Five members of the Detroit Pistons skipped shootaround on Friday. Posted by Ben Golliver. rip-hamilton

The Detroit Pistons have been a disaster all season, and after the organization failed to move any of its disgruntled veterans prior to Thursday's trade deadline, five players staged a "protest" by skipping practice on Friday, according to the Detroit News.
Tracy McGrady, Tayshaun Prince, Richard Hamilton and Chris Wilcox did not show up to Friday's morning shootaround. Ben Wallace also wasn't present, but has been dealing with an ongoing family matter for the past several weeks.
The players have not been happy with their coach, seemingly all season, for the way he communicates, among other reasons they've given.
A team's spokesperson provided (suspicious) medical excuses for McGrady and Prince, but had no explanation for why Wilcox and Hamilton missed shootaround. Additionally, Austin Daye and Rodney Stuckey showed up late, according to the paper.

Detroit's coach, John Kuester, has had his fair share of battles this season. Hamilton said he was "offended" by how Kuester handled his minutes while Prince said his moves were "buffoonery." He's clearly not cut out for managing this drama.

But even if your coach is terrible and in way over his head, there is no excuse for simply deciding not to show up to work. Certainly Pistons president Joe Dumars will need to discipline those who protested, unless he's joined his players and his fanbase by being past the point of caring anymore.

The Pistons, or whichever portion of the Pistons decides to show up, face off against the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 PM Friday night.

You know what? Lost in all this protest mess, is the fact that these guys make millions of dollars to play a childhood sport or just to sit on the bench and cheerlead. Millions of dollars! If I, a modest working class citizen decided to protest work because my boss was pissing me off, I would be out on my ass.  I'm just saying.  Get over it, and count your blessings.

As a Piston's fan I'm happy to see something happen to rock the boat - anything. This season has been unexcuseable. There needs to be some transparency - tell us what's going on, what are the plans for short term and long term.
Now we need to speculate, which leads to nasty finger pointing and it has created the communication mess they have now. Folks keep saying that because the Pistons are for sale that perhaps the current owner has tied the hands of Joe Dumars. If this is true, then just state that. If the owner did tie the hands of Dumars then that is not bright, because the team is probably worth less now. If the owner didn't say that, then Dumars is senile or not interested.
Keister isn't communicating about why he's playing the players he's playing - which is normally okay if there is any semblance of logic to what a coach is doing - but nobody can see it.
In conclusion, I will have patience for the team to rebuild or re-tool if I understand what's going on. How sad that Cleveland's moves make more sense.

I love how it's okay for black players to talk shiz about their white coach and then all get together and protest him by not showing up to work, and the team makes excuses for them.

You ever get the feeling that some Black Americans keep racism going when it doesn't necessarily have too???

Wow, nowhere in this article is race brought up. None of the other posters brought race up either..... YOU BROUGHT RACE INTO THIS DISCUSSION!!!

Oh, but it's the Black Americans that keep racism going right???

Typical of a prejudiced and ignorant BIGOT!!!! Accuse others of being the true racists......

Some things never change.....

I love how it's okay for black players to talk shiz about their white coach and then all get together and protest him by not showing up to work, and the team makes excuses for them.  If it was the other way around, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be forming a protest against the team unless the teams kicked down some hush money to them.  You ever get the feeling that some Black Americans keep racism going when it doesn't necessarily have too???  It just makes me sad to think that in 2011 with a half black American as our President, that this kind of stuff still goes on.

If it was a team of white players you would be talking about the Indiana Pacers and they have fixed this problem by also hiring a white head coach in Frank Vogel...  It's kind of ironic of you to bring race into a story that isn't reported to have anything to do with race and then complain about "Black Americans" keeping racism going when they don't have to.  This is an issue of a coach benching a guy like Rip Hamilton when the Pistons could use his leadership on the court and the veterans on the team recognizing the mistreatment of one Rip.

They should all be suspended without pay and fined by the NBA for their conduct unbecoming an NBA professional player. Their season is lost and its a message needed, to all NBA players. The SIXERS will sucker punch an early win tonight. These issues should be settled in locker room, off playdays in team meetings. This is crap. This should not be allowed as a sign of the times in NBA. I think Ben Wallace is the only one to be exempt since his issues have been clearly documented.

WOW....IN THE REAL WORLD....

I think I will protest going to work because I dont like my boss either.  Anyone want to save my place at the unemployment line afterwards?

Seriously...these guys are out of touch with realitiy.  If you are not signing the checks, then you are not calling the shots. PERIOD.

Are they still giving you paychecks? Then get your butt to practice. If you don't like Detroit then you shouldn't have signed there.

Detroit really needs to go with a youth movement though. They are not even close to being a playoff team as currently assembled. They really should have moved Tayshaun Prince out of all of them.

Dumars isn't listening to the fans and never will. He publicly stated his goal is to sign Prince to another contract......  and supposedly Dallas offered Detroit a player and a 1st round pick for Prince and Dumars turned it down.....  go figure.
