of behavior that sends teams scrambling to throw big-time, long-term money at a player.

2. Victor Cruz has put up ONE, I repeat ONE, solid season -- Jackson has put up THREE; and again, Jackson is a threat in the return game.

Frannies you jump around more than politicians. You're not a very bright individual.

You're basing the Steve Smith release on the NY media? The same media that wants Coughlin fired every season. The same media that ripped Eli, then resurrected him into Jesus months later. Oh ok. You are a real piece of work.

product....you make good points about the ny media....i dont disagre with you....how is that slam on me? toddler! talk about jumping around

Cruz does not get double teamed more. Ive watched plenty of giant games and Nicks is the one who gets double teamed the most..once again do you even watch football?

sure am....missed one giant home game the last 8 years....cruz gets doubled way more now...

And thts why your not a general manager of a nfl team because if you would take a player based on 1 year over a player who has proven he is good and can keep up with the same numbers each year you wouldnt take Cruz. I guess you would take cruz over almost any other reciever to then because he had better numbers then a lot of top recievers

please keep up...i said id take cruz over jackson

im not bragging at all moron...you said the eagles have no heart and i brought up a situation that kills your arguement. Not sure you understand what bragging is tho. And yes i have a life too, and im not on here everyday either but i dont completly disappear like you when your team loses, especially with how much crap you talk about your teams before the games. You really are slow.."we are talking about football" You just brought up ryan howard struck out again and your coming at me saying were not talking about baseball?

I wouldnt say they did about as well when the phillies had the better record.

So product let me ask you, who would you take on your team right now.  Victor cruz or Deshawn Jackson?

Jackson.

Right now....

1. The Eagles already have a Victor Cruz type WR, his name is Jeremy Maclin -- they're the same size and are basically the same receiver; Maclin can also double as a return man.

2. Victor Cruz has put up ONE, I repeat ONE, solid season -- Jackson has put up THREE; and again, Jackson is a threat in the return game.

Jackson has more value for the Eagles than Cruz does for the reasons stated above.

If you wanna call the missed tackle him getting burned go for it..other then that he never got burned. Didnt cruz have only 3 catches first game? I dont even think Namdi was covering Cruz that much in both games. He opens up to entire field..while he is getting double teamed it leaves Maclin and Celek open who had real good years so yes..do you know anything about football? or watch it? Cruz does not get double teamed more. Ive watched plenty of giant games and Nicks is the one who gets double teamed the most..once again do you even watch football? And thts why your not a general manager of a nfl team because if you would take a player based on 1 year over a player who has proven he is good and can keep up with the same numbers each year you wouldnt take Cruz. guess the eagles had no heart either when they came back down 31-10 with 7 mins left to beat the giants in the 2010 season huh?

did i miss something? did you win championship anytime recently? like last 51 years? you want to brag about the regular season? WOW THATS SAD!  even the redskins beat us twice this year....does it matter? no....why? cause we are champs chump!

I think a lot of giant fans forget that they were only 9-7 this season.

We forget? why would we forget? that makes it more remarkable...plus we had 6 straight wins.... jets... cowboys... falcons... packers... niners....pats....pretty awesome!

you  are just a whiney baby nova!

1960!
