The Charlotte Bobcats have added owner Michael Jordan's long-time friend, Charles Oakley, as an assistant coach. Posted by Ben Golliver jordan-oakley

Michael Jordan and Charles Oakley go back a long time. Before getting traded to the New York Knicks, Oakley was famously Young Jordan's basketball bodyguard, an enforcer tasked with protecting the high-flying star from nightly drubbings. The pair teamed up briefly again during Jordan's comeback with the Washington Wizards, and they've long been known for their hard-partying off-court exploits.  On Thursday, Yahoo! Sports reports that Jordan has tabbed Oakley as one of the assistants to join interim head coach Paul Silas, on a staff which will reportedly also include Stephen Silas and Ralph Lewis.

At first glance, this looks like an uber-rich friend doing a favor for his rich friend, but this might not be the worst idea in the world. With former head coach Larry Brown departing so quickly after making comments about problems in the locker room, it's difficult to think of a better head-cracking enforcer than Oakley. If getting young players to behave and play harder is what's needed, nobody can scare some sense into them quite like Oakley, who made his reputation as a physical rebounder on the tough-as-nails Knicks teams of the 1990s.  I always thought Oakley could wind up as the single best high school security officer of all time, and that's pretty much what he'll be asked to do with the Bobcats, so this feels like a natural fit. To be honest, I'm sitting here at my desk, 3,000 miles away from Charlotte, afraid to cross the line on any more quips, lest Oakley hunt me down. If I was sitting next to him on the bench, or having him glower at me during practices, I would be giving 100 percent, no questions asked. Surely the Bobcats will fall in line. For Oakley, the position will require that he exercise a bit more prudence in his public comments. Earlier this week, in an interview with Miami radio station WQAM, for example, he referred to TNT commentator Charles Barkley as a "***hole" and cursed repeatedly, according to a transcript posted on SportsRadioInterviews.com.  That kind of thing will get you fined right out of the league by NBA Commissioner David Stern. Charlotte isn't going anywhere anyway, so this move rates an A+ based on the potential entertainment factor alone.

Here's Coach Oakley during a time-out..."Ok, guys there's 5 seconds left and we're down 4..Joe do that move Jordan did in the 1996 playoffs in game 4 of the semi-finals...Pete, you steal the ball like I did in game 5 against the west in the 1994 all-star game...Just try and look like me and mike--ready let's go...
How many examples of players turned analyst, coach, gm, rapist, talk show host, before we know players should just retire to an island somewhere and not try to relive the glory days through fancy titles....
Jordan is your classic-I'm bored with life, kinda of guy....Ofcourse, he has alot of friends who are in the same boat...So they throw a party and they get to chatting how it would be great if......Then a couple weeks later Oakley is now a coach...This reminds me of how people thought Matt Millen was supposed to be a good gm for the Lions, just because he played well in the NFL....But you never know how it will turn out, however,  you usually do...

TigerMAC, Jordan has been an Owner for what a year or so?? Give the guy a chance before you put him in line with Sterling... Yes he was a horrible GM but he thought he could do that job part time.... He has now been doing this full time and I think he deserves the oppoporunity....

And for the guy who says Oakley won't be a good coach, how do you know?? He has been coached by some the greatest coaches in the game and was more than an average role player... he played an important role on every team he was on(not counting the later years)....  I like the addition of Oakely, because he can teach these kids the right way to play the game... And I guarentee that wont mess with them... Even at this age, he would WHOOP them youngins...LOL Fighting not playing...lol

Michael Jordan is the NBA's second worst owner behind Donald Sterling. He has proven it in Washington as a GM & now in Charlotte as an GM/Owner...just the draft disaster and then re-signing of Kwame Brown proves either his ignorance and/or arrogance. He thinks of the team as a toy for him to enjoy when he's not playing golf (poorly). Larry Brown may be a walking time bomb with the players, but he ought to be the one as the GM in Charlotte instead of MJ's other golfing buddy, Rod Higgins. Jordan's actions as an executive have effectively cancelled out his accomplishments as a player. He is a joke and laughing stock in the Charlotte community and no one is impressed enough with him to buy a ticket to just to see him in his suite.
