The first franchise tag has been placed, and Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson is the lucky recipient of it.

Well, lucky in as much, as he’ll make about $9.5 million for 2012, but not so lucky in that Jackson has badly wanted a long-term deal for the past two seasons. Lucky in that Jackson can begin to rebuild his reputation after a terrible end of 2011 when we wondered about his bad attitude. Unlucky in that if Jackson were to suffer a significant injury, his prospects for a big-time deal after 2012 will diminish greatly.

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

DeSean's forgettable season
Before the end of last season, the Eagles might have felt they needed to reward Jackson -- ranked No. 6 in our free agent wide receiver rankings -- with the long-term deal in order to keep him happy. After all, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2009-10, but his play fell off last year when he caught only four touchdown passes.

More damaging than that, though, was his attitude. He missed meetings, the Eagles benched him in the fourth quarter of the Patriots game, and teammates openly questioned his effort.

Jackson and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said all along he was a top-five receiver, but he certainly didn’t play like -- or act like -- one.

For his part, Jackson later apologized for his actions and, when asked if he was OK if the Eagles tagged him, he said “Why wouldn’t it? Hey, it’d be all right. God’s got a plan, brother. I’m going to roll with it.”

Looks like the rolling with it part begins right now.

I believe that people deserve a second chance. He is young and he did have an immature attitude but I think the Eagles couldn't afford to lose him. They will need more than just Maclin, Cooper, Avant, and possibly Burress to do alot better than last year. The guy can produce a highlight reel everytime he touches the ball, he just needs to be motivated. Hopefully, a championship and/or a long term contract (with Philly or any other team) will be motivation enough.

They Franchised D Jackson because if they are unable  to  reach a long term deal the eagles will recieve compenstaion from the team that signs him  . Was a smart move cause they dont want  to give him a 5 year deal so why not get something out of it cant just let him walk for nothing.

NYG CICIMAHOY - I am a Birds fan and don't want #10 in Midnight Green anymore.  He is one dimensional, if it isn't a fly pattern or deep post, forget about it.  That is not a Top 5, or 10, WR talent.  Now, that being said, this move makes sense.  If they don't franchise him, he walks for absolutely nothing.  At least by doing this, they might be able to get a 2nd rounder or something.

As for the Eagles Salary cap, they are one of the best teams in the league at managing it.  Last I checked, they are $15 million under with plenty left to go after some help at D-Line and LB.  Google it, they are very good at back-loading contracts and ensuring any guaranteed money happens at signing, in the season of the FA pick-up, so that the player is easy to cut going forward.  That all being said, I don't feel very good about being the annual champion of the Cap Bowl; spend the money and win a Superbowl for once.

Bad, Bad, BAD move by the Eagles. This guy deserves nowhere near franchise money. If the Eagles think they're gonna be able to trade this guy for anything of value they are dreaming. I would love to see a salary breakdown of the eagles roster to see how they are still under the cap with all the big contracts they've given out the past two years.

Terrible move by the Eagles for a couple of reasons.  First of all, this guy was lazy, unmotivated and a bum while he was not making too much money.  Giving him Tag money now... do you really expect him to start working harder  and being a better teammate?  No Shot!  Also, remember... he acted like a tool, under-achieved, was lazy etc... DURING his contract year!  This shows a great deal about this guy- he is too dumb to even fake it for a year when he would hit the payload thereafter.  Knowing this loser, he will be upset about being tagged and go further into seclusion.  Eagles should dump this garbage before it stinks up the house (or lockerroom).

Desuck Jackson and Michael "pitbull" Vick willnever win anything and will be lucky to sniff the playoffs. Mine as well put  Chedder Bob Burress on the team and have all the thugs in one place.

Dream TEam was a Joke as is Mike Vick.  A wanna be Steve Young that can't throw a football and is too injuried to amount to anything.  Nope it isn't going to matter that they have kept Jackson the problem is at QB.  Get someone that is always hurt and smart enough to read defenses and the Eagles will be real dangerous.

Got to admit, this is a very smart move by the Eagles.  He doesn't deserve anymore.  Yes, he will be making a bunch more money, but they avoided going long deal with him because you are never sure what kind of product he is bringing to the field!  This kid has plenty of talent...he plays well when he wants too...but I am certain his attitude and no shows at meetings played a huge role in him not receiving a long term contract.  The kid just needs to all of us what you are really worth!
