Aaron Brooks suspended for walking off court

About halfway through the fourth quarter of Houston's overtime win against the Grizzlies Saturday, Rick Adelman subbed for Aaron Brooks. No big deal, just a substitution, right?

Wrong. Brooks, apparently not liking the swap, walked straight past the Rocket bench and into the locker room. Not because he needed some treatment or was injured. Nope, he was just mad about the substitution.

As a result, the Rockets have suspended Brooks for a game, according to the Houston Chronicle. He'll be sitting out Monday's game against the Nuggets and did not travel with the team.

Brooks, who battled injury early on during the season after winning Most Improved last year, has been relagated to a backup role for the Rockets. The reason though is simply because he hasn't played that well at all this year. He's forcing horrible shots and trying to do way too much. Two things that definitely don't fit into Adleman's share-the-ball system.

This type of stuff happens with players. They have egos. They have emotion. Brooks is obviously frustrated with the situation but surely is most frustrated with himself and his play. In the long run, this will be a good thing for him and probably for the Rockets. The team has underachieved and when that sort of thing happens, emotions boil over.

That doesn't excuse it, but it at least makes it understandable.

Deuce - perhaps the thug moniker is a bit far fetched, but it is also possible that the writer is remembering an incident in Brooks' college carreer where he popped a UW player a couple of times and was suspended for that.

I am a duck fan, and in no am I saying the thug bit is warranted, but someone may be recollecting and making more, of an incident from this young man's past, and using that as his barometer.  Not saying it's right, just that it is possible.

My own take is that he is a highly emotional kid - plays like it and reacts like it.

Doubtful.  This isn't the local CYO league.

Ive been to a couple of NBA practices.  They still run laps and bleachers.

yes criticize someone who is black and automatically the race card comes out...surprise surprise
Criticism didn't get the "race card" pulled.  Moronic statements like "thug", whic seems to be all over these boards and only with respect to black players, made that happen.  I haven't seen one mention of race in response to sensible criticism.

Trust that he will be running plenty of laps in practice for awhile on top of being suspended.
Doubtful.  This isn't the local CYO league.

If you come down harshly on a player for being overly competative you would never attract free agent talent.
His actions weren't "overly competitive".  They were childish and selfish - similar to his play this season.

But the punishment has to fit the crime.  You won't see a season long suspension for a guy acting stupid.  And you can't hold one guy responsible for the league being full of prima donnas.  As montsho said, you have to show some discretion.  You also have to be fair.  One incident, one appropriate punishment.

Of course Aaron Brooks is frustrated the Rockets didn't sign him to a contract extension as they decided to wait until after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is finalized.   He's currently backing up Kyle Lowry who did resign with the Rockets (4 yr.=$24 million) during the offseason after they matched an offer he received from the Bulls.  He's probably uncertain how he fits into the Rockets future and it may also be a problem between him and Coach Rick Adelman?  However I do believe as a professional you must act accordingly throughout any situation I hope the Rockets resolve this minor issue and move forward, he's a good young PG with a bright future.

Brooks has looked frustrated this season. The injury and his questionable play is tolling on him. Plus, the Rockets once again have been hit hard by the injury bug, although they are the scrappiest team in the league and have beat the best teams in the NBA. I don't think they are underacheiving, just working with what they have. Brooks will bounce back, and anyone labeling him a thug is just an idiot. Probably a white idiot that uses the word "ni***r" quite often.

Yeah that's what it was about...

Wait, it wasn't. The criticizing was someone calling Aaron Brooks a 'thug'. Now since you have the answers why would orangeman call Brooks a 'thug'? What did he do to earn such a label by it's true definition? Go ahead. We'll wait...

Yeah, exactly. He hasn't done anything to be called a thug. Seflish, prima dona, me first, or anything of that would be warranted and legit. I'm African American myself and I would say the same thing as I already posted as such. But to simply toss out the label 'thug' on someone who hasn't done a darn thing similar to such makes you wonder why someone would say as such? If it isn't because he's African American then please enlighten us why orangemen decided to just call the guy a thug?

Or maybe you should have bothered to read the post that RedskinsDieHard was responding too before you made your comment. Sorry, but I'm tired of hearing folks say 'thug' at every moment when nothing even comes close to warranting such a label. Most of these folks have no idea what thug means and just toss it on young african american athletes. It's ignorant and the day I embrace ignorance is the day I become an idiot like them.

The NBA League should suspend this guy 10 games no pay... these thugs have no concept of employment and fans who pay their salaries.....time for this guy to be unemployed..
Huh? What thug? Do you know what the term even means? Quit tossing labels around with no merit. Selfish? Yes. Idiotic move on his part? Yes. Prima dona or a whiner with this move of his? Yes. But thug? This hardly defines what a thug is so stop with the stamping labels onto individuals. It makes you look rather ignorant.
