The Saints are currently, as our own Mike Freeman reported on Wednesday, pretty far apart in their talks with quarterback Drew Brees on a new contract. This is bad news for the Saints, bad news for Saints fans, and not good news for Brees either.

But it could be good news for New Orleans All-Pro guard Carl Nicks, who would likely receive the franchise tag if the team and Brees can work out a deal. Because, if we understand him correctly, he has no interest in being given the franchise tag.

"I don't want to be franchised!!!!" Nicks tweeted on Wednesday.

Naturally the response from Nicks' followers (he only has 800 as he joined just five days ago) was to assume he wants to hit the free-agent market and leave New Orleans. He says that's not the case.

"So I guess people are getting hot so I'll just say this... I want to be a saint but I want what's fare... Be mad... If u don't like it...Don't follow me!!!!" Nicks tweeted.

Nicks also has a slew of tweets on his page about a countdown. That's a countdown to March 5, when the Saints face a deadline for utilizing the franchise tag. Nicks tweets that his "anxiety is on a hundred thousand trillion!...march 5 is a big day!!??"

If New Orleans can't reach a deal with Brees between now and March 5, they will use the franchise tag on their quarterback. If the Saints can work out a deal with Brees, either Nicks or free-agent-to-be wideout Marques Colston will likely receive the franchise tag. Nicks is the best guess since he's a young, interior offensive lineman with an All-Pro award and two Pro Bowl appearances. He would be extremely difficult to re-sign on the open market.

Speaking of difficult to sign, if the Saints allow both Colston and Nicks to leave via free agency, it's not going to make Brees any happier about signing his new deal either. It's quite the conundrum for New Orleans right now.

Carl Nicks: 'I don't want to be franchised!!!!'

I think it is pretty retarded that if teams want to keep a player it drags on and on. Clearly Brees IS the Saints and should get Brady $$$. Nicks is clearly one of the top OGs in football and should get want top OGs are getting. So, call them in or go to their house, sit down and talk about what it will take to keep them. Waiting for other teams to get in play in dumb and will cost you even more money. You are winning with these guys and you should keep them. I know Brees is going nowhere so make the deal. He brought NO a SB and that is not in question. What else are you going to do without 2 of your best players. Yes, a OL can be replaced easier than your QB but you should have gave Brees a new deal 2 years ago and avoiding this mess, same with Nicks. Colston is another story. I believe Brees can do just as good without him without much drop off. In the end, I don't think player should cry to much about the tag. It put enough $$$ in pocket for a very nice life after football. You give me 1,000,000 and I would be doing nothing but laing on a beach in Palau or Fiji for the rest of my life. I don't really want to hear to much crying over a sure 8 or 9 million.

Brees' deal will get done and like it or not Nicks is going to get the franchise tag and the saints will work to keep colston, his open market value is not as high as Nicks. All this talk about the saints being far apart with Brees is a negotiating ploy be his agent to try and take the leverage of the franchise tag away from brees and get the most he can in a long term deal. This locks up 2 of the 3 for next year and gives them the best chance to keep all 3. This isn't mickey loomis' first rodeo he knows what he is doing.

Carl Nicks: 'I don't want to be franchised!!!!'

I always hated the money aspect of football. The O-line doesn't make what they should just because they aren't in the spotlight. I understand fans pay to see a diving catch and a player breaking 5 tackles with pure determination to score. I think about how much ticket prices are gonna go up each year because 14 mil won't be enough for Brees this year. I know, supply and demand...  I think that the Saints have a salary cap and if they could give Brees a blank check that they probably would. I know Brees is a good guy because if he ever got into trouble, it would be in the media. I don't know what the Saint and Brees are talking about and no one does except Brees/agent and Saints. I do know that Nicks doesn't want to be franchised because he said so and 800 followers blow it out of proportion by thinking he wants a trade. Turns out I don't know anything but was fun anywhoo. Oh and with pick #5 the Buccaneers select Dontari Poe, surprised? me too.

Brees is such a great teammate, that he doesn't care if the Saints lose an All-Pro gaurd and a Pro-Bowl WR. As long as he gets his.

I wish more people on these boards understood that although football is our passion, in reality it's a business.  Brees is a top 3 qb in the NFL, he just broke the NFL passing record.  He's also in a union, a massive union with a membership that doesn't appreciate or even allow their superstar peers to "take less" or take the "home team discounts" we fans want them to take.   Less for Brees means less for every quarterback that's not as good as Brees......

I've seen enough Brees interviews and read enough about the things the guy has done for charities North American wide, let alone the crazy money he spent helping Katrina victims and the enormous amount of time he put in helping those people for years.   If it was really all up to Brees, I think he would have signed an extension 2 years ago.  He's a smart guy, he's not a degenerate gambler and he's not a drug addict, he has more money then he'll need or his kids will ever need the rest of their lives.

But it's not all completely up to Brees....

yet another stupid comment from red spelling matters on wouldn't of made a comment at all if the guy wasn't black, you racist goof.what would thug bertuzzi be doing if he didn't play hockey?

Twitter? LOL  Wow.  You thought you were on twitter when you typed that? Whatever drugs you're doing, STOP NOW !!!  LMAO

But yeah you got me, I'm a huge racist.  I mean yeah, I bought a house knowing in advance there is a black man on one side and a black woman married to a white man on the other side, but I'm racist.  I hate the people from Pakistan across the street too... that's why I bought this house, it was hate.

Yesterday I was standing on my deck talking to my black neighbour while he was in his back yard for about a half hour, the whole time I was saying to myself, "self, you'd like him way more if he was white".

You got me !!!!! Damn !!!!!!!!!!!  Don't tell anybody though, ok?

None of these players want to be franchised. If Brees would lower his demands, they would be able to sign both. But if Brees wants the moon, and comes to terms soon, then Nicks will be franchised. Brees is such a great teammate, that he doesn't care if the Saints lose an All-Pro gaurd and a Pro-Bowl WR. As long as he gets his.

He would look great in Red and Gold in KC.  They desperately need someone like this in the interior of that O line.  They've got the money to do it, the need and heck they might as well draft another O lineman with their 11th pick as well.  That would be a beastly O line that could protect the likes of this guy named Peyton Manning possibly?  Sign Solai as well at DT, and that's one dangerous dangerous team in a weak division.
