Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert posted a letter to Cavs fans regarding LeBron James on the team's website tonight, and it is truly shocking. In the letter, Gilbert lays into James (passively aggressively, never once using the word "LeBron" and using "James" only once) for what he refers to as a "cowardly betrayal. " He talks about the ridiculous spectacle of James' television special. He tells Cleveland fans they deserve more than the betrayal they received.

And then the kicker.

You see, he wrote in Comic Sans so that you would know he's serious.

Gilbert's letter is clearly an emotional reaction an emotional situation. The franchise, who they had specifically built the entire organization around, has left them. But to paint James' departure as a cowardly betrayal is a bit much. Danny Ferry had years to build a championship organization around the best player in basketball, and instead always opted for the safe way out. The easy route. The compromise value deal. Acquiring players like Wally Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace and even Antawn Jamison were safe moves that involved no real risk and yet never capitalized on the big move. Meanwhile, James saw the Lakers and Celtics win championships with all out moves to surround their best players with top tier talent.

Gilbert has taken control of his own message, and it's clear. LeBron James is dead to the Cavaliers and the city of Cleveland as far as he's concerned. James may not have wanted to burn bridges in his hometown, but tomorrow, he'll wake up and smell the smoke.

That part of his life is over. Forever.

Cavs owner eviscerates James for "betrayal"

Evisceration aside....I can't believe that an owner constructed this poorly written letter. I mean...c'mon...horrible sentence structure, poor grammar, use of double negatives. My 8 year old niece could have done better. How did this Gilbert guy get his money? Inheritance? He seems too dim-witted and out of control to have earned it.

the player they had invested EVERYTHING in  just dumped the team in a public self serving way.  So what you are saying is how dare the owner be publically upset?

Also he is telling the city, we are still here to win and if James is not part of it, we are still going to win.

To support your point and why I do not think there will be three professional teams in Cleveland in 2-4 years.

Aug 5, 2008 ... Forbes Magazine came out with its list of "America's Fastest Dying Cities". Cleveland was no.1...

Cavs owner eviscerates James for "betrayal"

I appreciate all his efforts to try to surround Lebron with stars but the spoiled professional athlete of today does not want to play in a city that lacks the glamour.  How many times did he try to bring in the pieces to get us over the top and they had no desire to play in Cleveland.  I say to Mr. Gilbert:  Save yourself and take this team to a city where the free agents will come.

'He should be apologizing to Cleveland's fans for not being willing to go get the star needed to win with Lebron'.

Your either joking or the biggest idiot whoever walked the face of the earth.  I know you have got to be joking because no person is this stupid.

Gilbert needs to quit crying like a little kid who spilled some cheerios.   Here is a few things he needs to ponder before whining.

1.  Look at the P&L of your organization before and after Lebron.  Lebron added millions to the value of his organization and made the Cavaliers actually relevant

2.  Did you seriously pull the "Loyalty" card on a player??  Puleeaasse.  How many times have you traded a player to another team without revocation for the betterment and financial reasons for your own team.

3.  Lebron is a phuccking FREE AGENT.  Give him his due for making decisions about his future.

4.  If he quit in games 2,4,5,6 against the Celtics as you say, then why are you willing to give him a max contract...think about it

This guy is a joke!

First off I think the ESPN special to announce his decision was a bit much, but I doubt it was all LeBron's idea.  I am not sure LeBron gave himself the title "King" James.  I really doubt he introduces himself as King James.

James is an increbible athlete and basketball player that loves being in the spotlight and the media love to cover his stories.  And for good reason...people for some reason most be interested.

This owner guy is a joke.  He probably wrote this letter as he was crying himself to sleep.  Oh NO, there goes our ticket sells, there goes are tv ratings, there goes our MERCHANDISE sells.  Maybe I should write a letter bashing LeBron to get the last little bit of Lebron media coverage I can get.

He should have been thinking LeBron for his time in Cleveland and wishing him luck.  This is just more fuel for LeBron.

Kudos, nothing. Dan Gilbert is nothing but a jealous scorned lover.  He should have stepped up and provide LeBron with a #2.  Instead, he has surrounded him with a bunch of washed up players like Shaq and Jamison. Who in their right mind will want to go play for an owner that betrays you when you don't make the decision he wants you to make.

Cavs owner eviscerates James for "betrayal"

I love how people are calling out Gilbert for lack of loyalty or not surrounding LeBron with good players, while totally ignoring the point that everything Dan Gilbert has done over the past 5 years was done to try to please LeBron James and getting him to re-sign with the Cavs and this letter is clearly him venting about how doing everything to please LeBron didn't even get recognized by replying to a text message.

LeBron wants Shaq - Cavs get Shaq.  LeBron blames coach - Mike Brown fired.  And on and on and on ...

To leave without so much as replying to a phone call or text message is embarrassing and makes me proud of Dan Gilbert as a Michigan State alum.  I don't blame him for courting Izzo either, he's got to try to hire who he thinks is best for the team.

This letter, to not only LeBron, but to all spoiled athletes in this day and age has definitely made a new Cavs fan out of me and apparently, many others.
