Once upon a time, Cris Carter and Randy Moss were teammates with the Minnesota Vikings. As such, when news arises about Moss, ESPN trots out Cris Carter to make some comments. And over the past couple of days, Carter's managed to make Moss, who recently announced his return to football, something that doesn't resemble happy.

Carter initially said that Moss could hop out of bed and run a 4.3 40-yard dash. But then he added later that Moss has a lot of "quit" in him.

“The one thing you have to address with Randy Moss is not a conditioning thing," Carter said. "It's not an age thing. It needs to be addressed. I believe it's the elephant in the room. It's that thing called quit.

“And Randy, not like any other superstar I've met, he has more quit in him than any of those other players. So I need to addresses that. That's what (New England Patriots coach Bill) Belichick did when he brought him over from Oakland. He told him he wasn't going to have it."

Latest NFL News, Notes

Moss had taken criticism from Carter pretty well, not mentioning it on one of his many USTREAM sessions. He's also been surprisingly contrite since announcing his return. But then he took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon and fired some shots back at his former teammate.

"@criscarter80 its sad how u stroked ur own ego when u were suppose to b my mentor!then u wonder why karma bites u in the ass! #goodlukwithhof," Moss tweeted.

Quick translation: we're not boys anymore. I mean, it's one thing to fire back at Carter for something he did during his career, but ripping Carter for not making the Hall of Fame when one of the arguments against Carter is that Moss overshadowed him in Minnesota is kind of tough.

That being said, Carter stood up on his analyst pedestal and took some shots at a guy who's supposed to be his boy. He shouldn't be surprised if said guy, who doesn't usually operate with a filter in place, fires right back.

Carter Loves Moss

I have listened to Mike&Mike in the morning, The Herd etc... where Cris Carter has been a regular guest for quite some time and I have never heard Carter denigrate Moss at all.  Carter is, in my opinion, one of the most respected faces in football.  I believe these comments may have been taken out of context, given Moss's current (non-playing) situation.  Carter loves Moss, and has indicated as such a thousand times every time he speaks on a talk radio show or on television.  Carter has as much respect for Moss as one can have for a friend and former teammate.  If there was something which was taken out of context, and I truly believe there was, I blame the interviewer for not clarifying his comments.

Why do people on all these blogs always defend the weak because they tried harder.     If we are looking at this that way here is my thought

Tim Tebow is the best QB in NFL because he is a great man, teammate, leader in community.... way more so than carter ever was.   He also has like a 10-5 record as a starter.   I know rodgers and brees are great..... but Tim Tebow puts so much heart into becoming a better football player and always plays at a 110%

LOL you jokers need to focus on real life and quit living in good man good teammate fairy tale land.......donating to charity and building hospitals in ethiopia do not make you better at football.

This is not a dig on Tebow.... I love him and what he stands for....... but everyone on here keeps talking about how awesome carter was other than his actual stats.

Randy Moss rips Cris Carter for 'quit' comments

So what if he taked plays off, whatever works,,,,save your speed when your. Going to get the ball or you have to stretch the field, so if he didn't take plays off would he still have the same numbers or even better? What percentage of plays did he take off anyway 2%5% 50%? Whatever approach he used it worked so who cares, most of his teams won, maybe not in Oakland but that team was doomed you tell me even the year he broke the rec td record that taking plays off hurt his game or his 16-0 team?

Randy Moss rips Cris Carter for 'quit' comments

Yes he did fail a drug test, but came back a better person and straightened his life up.  Basically, he became a better man and also became one of the best receivers in history.  With Carter at his side, he at least learned how to run a descent route, and without carter he went back to running sloppy routes again.  Moss will continue to be a mess for the rest of his career.  He's tall, big deal.  Just about every receiver in the pros is over  6'5" today.  So, now what do you have as an advantage?  Nothing. Because it's been proven that he doesn't have the best of hands.

Randy Moss rips Cris Carter for 'quit' comments

Did somebody say Carter made catches that Moss couldn't?  That is a joke.  Moss and TO while being difficult changed the game of football.  Moss is an all time great while Carter was just really good.  That is why Carter has toed this line for awhile of acting like he is some kind of mentor for Moss, but really envying him because he good never reach his level.

Randy Moss rips Cris Carter for 'quit' comments

As a lifelong Vikings fan, I've watched both.  Cris Carter is telling the truth.  Should he have though....I don't think so.  Carter should have taken a high road. What Moss said, is what Moss says.  I'm not at all shocked by his reply. I don't fault him for the harsh words back to Carter.  That is pretty messed up of Carter.  I'd be just as pissed as Moss was of the comments.  Just wouldn't have taken the HOF cheapshot.

Randy Moss rips Cris Carter for 'quit' comments

Didn't Cris Carter fail a drug test while he played in the NFL? Isn't that like quitting? Just wondering.
