Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert posted a letter to Cavs fans regarding LeBron James on the team's website tonight, and it is truly shocking. In the letter, Gilbert lays into James (passively aggressively, never once using the word "LeBron" and using "James" only once) for what he refers to as a "cowardly betrayal. " He talks about the ridiculous spectacle of James' television special. He tells Cleveland fans they deserve more than the betrayal they received.

And then the kicker.

You see, he wrote in Comic Sans so that you would know he's serious.

Gilbert's letter is clearly an emotional reaction an emotional situation. The franchise, who they had specifically built the entire organization around, has left them. But to paint James' departure as a cowardly betrayal is a bit much. Danny Ferry had years to build a championship organization around the best player in basketball, and instead always opted for the safe way out. The easy route. The compromise value deal. Acquiring players like Wally Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace and even Antawn Jamison were safe moves that involved no real risk and yet never capitalized on the big move. Meanwhile, James saw the Lakers and Celtics win championships with all out moves to surround their best players with top tier talent.

Gilbert has taken control of his own message, and it's clear. LeBron James is dead to the Cavaliers and the city of Cleveland as far as he's concerned. James may not have wanted to burn bridges in his hometown, but tomorrow, he'll wake up and smell the smoke.

That part of his life is over. Forever.

Cavs owner eviscerates James for "betrayal"

Lebron lovers need to give it a rest.  He publicly humiliated the city of Cleveland with that spectacle today on national tv.  This guy is so full of himself.  I'm surprised he didnt go with the mutiple hats on the table like a HS senior selecting a college, then fake reach towards the Cavs hat only to double back and drop the Heat lid on his dome.  That was amateur hour.  Good for Dan Gilbert calling him out.

For those of you who think Lebron gave his all for the Cavs, you need to check yourselves, he quit in the playoffs the last 2 years.  The Cavs won 60 games in the regular season yet flamed in the playoffs both years.  Lebron was at fault, not the roster, not the owner, not the GM.  Dont believe me, watch game 5 vs Boston again.  When they needed him most, he disappeared.

If he had any balls, he would have went to NY.  I could respect that.  If he won a title there, he truly would have been the Global Icon he thinks he should be.  He took the safe play by latching onto D-Wade/Bosh.

And since when is Lebron the best player in basketball?  Did Kobe retire?  Last I checked Kobe is still the man with 5 rings (including the last 2) and is the best player in the game since the guy who wore 45.  Kobe makes the most ridiculous shots from the most ridiculous angles look like easy baseline jumpers.  How is there a debate?

What part of "free agency" does the owner not understand.  30 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists over seven yrs and all you provide is a washed up Shaq (by the way, nobody in Cleveland is crying because he left to free agency), J-J-J-Jaminson, and I won't show up in the play-offs Mo WIlliams.  What dod Altlanta do for Dominique Wilkens when he got old...bye, bye human hi-lite and thanks for the jersey sales.  "The King" is smart to go after it when he has some legs left.  Look a Malone and Barkley, on some very good teams but to old to produce at a Championship level.  What would have been Clevelands next move if he would have stayed?  All the big name free agents were signed.  that is what management is, they could have easily cleared some cap space over the last two years, told "the King" they are build court and went after Wade and Bosh.  Instead they try these experiements with Shaq and Jaminson.  A chess board needs its "king", but it needs pawns, bishops, rooks, etc.  IF you don't have all the pieces..Checkmate in the Eastern conference finals.  Atleast the "king" saw Miami got some of the big pieces Cleveland was sorely missing.  He put your city back on the map and you should appreciate it instead of making him want to drop 84 on you when he comes to town.

Lebron says he plays the game to win a championship. We'll MVP, Kobe and Michael didn't have to join an all star team to get theirs.  They showed patience and guts and won them leading their team.  Now Lebron's on a team where he can quit, like he did against Boston, to let DWade carry his EGO.

Gilbert is the disloyal one in this occasion. After seven years, the best the Cavs could do was Williams and Jamison. Seriously. That is the very definition of disloyalty. As for your guarantee, Gilbert you are either an absolute moron or just speaking out anger.I wish better for the Cleveland fans but with management like this there is no new or brighter tomorrow.

Cavs owner eviscerates James for "betrayal"

I have already owned everyone on here. I have yet to hear anyone make a real argument to my original post.

You can see the writers sarcasm in "acquired the likes of Wally Szerbiak, Ben Wallace, Antawn Jamison."

First, did any of these a-hole, no talent writers ever think that just maybe the Cavs could have gotten a "big name" if Lebron would have just commited a long time ago with a five year contract instead of a three? What if Lebron would have flat out said "Cleveland is my home, I love it here,  I am going to be here most if not all of my career, the big stars are going to have to come to me." No, he would go to New York two years prior to even becoming a free agent and say trash like "July 1st is going to be a very big day for Knick fans. If you want to just fall asleep and wake up on that day it's going to be a very big day."

Secondly, You have to realize the Cavs current ownership were behind the eight-ball from the previous ownership/management that let Boozer walk and opted to sign Larry Hughes the following summer instead along with horrible contracts handed out to Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones. When you take into account that Hughes/Marshall/etc. were traded for Szerbiak/West/Wallace/Joe Smith that was a good deal. Then Damon Jones/Joe Smith for Mo Williams was a steal. Z and a pick for Antawn Jamison, who got the better out of that deal? Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic for Shaq? Still, no question of who got the better deal there.

Thirdly, Dan Gilbert has done everything in his power to make this organization first class from the extrovagant meals provided pre and post gametime, the total rennovation of The Q, or the multi-million dollar, state of the art practice facility built in Independence. This was in no doubt done to wine and dine and keep James and his family happy.

Lastly, crippled with no cap room  and pressured to keep Lebron happy as possible by winning now, what else were they supposed to do? I would love to know. You can make fun of Dan all you want but the fact is he did everything he was supposed to do and he couldn't even get the courtesy of a phone call from "King James" as to what his decision was. Anyone in this situation would be ticked to say the least

the  cavs owner was letting his emotions get to him, that was classless what he did, he shouldnt of wrote that type of letter, lebron did what was good for him and left, if cleveland wanted to keep lebron they would of gotten better players then washed up stars.

How did Gilbert betray us? he went and got every guy Lebron wanted, how can you blame Gilbert for that? how can you blame fans for being mad at this cop out of a show that Lebron put on tonight? here's a question, if Duncan left the spurs this way would you be mad, YES OR NO? Yes you would be mad! so shut your trap!

I don't agree with how Lebron did it, but it's not just him acting he's walking corporation just Tiger Woods, Beyonce etc.
No one is blaming Espn or the media for help making this happen.

Secondly, the owner is a hypocrite because if Lebron decides to stay at Cleveland he wouldn't be criticizing how he did it. If I'm Lebron and I see that letter it confirms that I made the right decision by leaving. Cleveland paid him millions, but how much money did he make them.
