J.R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets dunked on Gary Neal of the San Antonio Spurs. Posted by Ben Golliver

Despite being a huge pain in the neck for Denver coach George Karl, Nuggets guard J.R. Smith has always been able to get up, but it's difficult to remember a time he dunked as viciously on someone as he did on Gary Neal of the San Antonio Spurs. With the first quarter drawing to a close, Smith dribbles the ball up court, shadowed by Spurs wing Ime Udoka. Using a lightning quick but simple right-to-left crossover, Smith penetrates the heart of San Antonio's defense, meeting no resistance. He takes off from outside the protective circle, powering to the rim with both hands. Neal leaves the weakside corner to slide over under Smith, but he rotates late, and Smith propels himself up and over Neal to finish powerfully with both hands. Smith then did a chin-up on the rim for good measure, as the Pepsi Center crowd in Denver went absolutely ballistic. Smith completed the play with just .6 of a second left on the clock and was awarded a free throw for his efforts.  Here's the video. Perhaps the funniest moment of the sequence occurs when the camera cuts to Smith's teammate, Carmelo Anthony, who is watching from Denver's bench. Anthony barely seems fazed, and nods almost as if he is bored.    With this effort, Smith likely put down the best non-Blake Griffin dunk of the year. I'd say this dunk belongs in the same discussion as Griffin's best. Here's a timelapse photo look at the dunk. jr-smith-dunk-gary-neal

Hey dip stick.  You know that little circle below the hoop.  If any part of your foot is touching it you are considered to be in the restricted area.  On top of that he slid under him as he was jumping.  Look at the photo sequence and you can see it with your own blind Yankee lovin eyes.  Even though JR Smith is an idiot punk dont let that cloud your judgement.

dunk of the year?  uh, pretty much every kobe dunk is better than this.  its not exactly like he took off from the free throw line or anything.

Not a travel.  When players are on the move, they are not going to consider the step of the gather as a planted step.  He was gathering on one step, plants a foot, launches of the next plant.  Gather, 2 feet.
Players at ever level do this on layups.
It really gets tricky when they add the hesitation euro-step, but on this straight line drive there is no travel.
Hell of a dunk.

He jumped over another guy that was standing still - it's not like my man was trying to block it.  I wasn't that impressed - let's see him do that with someone actually jumping with him.  In the end, Melo's attempt to duplicate it cost them the game - Spurs win!

He did travel. And that is why basketball is such a lame sport. They throw out the rules if it looks good. I'm not saying I could have done what he did....but the refs should have called the travel. Happens way too often in that sport.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed he traveled his a$$ off in order to get that dunk.  It was nice but, no where near the caliber of Blake Griffin's one man fast break spin dunk on Danilo Ganillari
