Manning

By Josh Katzowitz

It’s generally been reported that Peyton Manning has had three procedures on his neck in the past two years -- which caused him to miss all of last season. But Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks is reporting that Manning actually had a fourth surgery sometime between May 23 and Sept. 9 of last year.

Making matters a little more opaque, Banks also reports that Manning potentially has developed bone spurs in his neck that the Colts believe will require another surgery (and possibly, gulp, another fusion surgery).

The unreported procedure occurred last summer in Chicago and it was a follow-up to Manning’s initial neck surgery. Since this occurred during the lockout, the club physicians only had very little contact with Manning.

Manning's Offseason Saga
"I wouldn't have anything to say about all of that, one way or another,” Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, told SI on Wednesday.

According to Banks’ source, Manning badly wanted to return for the Week 16 Houston game last year, and he participated in an “organized and fully-scripted 30-play practice session” the week before in front of former executive Bill Polian and former coach Jim Caldwell.

More from Banks:
Polian was said to be initially frustrated by the extent and scope of the workout, which he then viewed as a surprising attempt to play in a meaningless situation at the end of a long and defeat-filled season in Indianapolis. League sources say the former leader of the Colts front office was taken off-guard by the intensity and pace of the 30-play session that Manning took part in. Polian was under the belief that it would be conducted at walk-through speed, but instead it was held at typical regular-season tempo with scripted play calls.

A day later, league sources said, the team's strength and conditioning staff impressed upon Polian that it had wanted to see how Manning responded to a fast-paced and scripted workout, because his recovery was not going to reach the next level if he simply continued to lob passes at a leisurely pace. And the practice was conducted from the 25-yard line on in because that was then roughly Manning's ceiling in terms of his arm strength throwing the ball.

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

I don't think it really matters whether he had 3 or 4.  Either way, the bottom line is that his neck was a mess, still is a mess, and may continue to be a mess.  And he should probably not be screwing around with it.  I know he wants to compete, and no athlete wants to end their career like that.  But this isn't a foot or elbow we're talking about.  The central nervous system is not a plaything.  For the sake of his wife and kids, he should quite while he's ahead, and go into coaching or scouting or something.

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

I've had a cervical spine fusion and the results were better than I had ever hoped for. For the 1st time in years, I am pain free. That being said not everyone gets the same results. The surgeon does his part and the patient must do their part and listen to the post op instructions. As far as I am concerned Peyton Manning should just retire from the game or risk permanent damage to his body. If he decides to play again, it will be because his ego is getting the best of him.

I was only made aware of him having three last year.  The fourth must have been achieved within days of one, I figure.  An hardcore surgery person Peyton is.

Everyone needs to accept the fact that he will never step foot on the field again, and if he does, he's very foolish.
Careful, he could be leading your team next year.

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

This whole Manning situation that is unfolding is a pile of shit. The number of procedures is immaterial. The only thing that matters is Peytons performance and clearance from his operating and attending neurosurgeon to resume playing football. He knows a thing or two more about the health of Peytons fused vertebra and the risks involved than the multiple internet neurosurgeons that are so prevalent on these boards. Especially since he will be the one that will be legally on the hook if Peyton resumes play and has the catastrophic injury so many of these internet doctors are predicting. Misinformation after misinformation. Just let it play out without all the hyperbolic scenarios and predictions based on shit. I know thats asking way to much of the media, but all these unnamed sources and speculation is ridiculous. We only have a few weeks before Peyton will be cut from the Colts anyway.

Fascinating material that doesn't have a single named source.  In other words it's "strong" only in the sense that it's, big surprise, provocative in what it says.  Strong report

ing in the journalistic sense would have someone actually going on record with something of substance instead of this crap that could very well made up.

I disagree completely.  For you to say that because the sources aren't named therefore the report is invalid would be saying the Jets lockerroom is not dysfunctional.  Several unnamed sources spoke during the season about how the lunatics were running the asylum and how there was no support for Marc Sanchez.  We find out after the season that those things turn out to be true and leave people wondering if Rex Ryan can turn things around or if he has lost the lockerroom so far that he can never right the ship.

Can it be considered cowardly to send messages through the media that you don't assign your name to...yes, I could see that argument.  But it's a stretch to say the message isn't true.
