Romanowski: Bounty talk blown 'out of proportion'

Bill Romanowski always had a reputation as a pretty intense guy on the football field. If you listen to his appearance on The Jim Rome Show below, you'll see that Romanowski hasn't lost his edge since he retired.

And when he was asked by Rome about the current bounty scandal (I agree with Rome: 'Bountygate' needs to die a quick death) surrounding the Saints, Romanowski blamed the snitches and the press for helping to blow it way out of proportion.

"I think the press has blown it way out of proportion," Romanowski told Rome. "At the end of the day I think this was about bringing a group of guys together -- a defense -- together -- to say, 'We want to be the baddest mother-effers in the league.' OK? This was internal motivation in their defensive room that should've stayed in their defensive room. Nobody should've leaked this.

"And guess what? Gregg Williams just created an incentive program to fire guys up and do what they do and that's try and hit people as hard as humanly possible. And if they got taken out on a stretcher and it was the starting quarterback they probably had a better chance to win. But is the intent to try and hurt someone and put them the hospital? I think no. That was not the intent. This was just an internal motivator for his defense."

I also agree with Rome on the fact that Bill needs to get to an attorney and patent "GUESS WHAT?" Bart Scott-style as fast as possible. But I'm not so sure that the OG Romo really gets that the game has changed.

Sure, he told Rome that his hit on Kerry Collins in 1999 where Collins was bleeding everywhere would net him a $1 million fine today. But he also tried to make a tennis analogy with football and I'm not entirely sure it works.

"We're playing football here, Jimmy. We're not all of a sudden playing tennis and saying, 'Oh jump over the net and take out the other guy if he hits a nice shot," Romanowski said. "You put on shoulder pads and a helmet and you go out there and you try to hit people -- impose your will upon them and try to defeat them and LITERALLY take them out of the game by overpowering them physically."

It's possible to impose your will on someone else without violating clearly-defined NFL rules regarding the illegal nature of utilizing monetary incentives to promote violence on the field.

The media blows everything out of proportion. This is almost like playing skins on the golf course with your friends it creates a little side competetion. It creates competition within the team which is always good. I remember Chuck Bednerik getting $25 and a box of stoggies for laying out Frank Gifford. But then just like when you win the skins match on the golf course with your buddies he had to spend more on drinks for the other players after the game.

Sure, he might have been a "tad" dirty, but he played with heart.
A "tad" dirty?  After retiring, he openly admitted that he deliberately broke fingers and kicked testicles on the bottom of piles when he didn't think the refs could see it.  He also openly admitted to being a steroid user for most of his 16-year career.  That's certainly not the way that football "should be played"... then or now.

Hitting hard and playing to the whistle within the framework of the game is fine.  And injuries happen within that framework... that's just the way it goes.  But Romanowski is one of the all-time kings of dirty play.

Having said that, the media really is going nuts with all of this.  The Saints did cross a line by institutionalizing the bounty thing.  But initially, it looked like Goodell was content to just fine Williams and be done with it.  Only now, with all the uproar and eyes and ears on it, I think he's going to feel compelled to make a huge example out of it in order to appease the fuming masses.  I suppose whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of perspective... but the fact remains that Romanowski was correct about the fact that it *is* a media-driven result.

Romanowski played the game like it should be played? I didn't realize being one of the dirtiest players ever, being one of the biggest roiders ever, and taking great pride in hurting other players with cheap shots, is how the game should be played.

Nobody should've leaked it, you're right. But somebody did. I'm sick of the "sorry we got caught attitude." Similarly, I'm sick of Bill Romanowski's name popping up every couple of years. The guy is a proven meathead moron. I'm not sure why anyone feels compelled to ask him anything other than the fact that, well, meathead morons often say entertaining things.

Clearly one too many blows to the head will cause an Idiot to say stupid things. Clearly we have a winner here. For a man that was a Steroid user and carries around pills in a clear see-through plastic briefcase like they are M&M's should just shut the heck up. This guy reminds me of the Ultimate Warrior. Sure, looks like a bad-ass, babbles on incoherently and the only one it makes any sense to is himself. Puffed up idiots in each their own right, but in this case Romo should keep it shut.
