Berger: Carmelo to L.A. is 'more than a rumor'

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com provides the latest on the Carmelo Anthony trade talks between the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers. Posted by Ben Golliver.

On this week's edition of CBSSports.com's NBA Drive video, Ken Berger provided the latest on possible trade discussion between the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers, centered around All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony and big man Andrew Bynum.

"Well, it's more than a rumor," Berger said. "There is some definite interest among some people in the Lakers organization to possibly trading Andrew Bynum for Carmelo Anthony. It's an opportunity that's just too good to pass up."

Berger said the reported trade discussions might also be an attempt by the Nuggets to improve on an offer from the New York Knicks, who are known to be interested in Anthony's services but reportedly aren't willing to sacrifice much via trade. "There's an element here of possible leverage play because the Nuggets would love to and need to have another team involved here otherwise they're just stuck negotiating against the Knicks," Berger said. "The Knicks aren't going to negotiate against themselves. It's become ever more complicated. I suspect this is not going to be the last twist and turn in this Carmelo road before the trade deadline."

Here's the video for this week's NBA Drive, hosted by Lauren Shehadi and featuring the conversation with Berger and a chat with my Eye on Basketball blogging buddy Royce Young.

Not happening, as in, no team will trade anyone for Bynum. The guy is not even going to be in the league in 5 years. I heard he wasn't playing tomorrow against Boston because he has a hangnail. Those can be pretty painful, mind you. Also, he has soreness in his foot from dropping his baby powder on it.
But if the Nuggets would like to go down as the stupidest team ever, by all means, make the trade. The Lakers should take note from the Yankees and what happened with Cliff Lee -- don't wait or hold out, just give the team what they want. Besides Kobe and Gasol, every other piece is interchangeable. And draft choices, please -- when/who is the last decent Laker pick? BTW, it was DFish in 1996.

This trade makes no damn sense, the nuggets want the world for melo, Nets offered last yrs top pick with another player and future picks and nothing, so the Lakers offer A.B.. for melo straight up,..no way, that dude cant stay healtly for shit, and he says theres interest in the lakers front office,,,well no shit moron, i think every teams front office has interest in getting Melo. Melo isnt going anywhere and why would teams like the Knicks trade for him when they can get him on the FA market next year. And for the lakers theres not enough balls to shoot with kobe and melo on same team....

Laughable, yeah I guess we were all laughing when people were talking Spurs this year being old and done, or last year when your Celtics hobbled like old cripples into the post season. Last time I checked the Spurs are 1st in the league and your C's got to the Finals. Talk aging but you and I both know that the great ones find players and keep coming at you. Now I will say that we have been more relevant sense your little time in the 80's, we have drafted better, traded better and have more rings these last 20 years then you hands down. Just because you made a trade for the OG Big 3, doesn't mean sh!t, and you beantowner know it. So you got a Ring, you made the Finals twice, and are doing a damn good job right now in the East. (for the record, I hope you come out ahead of the Heat), but c'mon we have been there 3 years in a row, we won 2, were 1-1 against eachother in that time, but even you can admit that last year you guys didn't look your best, even bored at times, going through the motions. Every great team does this. When our teams roll into town, it's the biggest game of the season for the other team, for us, just another game. When the stakes are cranked up, that's when we see your Celtics, My Lakers turn into a whole different monster. Do we need to finish #1 in the conf, you proved last year we don't, and I'm pretty sure LA doesn't either. It's a Luxery of energy we would rather save for the playoffs.
As far as the trade rumors, they were ridiculous from the start created by the Nuggets, so as far as Melo goes, send him East, let the Knicks have him, so you have to fight the playoffs threw him, as well as Stod, and the rest of them. I guarantee your fight to get back to the Finals will be harder , if you make it.
Good luck tomorrow, Celtics-Lakers always a classic.

As for Dwight Howard .. he has 1 1/2 years left on his contract.

He isn't going anywhere this season.   And if he was going to get traded next year, they'd be looking for top players in return and young ones at that ... NONE of which the Lakers will have to trade.

Gasol and Odom will be aging ... as will Kobe .... the Lakers are stuck with what they have and probably have this one last year to make a push.

I love the pipe dreaming LA fans ... HILARIOUS

Boltnut .. this "trade" doesn't make sense on so many levels it's laughable.

1.  NOONE is interested in taking Ron Artrests contract .. so forget about that being part of the deal.

2.  Gasol and Odom would be a good PF/C combo .. problem is, who's gonna sub in for em when they get pushed around and get all tired out?  Right now Bynum is the workhorse and Gasol and Odom do the cleanup work ... all that changes with Bynum out of the mix.

3.  Bynum's knees are suspect ... he might be done in 2 or 3 years at this rate.  And before you doubt that  ... look at other bigs that started having knee troubles and see how quickly they've dropped off the map when they have no vertical leap due to their knees.  The Nuggets wouldn't be so foolish as to take on that kind of risk.

It's more likely a trade to the Knicks or some other team willing to pony up picks and real talent.   Sorry.

And one more thing ...  Billups isn't goin to be part of this deal either ... that's even more laughable.  Where do these people come up with this stuff?  Hilarious
