The Nets were probably hoping to have Carmelo Anthony gift-wrapped and waiting for Mikhail Prokhorov when the Russian billionaire owner arrived in New Jersey today.

But that's not happening unless someone gets on the phone like right now and gets to work. What the Nets are planning for is that elusive meeting. Finally.

According to the New York Daily News, Denver has OK'd a meeting between the Nets and the Nuggets superstar and that could lead the way to a three-team deal that has been in various stages of negotiations for the past few weeks.

"If the meeting hasn't already taken place," as the Daily News puts it, then it's supposed to happen over the next few days. The Nets and Prokhorov's PR people had no comment on the time frame for the meeting.

During this "meeting," the Nets owner and other minority shareholders (like Jay Z), hope to persuade Anthony to commit long-term to the Nets.

According to the AP, even if Melo doesn't commit long-term, the Nets may go ahead with the trade, but scale it back somewhat. They would hope to bring in Melo and use the next few months to persuade him into staying. That was kind of Denver's plan too, but it doesn't appear to be working.

One other item of interest: If the Nets fail to get Anthony, the Nets won't just close shop. The Jazz's Andrei Kirilenko is a free agent this summer and knows Prokhorov well enough that the two have dinner in Russia when Kirilenko goes home every summer. According to the Daily News, Kirilenko is on the team's radar as a potential player and front-office official.

So while he's not exactly Carmelo Anthony, the Nets have a Plan B. Even if it's just Andrei Kirilenko.

Not every one, Kevin Durant just quietly resigned with small market Oklahoma. He is the true face of the future NBA.

Carmelo is making the right decision by remaining silent. It's a poker game.

For those of you complaining about NBA players being able to "pick and choose" the teams they want to play for, stop being "ignorant and catty" like a woman!

Professional sports organizations have always cut and traded players on a whim, regardless of whether or not they're still within their contracts. Why shouldn't a player be able to do the same?

1. Why should Carmelo cave into the Nuggets demands and go and play for one of the worst teams in NBA history (Nets) just so the Nuggets and their fan base get equal value in return? What about Carmelo's future?

2. When his contract expires, he is well within his rights to search out any opportunity he deems to be most profitable to him. Why do some of you have a problem with that?

3. He has not quit playing, but brings his "A" game every night, despite all the recent distractions. You cannot say he's quitting on the team.

Both the media and the Nuggets organization have made Carmelo out to be the fall guy, when he is playing well within the rules. He has done nothing, nor spoken anything wrong.

But we all know, "Haters will Hate!"

You can thank Queen LeWrong Blames for this drama .. every big name free agent to be will think he's bigger than the game thanks to the self-annoited ones dispicable display.   Melo is good ... but he's not that good ... he should feel lucky someone wants to overpay him to play for their team in the first place .. and for that matter, what's wrong with staying in Denver?   Pffft ... drama queens!

PATHETIC

The Nets should be embarrassed how this whole fiasco is going, there like a pyscho ex-girlfriend that wont stop calling, how is it possible that they are going to be able convince Carmelo, the fact they even have to convince Melo just shows how pathetic their franchise is, if Melo cant commit to the Nets at 65 mil in his homwtown, their organization might as well move to Siberia, as far as this utter nonsense about how much better the Nets will be in the future more fantasy land conjecture, Melo, Lopez, Billiups, Rip, seriously? Im sure Lebron and Wade are shaking in their sneakers, this isnt the Pistons of years ago, Billups and Rip are journeyman at this point of their careers, even as a Knick fan, looking at things objectively, if Melo truly wants to win a championship, he would go to Orlando/Dallas or just stay in Denver. Knicks are better but still not elite, lot of work to do, as far as the Nets, they just suck, lets be honest. Not hating on the Nets just a fact, when the Nets were going to the finals years back, the Knicks sucked, how it works, so all you Nets fan continue to kneel and pray hoping that Carmelo says yes but just know that any franchise that has to convince a player to take 65 mil to play for them is just PATHETIC, regardless if he say yes.

i told you JJ...there are a bunch of ignorant people that don't get it..he already has said he isn't speaking with the nets, but in a way not to insult them...and it woyld be great to play in brooklyn a few years from now but..and let me be as clear as i can..the nets aren't contenders with anthony and wont be in future, yet the knicks are automatically a contender with him, and he wants to win..the nets would have to try and build around him, knicks are already put together..stoudemire and anthony=formidable...lopez and anthony=non-imposing...he wants to be a knick and has said it over and over..but enough of you dont hear..blame the writers and ignorant fans..i wish a writer would jump off a bridge so the rest of moronic america will follow..i'm done

@JJWins, I'm sure the NEts appreciate your advice about reading a book on negotiating.  I mean it's not like they  hire the people who actually write those books....no, those people are worthless. They should come hire you because you read what those ppl they hired wrote.  Yea, there's a huge line of companies waiting to hire your avg. joe brain

I think Carmelo Anthony is a very good player, just a cut below elite. The Nets are acting like they are negotiating for the rights to the 60's Celtics or the Showtime Lakers. I'm not talking about Russell or Magic......I mean the whole team....Kareem, Worthy, Magic, Cooper, West as GM, the whole schebang.....

I appreciate Anthony wanting to explore his options, it's his right, he should. The Nets seem really desperate. It's sad. Please come take our millions.....pluzzeeee....
