Report: Magic interested in Gilbert Arenas

At some point, Gilbert Arenas has to move on from Washington. There's just no way the Wizards are willing to jeopardize John Wall's development by stunting his growth with Arenas playing alongside him.

But with Arenas' massive contract and the baggage that comes with him, he's going to be tough to move. Doesn't mean the Wizards aren't probably trying though. And despite the problems with him, Gilbert Arenas is still a really, really talented basketball player. So there's absolutely a market for him.

One team that's reportedly interested is the Orlando Magic, a club that's desperately in search of a reliable scoring option to play with Dwight Howard. The Magic have already apparently made everyone available on the team sans Howard and now, they could be getting proactive.

The Orlando Pinstriped Post, a very reliable blog, reports that the Wizards and Magic have discussed a deal that would send Arenas to Orlando. Also involved could potentially be Andray Blatche, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis and rookie Daniel Orton. From the report:
Both teams have a mutual understanding of what the trade might include, the source says, and it's unclear what factors are holding up the trade. What is clear around the league, however, is that Magic President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith has his eye on Arenas. If Orlando is to make a major trade this season, Arenas will likely be the target.
As noted in the report, CBS Sports' Ken Berger reported the Magic listened to offers for Arenas this summer, but said no to the Wizards due to concern over the salary remaining on his contract, which runs for three seasons after this one, at a total cost of $62.4 million. In early November, reported "the Magic have cooled on the notion of a Vince Carter-for-Arenas exchange," citing "NBA front-office sources." However, the source who spoke to Orlando Pinstriped Post contradicts Stein's report, saying Orlando has indeed initiated the discussions with Washington of late. So who knows.

An interesting deal, especially if Blatche were involved, considering the Wizards just locked him up to be part of their future. But swapping Carter for Arenas makes sense because it gives the Magic the scorer they want and with Carter's deal being up soon, the Wizards have a nice contract to come off the books in the near future, plus can hand the reins of the team completely over to Wall.

With the Magic playing so well early on, they might hesitate. But they had an identical record at this point last season and were missing a scorer that they had in Hedo Turkoglu when they made their Finals run. So Otis Smith might be encouraged to get something done this time around. And by the sounds of it, it could involve Arenas.

If Magic have to get of of Vince Carter than I wouldn't do the trade.  Carter is healthier than Arenas and has over 20,000 career points and has averaged 22.7 for his career.   Arenas, Carter, Howard, and Lewis might be a very high octane offense.  Maybe they can get rid of reddick and pietrus and someone else to get Arenas.

Are you nuts?  Anyway we can get Gils deal off the books.......DO IT.  The Wiz cant move foward until they do.  Blatche has no heart and will never be a star.  Doesnt matter who they get in return as long as the contract is expiring.

Get rid of him asap....he never has been a winner nor will he. If you can get rid of blatche so be it.. he's a selfish basketball player. It doesn't matter who you get in return. Why because the Wizards are poorly run. It won't matter who you get there is little talent on this team(outside Wall--and that's debatable)cuz he can't shoot.. there is no talent on the wizards... but arenas is a clown...

Wouldn't mind having Gilbert on Magic. Don't like the idea of keeping Nelson o. Got 3 point guards at least on the team. J-Will, Nelson, and Duhon. Gonna have to trade one of them. Don't want egos to get in the way. Trade Lewis and Nelson in a package maybe.

Please do it

If there's a way to move Arenas at all, that would be amazing.  If you could also dump Blatche in the process (proclaimed by a few ex-Wizards as the 'laziest professional athlete they'd ever seen'), that would be a miracle.  In Rashard Lewis and/or Vince Carter, you're getting bad contracts, but at least you're getting good guys who don't play point.

I would be stunned if Orlando is able to move Lewis and his loony contract. Granted, Arenas' deal actually has more money remaining on it. Fine. But Arenas can still hoop. Lewis is very close to being washed up, which is a problem when you're midstream on a six-year deal for $110,000,000.

At no time in his career has Hedo been a better, or more reliable, scorer than Vince Carter. I'm so tired of people saying how much the Magic "miss" Hedo when they were CLEARLY (to anyone who actually watches them on a regular basis) better without him last season. Hedo needed the Magic a lot more than they needed him. Boston takes Orlando out in last year's playoffs, with or without Hedo.

I am leery of Arenas because of his recent injury problems and because he is a guy who HAS to have the ball a lot. Right now, the Magic are very much a night Jameer might the hot hand, the next night it could be Vince or Rashard or even Pietrus or Redick off the bench. Bringing in Gilbert has the potential to really mess with chemistry. Even if they bring him in and it works, can Orlando count on Arenas to stay healthy for the rest of the season and the playoffs?

I don't have a problem with trying to shop Carter, but I would rather see Orlando go after a younger and/or less injury prone player who doesn't have a rediculous contract to deal with over the next few seasons. We don't want to relive the Grant Hill situation all over again.
