Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

  • Jeff Van Gundy says the Heat will be historically great : "They will break the single-season win record [of 72],'' Van Gundy told the Miami Herald. "And I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers' 33-game [winning] streak [in 1971-72], as well. And only the Lakers have even a remote shot at beating them in a playoff series ... They will never lose two games in a row this year. They have put together a much better roster than anybody could ever have expected. There is now no good way to defend them. They are unguardable. They are indefensible. They are just too good and have added so much shooting and are so versatile that they will score at will. And with  Erik Spoelstra coaching, they will be in the top three defensive teams in the league, as well. The other 29 teams better hope the lockout gets moved up a year.''
  • Where do the two O'Neal's fit together in Boston? Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston weighs in: "However, I actually see potential in an O'Neal-O'Neal frontcourt. Celtics GM Danny Ainge noted that he was eager to utilize Jermaine O'Neal at the 4 this season, and high-mileage legs aside, I don't see why it can't work against another team's second unit. It's not like they're going to spend 20 minutes together on the court per game, so if you need to lean on that pairing for a sequence or two each game, I don't see a problem."
  • David Aldridge of NBA.com also reports the Pistons are actively discussing McGrady but aren't close to a decision either way. Aldridge also says the Pistons are expected to try and move Prince before the start of the season, thus making room for McGrady.
  • Multiple people have mentioned this, but it's a good question: How does the Knicks consulting job work for Isiah Thomas? With his relationship to the Knicks, wouldn't him coaching at Florida International mean he's having improper contact with underclassmen?
  • Frank Isola of the NY Daily News says Donnie Walsh should walk away : "Walsh is too respected by his peers to take orders from Dolan via Thomas. We know Walsh has no use for Thomas and therefore can't work with him or more precisely work for him. Full autonomy? Please. Thomas is calling the shots now. There is too much distrust and bad blood already for this to be anything less than a terrible marriage. The fact that Dolan can't see that Walsh has done a solid job tells you all you need to know. This is the same guy who blames the media coverage for nine straight losing seasons. So quit, Donnie. Resign. Walk away. You've already said you'll stick it out because you're a class act. But you deserve better."
  • Joakim Noah and the Bulls are talking extension : "Of course that's the goal," he told ESPNChicago.com after a charity event for his Noah's Arc Foundation in Queens on Friday night. "I'm not really worried about it. I think everything's going to happen with time and at the end of the day, I'm really excited about the upcoming season."
  • Robert Parish loves Boston's move for Shaq: “Shaq can still start for at least 15 teams, maybe 20 teams,’’ Parish told the Boston Globe. “I would say that time has caught up with him but he can still be a factor and not to mention defensively. He’s long and has a lot of mass and is going to take up a lot of room and that definitely is where the Celtics’ strong suit is, defensively. I think that’s where he gets it done. I think Shaq will definitely bring a defensive presence along with Garnett. He’s going to cause a lot of havoc defensively and he still can get it done offensively.’’

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

The Heat won't win 72 games, but the Cavs may lose 72!

This is why they play the game.  It's easy to get caught up in the Hoopla, but a good defensive team like the Celts can beat anybody. It's hard to win 72 games which is why the Bulls are the only team to do it. When you consider staying healthy which neither Wade or Bosh was able to last season, and then you factor in the back to backs it can be very difficult.

One reason why it is possible? In 2008 Lebron's Cavs won 66 games if he can lead the Cavs to 66 wins then he can lead the Heat to 70, however that does not guarantee Championship.

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

The LeBron led cavs on a team not as good as this Heat team won 66 and 61 the past two years, so it's reasonable to think that Vegas has it close to the mark.
No, the Cavs weren't as talented as this Heat team, we have no idea of knowing if they're as good a team. This is what too many video games does to the brain-it distorts reality.

Van Gundy is just stirring the pot.  What's he got to lose?
You're right rox, he has nothing to lose. His self-respect and ablility to coach went out the window a long time ago. Now if he'd just lose his voice we'd really have something.

The Vegas over/under on Miami Heat wins this year is 66.  So he only added 6 victories, and that's if they are playing amazing ball.

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

Jeff Van Gundy must be sharing a crystal meth pipe with James Dolan.  Next thing you know Dolan will be found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles wandering buck naked with a trashcan lid in his hand... oh wait he's not a former USC tailback.

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

As much as i hate to say it the Celtics are even a deeper and better team plus there will be no defense lost there either the the Heat.

Crusty old vets O'Neal and O'Neal now count as "a dep bench"? And didn't Boston's defensive guru take the head coaching job at Chicago? Boston will not be as good on defense without him.

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

Prediction:

LeBron James injures knee in pre-season and will need micro-fracture knee surgery and will miss the rest of the season, while re-habbing his knee he gets fat from partying at the Miami scene, will be out of shape and balloons up to 295 lbs and will have to play power forward.  Due to the knee injury he loses his speed and athleticism and will have to rely on his bulk and jumper to play an undersixed power forward for the rest of his career.  Lebron james will remain in mediocrity and will be forever remembered along the lines of a glorified Shawn Kemp, Tractor Traylor, Anthony "Pig" Miller who could've...should've...kept the weight down to play in the NBA.

Dwayne Wade carries team without LeBron, who suffers from injury and wills his way for the Miami Heat to the #8 spot in the playoffs to be sweeped by the Boston Celtics

Whereas management, players, and fans realize Chris Bosh is overrated, overpaid, and is suited for a bench role in the Miami Heat rotation as his game diminishes and will play behind Udonis Haslem and Zydrunus Ilgauskas.

Mike Miller becomes #2 scoring option 12 ppg for the Heat and will forever be known as the NBA player that wears to girliest headband.

Shootaround 8.9.10: Heat to pass 72?

Get real there is no team deeper than the Lakers in this league with the additions they have made they themselves will be pushing that 72 game win mark and their own streak of 33 straight games plus they will probably b that 1 team that is better then the Heat at defense. Wade and James are great players and being seperate did make them superstars putting them together isnt going to make the 2 of them better cause they are already at the top of their games and they will have to share that ball and once you get past the big 3 this team takes a serious dive. As much as i hate to say it the Celtics are even a deeper and better team plus there will be no defense lost there either the the Heat. As much as everyone wants to jump on that bandwagon fact is that the finals will be a rematch again.
