Magic match Bulls to retain Redick

True to their word, the Magic won't be letting J.J. Redick head to greener pastures (and a starting gig). NBA FanHouse's Tim Povtak reports that the Orlando Magic will match the 3-year, $19 million offer from the Chicago Bulls for Redick to retain his services.

The move is likely not the best news for Redick, who likely would have been in a position to compete for the starting shooting guard spot with the Bulls, and instead will continue to come off whenever Stan Van Gundy realizes Vince Carter has reached his nightly point-of-no-return. Redick has proven he can play back-up point or drain from the outside, and his defense, particularly on Ray Allen in the playoffs, has been exemplary.

But the Magic have committed to winning a championship, and that means spending. Van Gundy squashed Redick at the beginning of his career on his bench, but instead of bristling, complaining, and demanding a trade, Redick kept working, and became a defense-oriented player, while keeping the shooting stroke he made famous in college.

With the move, the Magic will be even further in the luxury tax, and you have to wonder if Marcin Gortat, or another frontcourt player is on the move for the Magic to take the sting off retaining Redick.

I have no idea what the Magic are doing.  I can understand signing Duhon because they needed a backup at point guard but after they signed Q I assumed they were going to let Redick go.  I guess Matt Barnes is the one that is out of the picture, may see Vince Carter and Redick in the starting line up.

The Magic are essentially paying $14 million for Reddick this year.  Are they nuts???  I like Reddick, and think that the 3 year, $19 million, but he ain't a $14 million player.

It would have been better for Redick's career had Orlando not matched it.  Now he's stuck on a team with nothing but guys who can't hit a 3 but won't leave the 3 pt line (Pee-tree-us, Lewis, now Q Rich lol)

What is Orlando's GM th inking this offseason?  Richardson?  Duhon??

Dude, dumb VC.  He's overpaid and looks like he has a terminal illness.

Oy.  JJ Redick has become a very pesky defender and his shooting is unquestioned.  He is a key piece of the Orlando Magic and they were smart to retain him.  I fully expect him to replace Vince Carter in he starting line-up or at least equal VC's minutes.  He is also way more likely to be in at the end of games than Carter.

I agree with Berger that Marcin Gortat may need to go for financial reasons, and there will be no lack of takers for him.

Oh, by the way, I have a degree from UNC and am not particularly partial to Dookies.  But I am even less fond of reverse racism.
