Manning

By Josh Katzowitz

It’s generally been reported that Peyton Manning has had three procedures on his neck in the past two years -- which caused him to miss all of last season. But Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks is reporting that Manning actually had a fourth surgery sometime between May 23 and Sept. 9 of last year.

Making matters a little more opaque, Banks also reports that Manning potentially has developed bone spurs in his neck that the Colts believe will require another surgery (and possibly, gulp, another fusion surgery).

The unreported procedure occurred last summer in Chicago and it was a follow-up to Manning’s initial neck surgery. Since this occurred during the lockout, the club physicians only had very little contact with Manning.

Manning's Offseason Saga
"I wouldn't have anything to say about all of that, one way or another,” Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, told SI on Wednesday.

According to Banks’ source, Manning badly wanted to return for the Week 16 Houston game last year, and he participated in an “organized and fully-scripted 30-play practice session” the week before in front of former executive Bill Polian and former coach Jim Caldwell.

More from Banks:
Polian was said to be initially frustrated by the extent and scope of the workout, which he then viewed as a surprising attempt to play in a meaningless situation at the end of a long and defeat-filled season in Indianapolis. League sources say the former leader of the Colts front office was taken off-guard by the intensity and pace of the 30-play session that Manning took part in. Polian was under the belief that it would be conducted at walk-through speed, but instead it was held at typical regular-season tempo with scripted play calls.

A day later, league sources said, the team's strength and conditioning staff impressed upon Polian that it had wanted to see how Manning responded to a fast-paced and scripted workout, because his recovery was not going to reach the next level if he simply continued to lob passes at a leisurely pace. And the practice was conducted from the 25-yard line on in because that was then roughly Manning's ceiling in terms of his arm strength throwing the ball.
Make sure to click the above SI.com link (or this one right here) to read more details about Manning’s past and his possible future. It's strong reporting and fascinating material.

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

$ and maybe more? I really don't think he's going to comeback. This is all about trying to land that 26 million that he probably feels he's owed. If you are that bad off that you still may need another fusion surgury why would you take the chance? Irsay is going to dump Manning and in the end is going to look like he tried to keep Peyton from himself, while Peyton gets sacked while playing for the Fins or Skins and ends his career being carried off the turf. A smart man knows when to walk away.

Credit where credit's due! Who'd a thunk?

I'm really impressed that Katzowitz, and CBS Sports are so willing to credit another organization and reporter. Too often one organization will mention in passing the "scoop" reporter, and then shamelessly steal the news. Hats off to Katzowitz and CBS for not just crediting Banks, but also RECCOMENDING that people read the original Banks report!

I hope this continues!

another highly intelligent post by EL C..careful you dont hurt yourself jumping on the Eli bandwagon! Eli did look impressive this season but his play coincided with the return of key defensive players.. time will tell but his stats are near what peyton has accomplished with VERY weak teams.

the jim everett  comments ...well all i have to say is you must be frickin chrissy everett - dumbest post of the year!

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

Manning needs to come clean about the extent of his neck surgeries and the prognosis from his physician regarding permanent damage to the neck, numbness, loss of strength, impact on the triceps muscle, pain and the extent of numbnerss in his fingers associated with the damaged nerve.  Peyton also needs to come forward and be honest abpout nerve damage and if he has had a rhizotomy to fry the damaged nerve which the stem cell treatment in Europe attempte4d to regenerate the destroyed nerve.

No, I am not a doctor but someone who has suffered a similar injury where physicians unanimously stated after every treatment in polite words that I was in the 5 pervent of paqtients that was screwed.  Yes, I am destined to a life of incessant nerve pain, loss of feeling in the triceps mucsle and fingers as well as 65-75 percent of the strength in my arm.  Peyton Manning has all of the experts in the world working with him and it would appear at this juncture that he has the same problem and diagnosis that has transpired with me.  That is phycisians telling me I am screwed.  Peyton's medical team natural fused his vertebrae and cleaned out his damaged dics without using modern technology of spacers replacing discs so he could possibly play again.  I am sure Peyton has had numerous epidurals to try to ascertain nerve damage and affected areas as well as what could possibly work to retain strength, feeling and reduce pain.   But I am a realist as my neurosurgeon expected almost instant relief post surgery and told me right away that I was in that 5 percent where surgery did not work and they would try to do anything to help me.  Well, they have as is the case with Peyton and he should come clean on his prognosis in terms of long term and short term.  Quit the politics of when or will he play aqnd come clean with what the doctors are actually tellling him.. For example, I was told that I am structurally sound in my neck but i will experience a life of pain that will increase, degenerative arthritis in the neck as well as ongoing numbness and loss of strength.  peyton should be a man and step up and be honest as he already knows what his prognosis is at this time.  Cut the BS in the media and just be a man.

He maybe the best player at the QB position in football. I hate to measure him against all time, I would not want to be the player that knocks him out of the NFL. This latest news is troubling and raises even more questions. I don't think Indy is going to pay him the 28 large. Payton should sit out another year and then find a team that is ready for a nice run. If he still has the desire to play. Me I would hang around for the 28 million, but that is just the way I roll.

If Peyton keeps this up, he's gonna end up lookin like Herman Munster.

When informed of the need for additional surgery, Peyton said "DARN, DARN, DARN, DARN!"

Hello. What? Germany calling? Yes, this Herman Munster. Who? Dr. Frankenstein?

The NFL is s business...blah blah blah...we have all heard that over and over.  I respect Peyton as a QB and a person, He has been an asset to the Colts and the NFL as a whole....but $28 milliion is $28 million.  There are too many questions concerning his neck for me to gamble $28 million on.  If he gets traded and fully recovers than great for Peyton and whatever team he is playing for at that time.  No grudges, no monday morning QBing.....but as it stands now, Peyton has too many medical questions up in the air and those do not equate to $28 million.  So I think it would be best that he is traded.   Honestly Peyton is a smart guy and not married, so I am sure he has quite the nest egg.  He has no worries except on how he wants to spend his days on this earth, healthy or in chronic neck pain.  Good luck to him.

peyton's done. if he comes back at all it's only to try and upstage eli, who all of a sudden looks like the greatest manning QB of all time. can't argue with 2 super bowls? even peyton only won 1, and that was against rex grossman. in fact, looking back at peyton's career, is he anything more than a glorified jim everett? big time against weak opponents. after all, peyton played against weak ass houston/jacksonville 4 times a year for the last 12 years. that's alot of stats vs. weak teams.
