Heat Stroke:LeBron empathizes with fans, kind of

LeBron James empathizes with fans' anger, then wipes out any good will acquired by insinuating they should "get over it," then denies on Twitter. Good times.

It had to happen sometime. Eventually, LeBron James was going to have to address Cleveland's fans and their visceral reaction to his departure for Southern skies. He was going to have to comment on them and how they feel about him now. Which is to say, he was going to have to comment on the fact that they hate his guts beyond belief. So he did. It did not go well. Here's what James told the ESPN Heat Index's Brian Windhorst about the fans in Cleveland:

"If I was a fan and I was on the outside looking in, I could be upset a little bit if one of my favorite players left," James said. "Or if I felt like he betrayed us or whatever the case may be. But you have to get over it . (Note: Emphasis ours. -Ed.) "
So that definitely comes across as telling Cleveland fans to get over him abandoning them for another team on national television, adding insult to injury, and crushing both their best-contending team and a significant portion of their economy (estimates of up to $250 million per year). Which, you know, probably won't go over well. James, though, was quick to jump on Twitter and backtrack from that sentiment immediately.

So he was just talking about what he would do? I'm confused. Because that quote looks really hard to get around the fact that it sounds like he's talking about Cleveland fans. James went on to explain the gap between the people rooting for laundry, and those that have to wear it.
"Sports are very emotional and fans are very emotional," James said. "At times they really believe you may be related to them you and you sleep in their house. When you do something wrong and you leave their house they can become very emotional. I've understood that over the years. But at the same time, you have to understand you have to do what is best yourself."
James is sounding pretty hurt by all this hatred lately. As I've said before, anger is not really his bag . But for all those that think he didn't care about Cleveland or its fans at all, they should rethink that sentiment. He did make connections there. It was hard for him to leave. He saw an opportunity, and he took it. Maybe it wasn't the "right" thing to do but it was what he felt was right for him, and it's his job, his career, his life. Those of us who are only criticizing him out of our own misguided sense of morality probably should "get over it."

But Cleveland? Nah. They have earned the right to stay mad for as long as they want. That's their right as fans.

Did it ever dawn on you that he'll never be welcomed back?   The cavs were better in the early 90's than they ever were with lebron.

Tuesday night the Heat Big 3 era begins.
Wade/James should be the most exciting duo to watch play together that I can ever remember.
We, as Heat fans accept the role of being the hated team. We earned it.
I know last night I sat and rooted for the Rangers and I could care less about the Rangers. I just wanted the Yankees to lose.
The difference is though, that I certainly never wanted any Yankee to get inujured and any player ever. They are entertainers.
The ignorance is what people need to get over. Root for or against  whoever you choose.

You guys are crazy.  Trashing Lebron is such a way that he never did anything for Cleveland.  You can't win them all,  no matter what.  Look at the freaking Yankee's.  They pay for whoever they want and they still can't win.  Lebron was just trying to better himself and win a championship.  All of you talk about how he is so stuipid for changing teams and losing all this money and what not...   Do you think he cares about money right now?  in 7 years he has made enough for anyone to be satisfied with.  Look what he did for Cleveland.  He brought them an actual team that you could root for and he brought them a chance.  Stop you crying and moaning about him leaving,  if you wanted him to stay so badly then why didn't they free up enough cap room to get dwade, bosh, and keep lebron.  They knew it was coming,  they should have done something about it.  I will agree that him putting on a big show on tv to announce him going to miama was a little retarded but still,  get over it cleveland.  He's gone and he aint coming back.

Can the media please stop talking about this egotistical a hole. Most of the country hates this self absorbed moron. He is a loser who has never won anything and a spoiled little brat. The fact that you, the media, keeps writing these pointless crap about him just feeds into his ego. They still did not win a thing and he is an a hole. He will never be the best.

Really... Lebron you had the world by the balls in cleveland, champioship or not, now all the bad advice you've received is going to cost you millions just like the owners of all the businesses downtown that accually put stock in you doing the right thing!  Granted the weather sucks in cleveland in the winter time and were just a blue collar city trying to keep what we have, but you crushed the hopes of ever getting anything close to what you had by the moronic way you acted.  You name will now live here forever with the likes of Art Model, albert belle and all the other that thought life was greener on the otherside.

I watched you play once in high school and once in the pros (free tickets) but I will go out of my way to pay to see the cavs,  win or lose, because they have one of the best owners in sports.

You can't lie you way out of this one and expect people to forget just because the season is ready to start

Never comes out and says anything to Cleveland fans until now.  I wonder if it has anything to do with his ranking of sports figures in the world.  He went from top 5 to 70-something.  You dropped us on national tv.  Quit in the playoffs, and have been planing to leave for a couple years since the olympics.  The biggest thing that makes me upset, is all the while you were planning to leave, you were killing the Cavs salary cap.  Take off the salaries of the players the Cavs signed (that you yourself signed off on) Mo, Jamison, and the Cavs could of signed a big time free agent and retained you.  Could of signed Rupp Paul err Bosh kept Z to go with a good young supporting cast(Andy, JJ, Gibson).  You will never be king, just the joker that performs for him.  Miami could go on and win the next 6 championships, but just remember, Wade will always have one more than you.  You would have to stab your buddy in the back and have Miami get rid of him.  You would never do that though, would you.  By the actions of this past year, I bet you would.  Jealousy will get the best of you.  Good ridance to you, and please don't call Cleveland/Akron your  home.

Remember Magoo, Lebron couldn't say he was leaving Cleveland so he can get a ring, if he actually helped the Cavs win a ring this past season.  That is something alot of people have forgotten.  He had a triple double in Game 6, but he came close to having a Quadruple Double with 9 Turnovers.  Including 6 in the 4th quarter.  Some of those passes were outrageous, and he suddenly can't dribble the ball without it hitting his foot?  Come on now.
