Green Bay keeps Finley for two more years, is Flynn  next? (Getty Images)

By Ryan Wilson

There were concerns heading into the offseason that free agent tight end Jermichael Finley, who hauled in 131 passes for 1,744 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Packers since 2009, would want to be paid like a wide receiver. Turns out, the two sides found common ground nearly two weeks before the start of free agency; Finley has signed a two-year deal with Green Bay worth slightly less than $15 million. ProFootballTalk.com originally reported the news and Finley confirmed it on Twitter.

As PFT noted, the average value of Finley's new contract -- roughly $7.5 million -- splits the difference between the franchise tag values for tight ends ($5.4) and wide receivers ($9.4).

Finley made $1.2 million in base salary last season.

Signing Finley means that the Packers now have the franchise tag still available to them to use as they see fit. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein tweets that "I anticipate the Packers using the franchise tag on (Matt) Flynn now. They'll take the $14 million cap hit and then deal him to somebody."

We wrote about this possibility on January 3 when Silverstein first floated the idea of a Packers tag and trade:

Silverstein [writes] that the move isn't without risk for the Packers. Putting aside the illegality of a tag and trade, there's also the issue of having a $14 million backup on your roster if other teams aren't sufficiently interested in trading for him. Which means that team president Ted Thompson would have to work with Flynn's agent "behind the scenes to find a trading partner and then negotiate a deal suitable to Flynn."

Silverstein was told by a "prominent agent who has represented a franchise player" that Green Bay could be in line for a first-round pick at minimum for Flynn, and maybe a first- and third-rounder.

That sounds, well, extreme, especially since Hue Jackson already traded for Carson Palmer.

Almost two months later and it still sounds extreme.

Packers sign Finley to 2-year deal, Flynn next?

The Packers needed to sign Jermichael Finley.  He is a tolid TE and makes the team better when he's on the field.  Glad to see this signing was low key, I didn't hear any grumbling from either side, they handled it professionally which hardly happens anymore.

Finley is 24. Catching can be improved; athleticism, height, arm span, etc, cannot b taught.

Good move on both sides.

Both are and will be bad moves by the Packers....So, do it, Im a Lions fan.  Flynn will be a bust just like Kolb.  Finley can't catch either, so I hope he can block.  They should tag Wells and keep their all-Pro center

Packers sign Finley to 2-year deal, Flynn next?

I'm not sure if its the way I woke up this morning or if its simply a matter of logic over rose-covered glasses - but - I have a bad feeling about this signing (regarding its salary cap implications) and the potential cost if Finley doesn't deliver not to mention while the Flynn franchise-and-trade scenario sounds great, its also highly unlikely. Where are morons like Dan Snyder or Al Davis (RIP) when you need them (to make this work)?!?!?

That Flynn franchise-and-trade deal is genius, and I know who would be an ideal taker: Cleveland Browns with their second pick in the first round. Two late picks in the first round gives the Pack options to plug holes in their defense or to take a legit RB to give them more than just an aerial attack.

I'm not thrilled with the Finley deal but I'm not pissed either. I'd rather have seen the money go to a couple of the defensive free agents. I'd look for a happy Finley to live up to his hype next season...and wouldn't that be beautiful. Without the drops he is the third best TE in the NFL.

Wow!  I cant believe he is getting that kind of money after the year he just had.  And needless to say the last game of the year!  All I saw out of him was drop after drop....the season ended the way it began in my eyes. He just couldnt catch the ball and especially when it really mattered.  His drops really cost us the playoff game this year.  But kudos he got paid. And thats what its all about.   Im still staying away from him in fantasy next year.

As far as Flynn goes, if we can tag him and get a 1st rd pick for him..lets do it.  Cause we definitely dont need a $14m backup qb.  Kids got talent and smarts.  Oakland has to be kicking themselves for trading for Palmer when they could have had a younger qb with more promise than Palmer.

Whitebread your post was one of the worst an uneducated post i have read lately, the packers are built through the draft and AJ hawk actually took a pay cut to stay with the team he wasn't resigned for more money...
