Brandon Roy to return this week

Hey, Portland, finally some news that lands on the good side.

Via Jason Quick's of The Oregonian's Twitter, Blazer guard Brandon Roy is set to return to play this week, maybe against Toronto but likely versus Detroit. Roy has sat out the past few weeks because of ongoing knee issues that led to him having arthtroscopic surgery.

Roy was reportedly cleared for full contact drills on Friday and but said he wants a couple practices before playing. He told Quick that when he returns, he wants to come off the bench. I'm speculating, but I wouldn't think Roy would play more than 30 minutes, at least for the first few weeks.

Roy last played Dec. 17 and has missed 28 games for Portland. Even when he returns, he probably won't be 100 percent, but his shutting it down was definitely a good thing. Hopefully he'll have a little more lift and a little more ability to play well for the Blazers down the stretch.

Currently the Blazers are 27-24, fourth in the Northwest and hanging on to eighth in the West. They've once again been killed by injuries, but maybe Roy's return will spark them back to the good side of health. Who am I kidding, but hey, one can hope.

Brandon Roy to return this week

I agree. with you Orygun. Portland is not close by any means and needs to re tool a little but Roy coming off the bench will give the 2nd unit some big punch. If he shows he can play the type of game Portland is playing and to no determent to the the team then I would rotate him in and based on matchup start Mathews and or Batum. It will be interesting to see what move Cho plans to make by the trade deadline which will answer a lot of questions. At least as the Blazers are they are fun to watch and at best a 7th seed and 1st round washout. At least I am looking forward to watching every game again instead of just doing it out of habit.

Brandon Roy to return this week

The second string could use Roy but they will have to play a slower tempo which may give them problems.  These last few games have really started to show the Blazer's lack of depth.  Starters are playing like 40+ minutes per game just because the second string can't produce.  Honestly, I hope the Blazers keep what they've got going with regards to the up-tempo, slashing, alley-oop dunking style of play, utilizing Aldridge a lot and keep Roy coming off the bench with a different look offense for the second string.  Perhaps something slower would help them turn the ball over less, and better half court sets.  Mills can practice half court offense with with Roy, and Cunningham.

At this point, I feel like Camby's return will be more profound.  The Blazers are being out rebounded a lot since his departure from the line-up.  Pryzbilla is showing good progress towards 100% but he doesn't look like he will get much of his leap back...which he didn't really have anyways.  He could be a bit quicker by march though and the Blazers can make a run at 6th in the west.

Worst case is Roy comes back and destroys the chemistry and the Blazers drop out of the playoffs, losing the last spot to the Memphis Grizzlies.

I have hope the Blazers will get 45 wins this season though. :) which will be good enough for 8th.

Brandon Roy to return this week

I've watched every game Portland has played this year, and I'm not sure that Roy coming back is a good thing. As others have mentioned, if he comes back playing the same type game he's been playing, it will adversely affect the team. Tonight watching the Blazers beat Chicago I was noticing how well everyone moved without the ball, and how many passes were to players cutting to the basket. The ball tends to stall when Roy has it, which takes other players out of their rhythm and out of the game. If Roy is smart enough to see this and doesn't try to be the do all player he's been, he could be helpful- especially in the 4th quarter. But the team has developed a different style since he's been out that has been effective for them. Coming back could easily disrupt what has been working well for them. LeMarcus will still get his shots because the Blazers want to work from the inside out. It's the rest of the Blazers that will suffer- especially Rudy Fernandez who has been playing much better and is obviously enjoying himself much more lately. If Roy does change his game, though, and that's a big if, he could really help this team . They are pretty thin on the bench.

Brandon Roy to return this week

You just aren't very smart. Sorry to break it to you but Brandon Roy coming back is AWFUL on so many levels. You can talk all you want about how Roy would be a great 6th man off the bench but that's because you don't know what you are talking about. Brandon Roy WON'T ACCEPT A LESSER ROLE. He is an ego-maniac. And for whatever reason Paul Allen won't stand up to him. If Roy wasn't calling the shots he wouldn't have received a max deal with ZERO insurance even though it was common knowledge to Allen & KP about his knees. Roy got over on the Blazers. He tries to come across as this meek mild mannered guy. But he's anything but that.

Thinking that Aldridge won't regress is so naive and just plain ridiculous. Roy will ruin everything. But don't take my word for it. Just wait and see for yourself.

Brandon Roy to return this week

Roy would be a great 6th man.  Give him heavy minutes in the 4th and let Wesely do his thing in 1-3.  We have blown way too many games while leading in the 4th quarter.  Roy can get us over the top!

Brandon Roy to return this week

Actually for the doomsday folks, Roy was projected to come back about now (three weeks following surgery). Brandon Roy is a very smart basketball player. His return is indeed good news. He will be a substantial boost to the team as it comes down the home stretch. Without Roy this team is not going to win a playoff game. With Roy, there is no telling how much he regains but we must see him try. LaMarcus Aldridge is not going to regress. He will continue to be the primary option. Once Marcus Camby re-enters the lineup and assuming the injured Cunningham is back Friday (cleared to play tonight) the team can begin to look like the deep team it is, No Roy, no joy.

CRAP!! This is HORRIBLE news!!!!

The absolute worst thing that could possibly happen to the Blazers is for Brandon Roy to come back.

He is done. Toast. Finished. Kaput. He can only hurt the team.

The worst part about this is Aldridge will regress to his former self. When Brandon Roy is playing the Blazers creativity and offensive rhythm completely SHUTS DOWN!!!

Blazer fans better get ready for Roy holding the ball at the top of the key for 20 seconds running his famous isolation plays that he can't even do anymore but still thinks he can because he won't accept reality. Paul Allen may be the owner. Rich Cho may be the GM. Nate McMillan may be the coach. But make no mistake. Brandon Roy calls all the shots when it comes to this franchise. He is a selfish player that cares more about his own stats than the success of the team. He won't accept coming off the bench or having the ball less. The Blazers already play the slowest tempo in the league because Nate McMillan is the worst play calling coach in the league. Add Brandon Roy back to the mix and the Blazers are going to be unwatchable.

The only hope for the Blazers is that Roy's knee completely goes out and he is forced to retire.

As long as Roy is back LaMarcus Aldridge won't have another good game all year. Don't believe me? Well then you weren't paying attention before. Trust me. The offense will no longer be ran through Aldridge. This is going to be a complete disaster!!

Brandon Roy to return this week

I hope the best for Brandon as well, he's a class act, and I hate that we won't be able to see him live up to his full potential, being so good, so young and having so much promise.  That being said, I wish he would shut it down for the rest of the year.  Our only hope is to build through the draft as the superstars of the league are all hung up on playing in LA, Miami or New York.  Being out smaller market size, we can scratch free-agency off the list of a way to build a title contender.  Hopefully a trade of Pryzbilla and or/Andre Miller can bring in some young talent.  We need to add another scorer on the perimeter.  I'm still holding hope that Nicolas Batum get a killer instinct, because he has all the talent, but I'm not holding my breath on that one either.  Go with the young guys, forget the playoffs and let's try to get a high lottery pick.
