Wizards buy out Mike Bibby; Headed to Heat?

The Washington Wizards have reportedly bought out point guard Mike Bibby and he could be headed to the Miami Heat. Posted by Ben Golliver. mike-bibby-wash

Last week, the Washington Wizards traded point guard Kirk Hinrich to the Atlanta Hawks in a five-player deal that brought back point guard veteran Mike Bibby. Monday morning, we noted that the Wizards were getting close to buying out Bibby.

Monday afternoon, Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com both reported that the Wizards completed their buyout of Bibby. Yahoo! Sports reported that the agreement included a big-time concession from Bibby: "Guard Mike Bibby agreed to give up entire $6.2 million salary for the '11-'12 season to get buyout with Wiz to play for winner, source says."

The Washington Post reported that "Portland, Miami, Boston, San Antonio, the Los Angeles Lakers and possibly Denver are believed to have interest" in signing Bibby once he clears waivers.

Sam Amick reports, however, that the Heat are the leader in the clubhouse.
Mike Bibby, who will reportedly reach a buyout with Wash. and give back more than $6 million for next season, intends to sign with Miami. He has to clear waivers first and there's the standard disclaimer that something could go awry, but his intent is to join the Heat. For protocol's sake, I obviously have a source. Just ran out of characters. In case that wasn't clear.
Bibby is a playoff-tested point guard who is averaging 9.1 points and 3.6 assists in 29.4 minutes per game this season. While he's no spring chicken, he's an upgrade over Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo, Miami's two current options at the point.

The Palm Beach Post says the Heat should make a run at Bibby.
He’d start here immediately. And his brother-in-law, Eddie House, is on the team. He’s not close to what he was as a defender, and his assist totals have been modest the past few seasons. But he was shooting a career-high 44 percent from three. He’s played in plenty of close and critical games, first with Sacramento and then with Atlanta. And, as was evident late in the loss to the Knicks (when New York could leave it to Chauncey Billups to take control), the Heat desperately needs another cool hand on the floor with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, both of whom tend to force the action.
While this could turn out to be a great get for the Heat, the trade and buyout is already a definite positive for the Wizards, who were quietly one of the big winners of the trade deadline. Not only did they get out of Hinrich's $9 million contract this year and $8 million contract next year, they reportedly save $6.2 million of future money to Bibby, got a young prospect in Jordan Crawford and added a draft pick too. For a team that needs maximum flexibility and youth so it can build around franchise point guard John Wall, that's a pretty nice haul.

Wizards buy out Mike Bibby; Headed to Heat?

How does the Heat even have enough cap room to sign guys like Mike Bibby or Troy Murphy?

The entire Miami team would sign a deal with the devil to buy a championship ring. By all their player settling for a pay cut to be on the team is the same thing as buying a ring. It won't be long until they are buying the refs. Bibby is shooting 43% from beyond the arc .......big deal....he is only averaging 10 points a game which will go down in a move to Miami. I can't wait until the Heat fall in the first round of the playoffs.

In PER Chalmers ranks #51 out of qualified point guards. Bibby ranks #47. In short neither of them should or would be starting on 90% of the teams in the NBA. Would Bibby be an upgrade for Miami? Probably not a noticable one, but what else can they do?

Bibby A.K.A " Team Dime" is going to Heat?

As a Sacramento King fan who knows Mike Bibbys game I can tell you that Miami got a clutch point guard who can drop dimes,
shoot the three ball, still have big games once in awhile, he has a high basketball IQ, and can make clutch shots and is clutch in
the playoffs. Everyone inSac town is pulling for u Bibby!

After watching the Knicks beat the Heat the other night which was most enjoyable I think it would be a good move for the Heat to pick up Bibby.  Wade is a driving shooting guard and LeBron likes to have the ball in his hand to make any of his numerous moves to the hoop so with the addition of Bibby the Heat can have LeBron and Bosh in the game with Bibby and his high basketball i.q. controlling the game and dishing out the ball to the big time scorers. Then the heat can take Bibby and LeBron out and insert Wade in and let him do what he does so well with Bosh, or dish it to Haslem down low.  I'm not suggesting that the Heat make one of their stars a second stringer or that I know more then a head coach about rotations off the bench but I do believe Bibby would be that missing piece that helps the Heat become more cohesive and have less troubles that come along with having two mega stars and one star(Bosh) on the same team.  Bibby is team player and a good on the court leader as well as in the locker room.  It's still Wades team no doubt, it's just good to have a shooting guard and a passing guard as well and thats what Bibby would give to the Heat!

Wizards buy out Mike Bibby; Headed to Heat?

The guy has made tens of millions of dollars in his career, so I don't see the winner mentality in this decision.  He saw that he had a contract with a team going nowhere and had its future PG and so he nudged or forced his way out.

It also makes you wonder why the Heat even signed a PG at the start of the year when they had to have known they could go sign one for pennies on the dollar after March 1.

Good move for the heat. They add depth, 3 point threat, and experience.

Great move by the Hawks, and then the Wizards. Bibby is a total joke.

This is something that's wrong with the NBA.  In the final months of the season, if a player wants to be waived, he can ask a team to waive him and become a free agent and play anywhere he wants. Bibby was TRADED away and then waived by the team (Wizards) that traded for him.  They basically got nothing in return.  The same is going to happen with Troy Murphy.   Jerry Stackhouse used to do this almost every season.  It's wrong, and the NBA needs to change the way this works.  Baseball goes through a waiver process, allowing the weaker teams to become stronger.  The NBA needs to consider something similar.
