Kevin Durant calls Chris Bosh a 'fake tough guy'

The NBA superstar clique is generally a tight-knit, insular group and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant is usually a soft-spoken, polite man.  Those realities changed a bit today, as Durant publicly called out Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh following a nationally-televised game between the two teams on Sunday.

Royce Young of CBSSports.com reports that Durant was upset with Bosh over a skirmish that took place in the first half.
"I was talking to my teammate and [Bosh] decided he wanted to put his two cents into it. I am quiet guy, laid back guy, but I’m not going to let nobody talk trash to me. He’s on a good team now so he thinks he can talk a little bit. There are a lot of fake tough guys in this league and he’s one of them."
"I’m no punk. I wasn’t even talking to him first off. He decided to butt in and I’m not going to just let that slide. Especially in our house. Like I said, he’s not one of those guys I look at and say he has a rap for talking back to guys or getting into it. He’s a nice guy. I’m not going to let that type of person say something to me like that."

The skirmish was sparked, according to the Associated Press , after a Bosh hard foul on Thunder guard James Harden.

Bosh and Durant received a double technical foul in the first quarter after Bosh hacked Harden to prevent a fast-break basket.
Here's video of the exchange that precipitated the double technical fouls on Bosh and Durant.

Durant's words mark another development in his career arc, as, up to this point, he's been content with proving himself on the court and avoiding any major exchanges of words off the court.

Here, though, Durant clearly felt that protocol had been violated. To go at Bosh in such a personal way -- poking fun at his decision to team up with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, to call into question Bosh's toughness -- shows an edge I can't recall seeing out of Durant. I kind of like it.

While many superstars couldn't get away with this type of negative commentary without catching a backlash, Durant will almost assuredly skate clean here because Bosh is reviled and mocked by so many fans for the exact reasons Durant mentions. Bosh missed a bunch of time recently with a high ankle sprain and made a huge fuss about how the injury occurred and he posed in an absolutely ridiculous Maxim shoot , for example. Who is this guy to pretend to play enforcer?

The only problem with Durant's comments, of course, is that the Heat defeated the Thunder, 108-103.  Knowing Durant and his legendary competitivess, the loss will likely stick in his craw far longer than anything Bosh did on the court.

Note: This post has been updated from a previous version to clarify quotes attributed to Durant.

Durant is a whole lot tougher than Bosh ever will be, and he is a good teammate.  Something Bosh will never be.  Begin the hatred between these two teams.

Kevin Durant calls Chris Bosh a 'fake tough guy'

Here we go again. The constant barrage of negativity towards the Miami Heat. What's the statute of limitations for this sort of empty grudge hating loathing sort of thing? One season? Two?

This kind of jawing goes on every night at every teams' gym from high school to the NBA. Ben Golliver, you wuss. You call the Maxim shoot ridiculous, why? Jealous, maybe? Chris Bosh has more class in his sock drawer than you and your pathetic wanna-be-a-writer life. The only reason you give this trivial exchange of words any weight is because you're another run-of-the-mill Heat hater. You're a master of negative hyperbole.

If the shoe was on the other foot, you would happily defend Bosh if he was playing for your favorite team. All this made up criticism is mystifying. People like you create stories out of thin air. All attitude and no substance. You hide behind words and talk about players like you were their college roomate. You failed to mention that Bosh played six years with the mostly terrible Toronto Raptors. He never asked to be traded, never exhibited crass behavior, and led his team to the conference title and the playoffs in the 2006 season. He worked hard to add 50 pounds to his frame to become one of the premier power forwards in the NBA. The reason many people never heard of Bosh before the free-agency period last summer, besides playing for a non-contender in Canada, is that he never got into any trouble and never said anything controversial or negative about anyone.

After playing and winning Olympic gold in 2008, he befriended Dwyane Wade. This friendship would ultimately have a hand in his signing with the Heat. Bosh is the kind of player you want your kids to emulate. He's no diva like Kobe or even Lebron. He's actually a lot like Kevin Durant, which makes your little story that much more ridiculous. Durant should get to know Bosh a llittle more before making a knee-jerk rash statement like he did. There is no pattern of behavior too suggest that Bosh is a punk, an enforcer, or any such adjectives this writer considered using.

As for the legendary competitiveness you so cleverly give to Durant, how do you measure that as compared to his NBA peers? Do you have a top secret competitive drive measuring machine hidden somewhere? I saw first hand what competitiveness is. Dwyane Wade's 2005 Miami Heat were down 2-0 in the NBA finals against the Mavericks. He single-handedly took over games and willed his team to a NBA Championship and was named Finals MVP. That was a measurable dose of competitiveness.

You, on the other hand, don't measure up at all. You write non-stories. I hear the National Inquirer is hiring.

It's not Durant's fault they let Bosh out of Jurrasic Park 30 minutes late making him cranky. Velociraptors are known to be cranky.

But on a serious note, most of the things that have been said are true. You could get what Bosh is getting from any decent big men in the league for half the price. He is overrated, soft, and...well no one else has said it so I will, he is one of the ugliest guys in the NBA with Noah and DJ Mbenga (and soon to be Kyle Singler, who hasn't seen the sun since...ever). I know that doesn't have anything to do with performance, but the dude is just annoying to look at when you watch the Heat. If you have seen the LeBron spoof of "What should I do" on Youtube, then you know what Bosh is all about.

Miami played well  but all they did was cry all game, Wade even got a technical for it.  Durant never pretended to be tough.  the 3 amigos are punks. Actually Wade is just damn good.  What cool city are you from? Don't front when your sitting on your tired recliner somewhere in Buffalo...

Kevin Durant calls Chris Bosh a 'fake tough guy'

Funny. From what I saw Durant was the one who ignited the conversation and it seems Bosh jokingly responded from the smirk on his face. Either way I can tell you that Bosh is soft on defense, but has a world of talent on offense.

As for the tough talk from Lebron ... he does that off the court, because he seems to appear on the court especially when its personal such as the way he lit up Kobe Bryant and don't even get me started how he did Cleveland. lol
