Tebow WILL have competition next year

By Josh Katzowitz

We’ve been asking this for a while now: Is Tim Tebow guaranteed to be the Broncos starting quarterback next year? Our own Ryan Wilson brought this up in mid-January and listed a number of free agent quarterbacks Denver could pursue in an effort to knock Tebow out of his starting spot (including Matt Flynn, Jason Campbell and (yep) Kyle Orton).

Even coach John Fox has now confirmed that nobody is going to hand Tebow anything heading into 2012. That’s because Fox said Monday, via the Denver Post, that the team would acquire two quarterbacks in the offseason to compete against Tebow.

"Numbers wise that's accurate,” Fox said. "Who, what, where, when, what market -- it's still way too early how we get those quarterbacks."

You’ll recall that Tebow a was tad controversial last year as he continued to play poorly (for the most part) but still led his team to the AFC West title and a playoff victory against the Steelers (really, by the end of Denver’s run, our colleague Pete Prisco was one of the few who remained steadfast in his belief that Tebow is not a legit NFL quarterback).

What to do with Tebow?

But that doesn’t mean the read option offense Fox and Mike McCoy had to install midway through the season when Denver decided to replace Orton with Tebow will continue to work in 2012. Tebow still has to prove he has the arm strength, the accuracy and the ability to play effectively in the pocket.

“I think at some point he’ll have to be if he wants to play a long time,” Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said in January. “That’s one area he’s going to have to improve to be elite in this league. But the things he does running the ball -- he can make some throws, it’s just being comfortable doing it. He’s got to get better at it, and when he does, the sky’s the limit for him.”

Of course, the Broncos will HAVE to bring in at least two quarterbacks, because Tebow and practice-squader Adam Weber are the only signal-callers under contract for next year. Brady Quinn -- who apparently had a third-down package set for him in the playoffs (was he planning to Tim Tebow Tim Tebow?) -- is a free agent, and there probably isn’t much reason for him to return Denver.

So, for now, Tebow is the starter.

"He's going to come into our camp as the starting quarterback," Fox said. "He's young. He can get better."

Yeah, what does he mean by that? What can Tebow do better?

Um, this.

"It's the precision on the passing, it's the accuracy, the footwork, the mechanics, the rhythm, the timing, the quickness, the release. Everything," Broncos general manager Brian Xanders said recently. "And he wants to work at it. And he's dedicated. He's going to work really hard at improving those things. .. We're excited about him improving in those areas."

Until, perhaps, the Broncos can find somebody else who’s better than what we saw from Tebow last year.

Gipper10... I'm a die-hard ND fan as you, but didn't Quinn get his chance with the Browns? What was his starting record? Let's move to the next one...

Tebow WILL have competition next year

Once people understand that Tim Tebow isn't one of todays typical whiny professional athletes(not all athletes are this way and most spend a lot of money and their time to help the communities in which they live) and some of the basic concepts of the NFL they will find that this article was a waste of time to read.
  1. Tebow had great success for half the season and the play-offs in his second year. He did not ask for a new contract, more money or complain about anything as we have seen other players do in the past after having some success and not liking their rookie contracts.
  2. In the NFL there is always competition at any spot and it is especially so at the qb position. The Broncos stated that Tebow would be their starter as it looks now but they still need a back up and its encouraged to have competition to motivate players. As of yet I haven't heard him gripping about Denver looking at other qb's.
  3. Yes the Broncos installed the read option offense for Tebow, what some might call "dumbing the game down". Tebow has always said he needed to get better at running the offense and reading the defense as well as working on arm strength, accuracy and be a pocket passer. No surprise or denial here.
  4. He has the support of his teammates and he definitely gives his support, even when a team leader like Champ Bailey says “That’s one area he’s going to have to improve to be elite in this league." which ways said in a positive way.
That sums up this article nice and easy.  Denver isn't looking to draft a rookie qb so they have to start all over. It looks like they are looking at their d-line(mock drafts on ESPN and  They want to bring in experienced nfl qb's as a back up and if Tebow doesn't improve of course they will look to a back up.  Matt Flynn would be a great choice to bring in having NFL experience, sat behind a super bowl winning Aarron Rodgers and was coached by McCarthy, a qb guru.  Good call.  I don't get the feeling NFL players care about religion or how religious you are as long as you can win.  There are so much media acces and internet coverage its no wonder rumors have started to fly around.

tebow just got his feet wet.. you go from third string to starting qb you have to get a little respect, he did his thing on talent alone, it wasnt supernatural
the man knows how to lead,, he is an Alpha the sooner the broncos front office gets it and start coaching this guy up the better.

i dont get it why we have these rules about an nfl prototype of a qb there arer more of them in the nfl qb trash can. why can
we enjoy tebow the way he is, i am a steeler fan and the beauty of the game is when a simple play that he ran to perfection
beat such a intricate and smart defense that the steelers run.. kudos to tebow... folks you have to enjoy the game. im tired
of looking at replicas, all these prototypes look the same five steps back and heave the ball,  i hear steve young comments
i guess he also forgot how bad he bomb out in tampa..

Tebow WILL have competition next year

i dont understand denver front office including coach fox, i understand that they didnt draft him, he comes from a system were they ran the ball and move the pocket for him to throw. instead of putting this guy down so much, they should encouraging him. telling the media that he is going to have competition, so what are you going to do? bring another rookie and blow another year. does any one remember how many games john elway won
in his first year in denver, maybe john elway is scared of tebowmania, denver fans might forget him..

Tebow WILL have competition next year

Every pro quarterback has competition going into training camp each year, so no surprise there. But like the song, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Any competition is welcome when you have the determination and desire that Tebow has. The big trick is balancing out where you're putting the money, because the supporting cast has more of an effect than many want to think. Granted, an elite quarterback will improve any team, but that quarterback will not achieve the same without good players around them. Tim helps bring his teammates together, and with that they will achieve more. And as far as I'm concerned, any improvement the Broncos and Tebow can make on this season will be perfectly fine by me.

Tebow WILL have competition next year

I haven't yet bought into Tebowmania, but if he DOESN'T make it as a bonafide NFL quarterback it won't be for lack of effort as it seems the guy isn't afraid of hard work and practice.....think what JaMarcus Russell could have done if he had been willing to work half as much as Tebow and spend less time at McDonalds.

Tebow WILL have competition next year

I hope it turns out you're wrong, but I'm afraid you're right. If he had come into the NFL willing to switch to T.E., Full Back, possibly even Linebacker. He might be a Pro Bowler at this point. If this season goes bad, maybe a trade and another bad season, only if's at this point. How late would a position change be an option?
