RG3 probably won't throw at combine, wants 4.4 40

Robert Griffin III is one of the more interesting athletes at this year's NFL combine. He's a big-time athlete whose stock can only go up as the draft approaches. If he shines at the combine and at his Pro Day -- now scheduled for March 21 -- teams will scramble for the No. 2 pick the Rams currently hold.

But it won't be because of his throws, as Griffin said on the Dan Patrick Show that he "probably" wouldn't throw at the Combine.

"I don’t think so," Griffin said Tuesday. "It’s still up in the air but I'm probably not going to throw."

RG3, as Rob Rang noted recently, already said he was unlikely to throw at the combine. Griffin might not need to throw, however. He's going to run the 40-yard dash, and if he posts a sub-4.4-second time, it's going to generate some buzz. Griffin thinks he can.

"I think there's a possibility," Griffin said before acknowledging he'd gone under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash before.

Griffin ran track in high school (he owns a pile of Texas state records) and early in his career at Baylor (he set a Midwest Regional record for the 400-meter hurdles) so speed isn't an issue. Size is Griffin's issue; as CBSSports.com's Clark Judge pointed out in his recent combine preview, Griffin's measurements in the coming week are something to watch.

(The size versus speed thing is also why the RG3-Cam Newton comparisons are just silly. Newton's 6'5", 248 pounds. Griffin's 6'2" 220. If Newton could run a 4'4" he'd be Superman. Literally.)

But it's speed that will really cause teams to fall in love with Griffin. If he goes sub 4.4, the biggest winner is St. Louis, because the auction for that top pick is going to get hot and heavy.

Speaking of auctioning for Griffin's services, it's also worth noting that RG3 signed with Adidas. The shoe company announced the news on Tuesday and Griffin confirmed it on Patrick's show. And we dug up this first Adidas commercial with Griffin, who Adidas is wisely marketing as "RG III."

You know, what with their three-stripe logo and all.

The number 2 back, Stewart, outplayed him nearly every game. Shockey is no longer considered a pro bowl TE. How do you rate an offensive line in the top5? What is your criteria? First i said best DUO running backs and Jordan Gross, Matt Kalil are to of the better lineman in the league and the were third in the league in rushing, so if they are not top 5... His speed doesnt mean anything if he can't disect defenses and understand where he needs to throw the ball and throw it accurately. He will win as many superbowls as Michael Vick. Most didn't even have a "big" arm. Bradshaw, Kelly, Montana, Marino, Fouts, Stabler, Unitas, Griese, Staubach, Dawson, Lamonica, Graham, Aikman, Anderson, Bledsoe, Esiason, Rypien, Theismann, and Warner. How about the current non dynamic QB's. Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger, Cutler, Eli and Peyton. OK, let's look at the "dynamic" guys. Vick, Jackson, Garrard, Young, Newton, McNabb. Hmmmm. The evidence would seem to point to speed, running ability, and big arm not being that important to an NFL QB. There have been 46 Super Bowls. How many of those winning QB's were dynamic, and won with their legs? The answer is NONE. [ Reply to Comment ]

Mcnabb had a few decent years in a system where every QB who took his spot looked just as good, vick had one good year in that same system, almost all of them through too many picks and make bad decisions especially in key playoff games. None have won anything.. Yet every year we have to hear the hype about it. Speed doesnt mean shit for a QB, decision making and intelligence do. Id rather take a risk on a player hoping i get the next aaron rodgers tom brady drew brees peyton manning, then taking a chance i might get the next vince young or michael vick.... This guy will be a huge bust, as will cam in a few years, people thought vince was good after one year too, but i havent seen a consistant running QB yet, its easy to throw 5000 yards and 30 interceptions when ur down 30 to 0 every game but when they get to be a legitimate team and face complex coverages cam will throw so many bad throws that he got away with last year and they will all get picked. Just like you arent gonna see a white adrian peterson or revis anytime soon ur not gonna see a black tom brady, people dont like to admit that human beings are different, no white guy is ever gonna break the 200m speed records but speed doesnt matter for a qb and no running qb has won anything and none ever will, cuz the defenses in the playoffs lick their chops when they see one [ Reply to Comment ]

It is his mental attitude that will make or break his NFL career. If he is all about "himself" and pointing fingers everywhere but himself, then he is doomed. He has the athletic traits, it is what his mind and mouth do, that I am wary about. I hope he has great family values and if he lives by them, he will go far. Not throwing during Pro Day......sorry but cannot understand that. Like somebody said, running sub 4.4....big deal unless he will throw and then also be on the receiving end. NFL QB's are not drafted to be runners.....except Tebow who is a flash in the pan.... [ Reply to Comment ]

It's like showing up for an audition at a symphony orchestra and telling them you won't play your violin, but you'll show them how you hold it. Boasting about your 40 time is ridiculous - who cares?
