Did Gregg Williams compensate players in BUF?

The NFL already has informed its fans that, under Gregg Williams reign as Saints defensive coordinator, he contributed to a bounty pool that helped motivate New Orleans players to try to knock opponents out of games. He’s since apologized and said it was a terrible mistake.

Then, there was a report Saturday that the NFL would investigate the Redskins to determine whether Williams pulled the same shenanigans in Washington when he was the defensive coordinator there under Joe Gibbs from 2004-07 (Gibbs has said he wasn’t aware of a pool, but former player Matt Bowen admitted in a piece for the Chicago Tribune the Redskins had one in place).

Now, the Buffalo News reported Saturday night that, when Williams was the Bills head coach from 2001-03, he rewarded players for injuring opponents and making other important plays.

"There was financial compensation," former safety Coy Wire told the newspaper, along with three other former players who asked not to be named.

And it wasn’t just rewards for knocking out a player to gain a competitive advantage – which obviously is bad enough. No, according to Wire, it was a malicious-type atmosphere.

"There were rewards,” he said. “There never was a point where cash was handed out in front of the team. But surely, you were going to be rewarded. When somebody made a big hit that hurt an opponent, it was commended and encouraged."

And now at this point, Wire can’t believe he ever thought that was the right way to play the game.

"Now, it's unthinkable that was my reality," Wire said. "I shattered (former Lions running back) James Stewart's shoulder, and he never played again. I was showered with praise for that. It's a shame that's how it was. Now I see how wrong that was."

And assuming the NFL investigates these charges and punishes the offenders, Williams also will get the chance to learn just how wrong it was. And at some point maybe we should wonder whether, assuming all of this proves true, whether Williams deserves to continue his coaching career in the NFL.

Did Gregg Williams compensate players in BUF?

This guy should get suspended for a year ! !

James Harrison gets fines and suspensions for stuff that he does in the action of the game without a split second to think about it...   this guy was setting up systems of payment for what level of injury you inflict on certain players.

If Goodell doesn't come strong on this the players might revolt ! ! !

Marcellius Wiley was one of them, he said that he knew of bounties list when he was still playing.  They showed three other twitter accounts of former and current players that said what Gregg Williams did was not a big deal cause most teams have something like this.

The reason why I would say that Dree Brees might want to look out is for opposing teams that look back and remember a hit that took out a key player.  Plus it mentions the Saints players targetted QB's, so why wouldnt a team try to get back at the Saints by taking out Drew Brees.  Sure, Brees might have never been "apart" of the bounty list, but its guilt by association.  Drew Brees is the QB of the Saints, the Saints defense has been trying to take out other teams QB's.  What do you do to get back at the Saints, you go and try to take out Drew Brees.  Sam Bradford might be on the look out cause Williams is his teams new DC, and you never know if he will set up a new "list"

Look back at Peyton Manning, they are looking back and are seeing that his neck problems started with a game against the Redskins 5-6 years ago when Williams was their DC.  Manning had his helmet ripped off by a Redskin player, could Williams had set up a bounty on Manning?  It would be bad if one of the greatest QB's had to end his career early because Williams tried to encourage his players to take Peyton out.

And How many players that played against the Saints defense missed games.Their are dirty players like Harrison and Suh and their fans stick up for them which is ok.But to use an excuse that they were young is really not an excuse. These are NFL players not high school kids.Suh and his teammates were flagged alot for illegal hits and unsportsmanlike conduct. And they got fines and Suh was suspended. So how can people justify what their players are doing. The coach were wrong the players were wrong. And if Suh had a little better aim the OLINE man would for sure have missed some games.

Listen man. Hate the Lions and Suh if you'd like, but you just put a ton of stupid arguments together in one paragraph.

1)  Age IS an excuse IN LIFE !!  Every single person I've ever known or been connected to in my life made many more mistakes in their early 20's then later in life.  That's a FACT, not my opinion.  Just because 99.99999 percent of people aren't football players playing a violent game doesn't mean their mistakes weren't just as big, it just happens they weren't in a violent business like the NFL where stupid mistakes involve violence.  Only a Suh or Lion hater would say age doesn't matter.  Age ALWAYS matters.

2) Watch the Suh stomp again before you talk crap.  Suh stepped on the player, stomped on him. It was bad.  But he stomped in EXACTLY the place he intended to.  He didn't miss....  once again, just a Suh hater talking nonesense.

Which ESPN analysts are saying this is not a big deal and that it happens on every team?

Also, why would Drew Brees and Sam Bradford be targets? They had nothing to do with it.

You're not that bright, asre you?

Regardless of being fined, banned etc... I want to know if Williams is now done in St. Louis?   And what about his time with the Skins?  Is Joe Gibbs untouchable?

He was HC and they finished up the track with him as head coach. If you do not make the playoffs then it does not matter what your defensive or offensive rank is..... the fact is his teams were watching from the sidelines when the real football started. Instead of setting up bounty programs as head coach he should have been more worried about firguring out a way to have a winning record in the AFC East..... just saying.... Sealed

Wire is a dumb@ss.. He made a play & they gave him praise.  The play resulted in a semi-bad running back being fragile gets exposed with his bad shoulder.
i remeber that play stewart was on the ground already and he hit him well he was down, if he hit him while running then there wouldnt be a problem at all because thats what they are suppose to do. but stewart was down already and he got hit late.

Wire is a dumb@ss.. He made a play & they gave him praise.  The play resulted in a semi-bad running back being fragile gets exposed with his bad shoulder.  If Wire wants us to believe that he some how hit the guy harder because he was going to get praised, then why is he even playing?  He's supposed to go 100% whistle to whistle.  You want to put punishment on the other guy.  You want him to get sore so mental mistakes start to happen.  This story is rediculously stupid.  These CBS guys are all trying to stay on Goodell's good side by turning in such stories so that we can have a "safer" NFL... which no one really wants outside Goodell, a few owners of fragile QB's & those same fragile QB's.  The NFL was great whn players weren't trying to make a sole living off playing ball.  Now that these men are graduating college with a degree in football they rely on the paycheck & are scared to be injured.  That's why college is so much better... after 4 years, that player is gone anyway, and every team goes on.  You play all out because if you don't you will be replaced and if you get injured, you're going to be replaced anyway.

C`mon stop with the Gregg Williams witchhunt...not like you can consider the Buffalo Bills an NFL team now or during Williams brief head coaching cameo. Pay for performance isn`t illegal. I bet you could find this on many teams, it`s just not let out to the press until something like this. Coy Wire surely didn`t earn squat unless it was a special teams wedge bust or something.
