LeBron says race played a part in backlash

In an appearance on Wednesday night's edition of "Primetime" on CNN , LeBron James replied that he thought race was a factor in the negative response to his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat .

"I think so, at times," he told CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien. "It's always, you know, a race factor."

Some are likely rolling their eyes, but in a way, the statistics back it up.

Q Score is a poll that measures popularity and LeBron dropped (or jumped, depending on how you look at it) to No. 6 on the list. But among non-blacks, James' negative Q rating went from 24 percent to 44 after his free-agency announcement. However, among blacks, his negative Q Score slipped just from 14 percent to 15 percent.

That seems like something.

LeBron's adviser and marketing guru Maverick Carter was also part of the interview and he agreed about the role of race in the media backlash. "It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written for sure," Carter said.

I don't really know how to touch this topic so I'll kind of stay away and let you decide yourself on it. But as to why one color of people reacted differently to LeBron's decision than the other, I don't know. I don't even want to really take a guess as to why.

One thing that does stick out is that James just said race played a factor and then left it at that. He didn't elaborate. He didn't fill us in. He just whipped out that big shiny race card, dropped it on the table and walked away. And as a result, the door was left wide open for people to criticize, speculate and question his use of it.

As for "The Decision" itself, James said that was his and the people around him's idea. But Carter admitted it wasn't perfect.

"The execution could have been a little better and I take some of the blame for that."

He also said something else I found interesting about LeBron's marketing approach: "It's just about control and not doing it the way it's always been done or not looking the way that it always looks."

Well evidently it's about control. A one-hour special where you control your own message and deliver it exactly how you want? Yep, that's pretty controlling. And that was a big part of the backlash over it.

But it was noted in the report that over $3 million was raised for the Boys and Girls Club of America from "The Decision." That's a good thing that's been largely ignored from that night. That's not going to save LeBron's popularity score, but still, a good thing.

I don't think people care that Lebron left Cleveland. Except Cavs fans. He has every right to go where he wants. The problem was the COMPLETE lack of class in how he did it. There was no reason fo an ESPN 1 hour special. That was the reason for the blacklash

Thats why the American (mostly white) people elected a BLACK MAN. Yes sir... white people hate blacks. No Lebron, it doesnt have ANYTHING to do with Y-O-U. "Never trust whitey", right lebron? Miami Heat fans cry grow up... Hey lebron.... GROW UP... not all WHITEY'S are racist. I'm guessing that why WHITE America dislikes Tiger Woods too???? Its because he is black?

Congrats LeBron, you just cemented for me why I dont and never will watch teh NBA!  If the so-called superstars in that league are as stupid as you and these are the people that the league is pumping up as its poster children, then I will have no association in any way with even viewing an NBA game.   Yeah LeBron all those millions of people of ALL colors that cheered for you during your time in Cleveland are now all racists and maybe even Klan members!!  LeBron I am going to go out on a limb and say that due to your skill as a basketball player, there has never been a day in your life that you have been a victim of anything close to racism.  Quite the opposite, you have always been paraded around like the King that you call yourself.  You do not even know what racism is.  For Jackie Robinson to have endured what he did and for you to come out now and even mention racism, you should be embarassed and you should have to donate half your salary every year to some charitable organization like the united white college fund or some other white cause just to prove you are not racist.  There is a united negro college fund right?? But if there was a united white college fund that would be perceived as racist!  Wake up LeBron, just because there were slaves YEARS before you were born, doesnt mean you know what racism is or that you or any other black man in his twenties alive today is owed anything by anyone regardless of color!!!  Maybe you should have gone to college instead of going right to the NBA, seems like a little education would be a good thing right now.  Ignorant ass!

Yes, because Cleveland has no history of being ridiclous sports fans when things go sour. Black, white, or any flippin color, you act like a douche and your going to be treated like one. I don't have a problem with James going to The Heat, I have a problem with it being like an NBA halftime show in going there. Don't worry LeBron, you already have Sharpton on your side (or did he just say to do it?).

Race is a factor in almost everything. BUT Lebron just doesn't get it. If he had just said I am going to play for the Heat the only people that woud care would be Cavs fans. But this MORON (oops is that racist?) let his ego run wild. There was no reason for a one hour ESPN special. That was the factor. Some white trash rednecks would have come down on him no matter what..........but I hope that is only a small percentage.

Does anybody living in the real world, dealing with real issues, really give a rats azz where Labron plays. He is eat up with Labron. Race is a card that is wearing thin with almost everyone.

Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas all also didn't like how and what he did. Just so happens they'll all black too!! Lebron is a baby. He is showing that. He's not used to people not liking him. How he cries night in and night out is gross also.
