Report: Broncos to gauge chances with Manning

Tebowmania isn't enough to keep Denver from inquiring about Manning. (Getty Images)

The Cardinals, Dolphins and Redskins are the early favorites for Peyton Manning's services, but there are other teams in the running, too. The Jets and Seahawks have expressed interest, and the Broncos, fresh off a season's worth of Tebowmania, could do so as well.

Manning era ends in Indy
Details via the Denver Post's Mike Klis:

"The Broncos are expected to place a phone call to Manning's agent, Tom Condon, to gauge their chances, according to an NFL source close to the situation. If Manning's contract can be structured so that the team would be protected in case Manning's troublesome neck becomes an issue, the Broncos could well be players."

Put differently: we were right to be skeptical when John Elway and John Fox proclaimed after the 2011 season that Tim Tebow would head into training camp as Denver's starter. That could still hold, of course -- landing Manning is a longshot, particularly given Fox's run-run-run-punt offensive philosophy.

And the other free-agent QB options aren't particularly appealing: names like Matt Flynn, Chad Henne, and Jason Campbell are either unproven or not an upgrade over Tebow. Not only that, what quarterback looking to start would step in front of the buzz saw that is Tebow's rabid fan base? They ran Orton out of the lineup after a 1-4 start, and eventually out of town. Plus, it would mean revamping the offense again, something that would only make sense if the Broncos landed someone like, say, Manning.

Klis points to two other reasons why Manning-to-Mile High doesn't seem likely:
His age, he turns 36 later this month, coupled with the fact he didn't play last year because of multiple neck surgeries makes him an enormous risk.

And the risk will be financially huge by the time Mike Shanahan's Washington Redskins, as well as the Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and possibly the Kansas City Chiefs engage in a bidding war.

Another reason the Broncos might not get in a serious bidding war would be the presence of Tebow. By wobble or by will, Tebow took the worst team in football — and that's exactly what their 7-24 record dating back to Nov. 1, 2009 made the Broncos, the NFL's worst team during that span — and helped lead them to the playoffs and a first-round upset of Pittsburgh this past season.
Whatever your thoughts on Tebow, prototypical NFL quarterback, there's no denying what he helped the Broncos accomplish last season. That, and tepid interest from Manning as other teams clamor for his services, means that Tebow's job is safe … for now.

That's so insulting to Broncos fans in general. It wasn't just Tebow's fans, it was Broncos fans everywhere. Sure it was 1-4 in 2011, but it was also 2-8 to finish 2009 and 3-10 in 2010 under Orton. Tebowmania did not run Orton out of the lineup, Orton ran Orton out of the lineup. It just took the fans screaming at Fox after that 1-4 start to make it happen and it just so happened that Tim Tebow was 2nd in line.

what about 15????? the 15th thing is, Wayne also would like to go there and team up Wayne and Marshall and you got yourself a scary one-two punch at WR.

Report: Broncos to gauge chances with Manning

This is an open and shut case.  Think about it...only the DOLPHINS can add all of these 14 (fourteen!) plusses all together in one place:

1) No real incumbent
2) Very good defense
3) Great offensive line and the best Left Tackle in football
4) Running game
5) Skill players: Reggie Bush (Manning's type of RB) and Marshall.
6) Cap space to bring in Peyton's buddies, like Reggie Wayne, who has already said he would love to follow Peyton wherever he goes.
7) Great weather
8) Not a media crazed city - not as laid back as Indy, but then, very few cities are.
9) He has a condo in Miami, where apparently he stays these days! (and who wouldn't?)
10) Dan Marino is Peyton's 2nd favorite QB of all-time. First, of course, being his Dad. I'm sure there would be a draw to play where Marino played and finish what Marino started. Plus...brothers in aqua blue. Pretty cool.
11)  They would have no issues allowing him to reprise his role as the de-facto Offensive Coordinator.
12)  AFC - No playing his brother in the playoffs unless its the MANNING BOWL!
13)  EAST COAST - Saving his family from lots of East to West and back again travel time during the season.

And, #14, I'd look good in Aqua Blue and Orange.  OK, that's not the real #14 (but it is something no other NFL team offers - orange and aqua blue).

The real #14?  Ross and the Dolphins will pay Peyton just about whatever he wants!

No other team can roll up all of these plusses (14), combined, all in one place.  On paper, it has to be the DOLPHINS.

Report: Broncos to gauge chances with Manning

Arizona or even Dallas seems to be a comfortable choice with Arizona having the cap room to pay Manning what he may be asking. IF I were Arizona, I would offer him $30 Million signing bonus, then structure his contract to pay high for a full season and protection against injuries. The $30 million signing bonus will more than pay itself off through Manning just being there, with sales of jerseys and tickets plus sponsorship and TV time.... Remember the TV schedule hasn't come out yet, and we'll see Thurday Night games regularly on NBC next season...... The added bonus for Manning is that he will play in a conference where 9-7 gets you in the playoffs. Heck even 8-8 or 7-9 is a possibility..... And if Reggie Wayne joined the Cards to help take pressure off Fitz, you'd see there offense probably go through the roof, that being if they get in sync chemistry-wise.....

Report: Broncos to gauge chances with Manning

The Shanahans would be the reason Peyton won't be going to Washington, not Eli.  I think as competitive as Peyton is, he would love to go up against his brother twice a year.
i disagree, the Shanahans arent great for Peyton, true, but i think it's Eli. it's not the competitive deal as much as it's his mom and dad, would Peyton want to put his mom and dad in that drama twice a year for possibly the next 3 years???
I wouldn't be so quick to call the Jets a ground and pound team.   While that may be accurate, there is no getting around the fact that the Jets WANT to be a passing team.
they may want to, but Ryan seems bent on going back to ground n pound, but also remember that was just one reason, i dont see him being a Jet actually due to the locker room style and the ground n pound is just another strike.
Arizona probably makes the most sense, weather wise and they do have one of the best wideouts in the game.
i think Arizona and Miami are the two best fits, BUT the question is with Arizona is more on will Kolb be cut soon, if he's cut, then i see Arizona as the new favorite.
As for Washington, well Eli isn't going to be the reason he doesn't go there.  It will be because the Redskins have such an uphill battle to go anywhere.
i think Eli is the key reason, i think the Shanahan's are a smaller reason, but i think it's not wanting to put his mom and dad through this, i also see him going to a warmer weather or dome team, like Arizona or Miami.
The division will be tough (Philly will rebound this year and Dallas was right in it last year up until the final game of the season).
i dont think he's worried about the division as much, i think it will be more on not wanting family drama, playing in good weather and the coaches, the Shanahan's are best with YOUNG qbs who they can groom, especially QBs in round 1, that's why i think RG3 makes great sense, if he's as good mechanic wise as someone says, then RG3 is a perfect fit. As for Manning, i still say it's Miami or Arizona, Arizona's good, but Miami isnt bad either, they have Marshall, can get Wayne, has Bush who also can catch and a decent TE and a pro bowl left tackle which Arizona doesnt have yet.
If I'm WAS, the smart move is to trade up and see if you can get Robert Griffin III.  He obviously has more long term upside than Manning, would cost less, and he is someone you could build around.
i agree, i think the BEST move would be trade ALOT for RG3, he fits best and while we arent a QB away, a young QB would be a right step. the Redskins never had a QB with potential like RG3 has, people will say Campbell, but i always thought he was a bit of a reach.

The Shanahans would be the reason Peyton won't be going to Washington, not Eli.  I think as competitive as Peyton is, he would love to go up against his brother twice a year.  The Shanahans "my way or the highway" attitude will prevent Peyton from signing in Washington, Peyton is unique, has his own offense, the Shanahans will never be schooled by Peyton.

I wouldn't be so quick to call the Jets a ground and pound team.   While that may be accurate, there is no getting around the fact that the Jets WANT to be a passing team.  The fact that they WANT to be a passing team makes them more apt to go after Manning.  Plus, Jets ownership will do almost anything for media attention.  Especially now that the Giants have won another Super Bowl.

Arizona probably makes the most sense, weather wise and they do have one of the best wideouts in the game.  As for Washington, well Eli isn't going to be the reason he doesn't go there.  It will be because the Redskins have such an uphill battle to go anywhere.  The division will be tough (Philly will rebound this year and Dallas was right in it last year up until the final game of the season).  At least in the West you have Seattle and STL as punching bags.  I could see SF regress this year, especially if Manning is at the helm in AZ.

If I'm WAS, the smart move is to trade up and see if you can get Robert Griffin III.  He obviously has more long term upside than Manning, would cost less, and he is someone you could build around.  Throwing a ton of money at Manning assumes that the Redskins are just one QB away from a championship.  That's just simply not the case.

dont expect that, just like i dont expect him in NY, Ryan and Fox are ground 'n pound coaches, now i know people will say, they can and will change their styles, but i just dont see him choosing them. i still think the favorites are Miami and Arizona (if they cut Kolb) due to the weather and the players in place on top of it. i personally wish he would choose my team, but i think Eli will be the key reason for why he's not here.
