LeBron says race played a part in backlash

In an appearance on Wednesday night's edition of "Primetime" on CNN , LeBron James replied that he thought race was a factor in the negative response to his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat .

"I think so, at times," he told CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien. "It's always, you know, a race factor."

Some are likely rolling their eyes, but in a way, the statistics back it up.

Q Score is a poll that measures popularity and LeBron dropped (or jumped, depending on how you look at it) to No. 6 on the list. But among non-blacks, James' negative Q rating went from 24 percent to 44 after his free-agency announcement. However, among blacks, his negative Q Score slipped just from 14 percent to 15 percent.

That seems like something.

LeBron's adviser and marketing guru Maverick Carter was also part of the interview and he agreed about the role of race in the media backlash. "It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written for sure," Carter said.

I don't really know how to touch this topic so I'll kind of stay away and let you decide yourself on it. But as to why one color of people reacted differently to LeBron's decision than the other, I don't know. I don't even want to really take a guess as to why.

One thing that does stick out is that James just said race played a factor and then left it at that. He didn't elaborate. He didn't fill us in. He just whipped out that big shiny race card, dropped it on the table and walked away. And as a result, the door was left wide open for people to criticize, speculate and question his use of it.

As for "The Decision" itself, James said that was his and the people around him's idea. But Carter admitted it wasn't perfect.

"The execution could have been a little better and I take some of the blame for that."

He also said something else I found interesting about LeBron's marketing approach: "It's just about control and not doing it the way it's always been done or not looking the way that it always looks."

Well evidently it's about control. A one-hour special where you control your own message and deliver it exactly how you want? Yep, that's pretty controlling. And that was a big part of the backlash over it.

But it was noted in the report that over $3 million was raised for the Boys and Girls Club of America from "The Decision." That's a good thing that's been largely ignored from that night. That's not going to save LeBron's popularity score, but still, a good thing.

LeBron says race played a part in backlash

bitterbullsfan makes some good points. the whole circus show with LeBoobs announcement made for a bigger backlash than anything else. his seemingly appearing to give up against the Celts in the playoffs didn't help his case either. if anything, LeBoob is more racist toward white people than they are against him. i hope he never wins a championship.

I wonder how much OJ Simpson's Q Score dropped by demographic after he was found not guilty of murdering two people?

LeBron says race played a part in backlash

I have to say that this is the most disgusted i've ever been of Lebron James.. Leaving your team is a business decision, stupid but whatever. To say this has anything to do with Race is just a scape goat for him.

It allows him to play the feel sorry for me card. It's disgusting and pathetic. If ANYONE thinks this is about Race, then please tell me why half the country hates him (White, Black, Asian, Hispanics all included)... What a disgrace of talent. It's a shame he's fallen this far.

Lebron needs to get on the court because at least he can play basketball because again everytime he speaks stupidity emits from his pie hole.  His amateur PR and Marketing team need to realize high school education needs to shut up.  But than again Lebron hired the high school boys to run his life.

I had nothing but the highest regard for Lebron before he showed no respect for a lot of  people along with his teammates with his ridiculously publicized free agency.  Lebron is a bufoon.  Oh I am white also I guess I don't like Lebron because the color of my skin.

I actually liked Lebron's decision to go to the Miami Heat.

I'm a Bosh fan from Toronto and I understand his ditching the Raptors.

I really looked forward to seeing what the Heat would accomplish this season and maybe give the Lakers a beat down in the finals.

But after reading Lebron's absolutely ignorant comments I feel total distain for him.

I am white, I am 100% not racist in any way and I have many black friends.

When any person uses the race card in the way Lebron has it is racist and disgraceful.

Shame on you Lebron.

Thanks for making me an anti-heat fan.

I will still cheer for Bosh.

African American will cry racist about everything when they really should look in the mirror. How many white only clubs, groups, or how many of these posse's will allow white people in?

He's digging deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and ESPN is with him the whole way down. He's so far the Devil needs to look down a hole to see him.

Lebron is such a fool ... Tiger Woods' rating dropped also.... so i guess that's racism too. I am a black man and I think that people don't like Lebron because he is an arrogant person. This is one case where color doesn't matter ...

WOW a new low for LeBum, I know white AND black people that despise Lebron.  He's just pure trash, always taking the easy way out. I just don't understand how some of these athletes can possibly think this way.  Just sad to see how much we put in professional athletes, we're to be blamed there immature and don't know how to handle all of the attention we give them.  But like i said before, Lebron knows how to take it to a whole different level.
