According to the Boston Herald , the Celtics have come to terms with point guard Carlos Arroyo on a pro-rated veteran's minimum contract for the rest of the season.

The thinking in signing Arroyo is to give the Celts some added depth behind oft-injured reserve Delonte West, who is currently out with a sprained ankle.

Arroyo was, of course, waived by the Miami Heat earlier this week to make room for Mike Bibby. Arroyo was productive for the Heat, but not quite the offensive threat they were interested in, especially as their starter. So the Celtics get a quality backup point guard for the stretch run.

Center Chris Johnson, who was with the Celtics on a  10-day contract, was informed he wouldn't be given a second such deal. The Celtics were interested in a number of players in the buyout market, but hung back a bit, not opting to go for added depth inside.

The Celtics are banking on both O'Neals -- Shaquille and Jermaine -- to regain their health and contribute heading into the postseason. They used the last roster spot on Arroyo, thinking they would be fine on the inside with what they had. Obviously Danny Ainge figured depth behind Rajon Rondo was a more pressing matter.

Pending a physical, Arroyo could join the team as early as Sunday in Milwaukee.

Sure - Bynum would have rescued the Lake from that 40-point blowout in game 6.  Yeah, like that would have happened...

One thing you learn in any sport. sometimes the guy you let go winds up doing bigger things. Take the Marlins, they let Jorge Cantu go, he went to the Rangers and was playing in a WS in 2010. Same with Cody Ross, instead of dealing him away, they put him on waivers, the Giants picked him up and he has a WS ring for it. Stick Arroyo on a team that has a better cast and coach, the Heat will find out that with a change of scenery and philosophy, that Arroyo > Bibby. I think they already realize Chalmers > Bibby ?

"The Celtics signing Arroyo means nothing to heat because Boston might have to beat Chicago first and that looks highly unlikely! "

I don't know where you get this idea from. Boston would face Orlando, not Chicago, in the 2nd round of the playoffs and Miami would take on the Bulls. Miami will be tested mightily by the Bulls and may be ousted by them.
Carlos Arroyo will have a minimal to zero impact on the Celtics run to the Eastern Conference championship, right now it looks like a Bulls vs. Celtics matchup.

All keep doubting the Celtics and slamming the Perkins trade and talk about how Shaq and Jermaine O'Neal ar too old to lead the Celts to a Finals, or past the Bulls at that. They don't need them to, wake up and smell reality, and it smells like a team that relies heavily on it's 4 ALL STARS. Their successs hinges on KG initiating defense, Rondo's picking up the pressure in the backcourt, and Ray and Paul picking it up. And who the hell wants to guard Shaq? I don't care how old he is, he's still 320 pounds! Kristic is severly under-rated at that. Will be a GREAT playoff run.

I like Arroyo.  More than 40% from outside the 3 point line?  That's exceptional.  Heat fans, particularly Hispanic ones, are slammin this release.  "You waive Arroyo because you sign Bibby?  Are you serious?"  They like Arroyo and so should we.  He can play!  As for Perk being the difference in Lakers beating the Cs in game 7 last year, nonsense!  The Cs were DESTROYING the Lakers without Perk until the refs started calling every finger brush by the Celtics while not calling absolutely violent muggings or "over the backs" by the Lakers.  37 foul shots for the Lakers, 17 for the Celtics.  The biggest free throw differential in the history of playoff basketball!  Enough said!  The loss had nothing to do with Perk.

It's a good signing.  Instead of getting Murphy and Bibby...they got Murphy and Bibby-lite.  Delonte & Arroyo can spell Rondo for few mins a game.  Rondo almost never comes out.  They got a situational player for short money.  No prob.

Exactly!  These petty additions of marginal players simply shows how insecure the Celtics are with their bench.  As for the endless whines about how Perkins would have made a difference: he missed less than 2 games in the Finals, so he was healthy for 5. Bynum, a clearly superior player, was playing injured all series, healthy for none.  Also, do Celtic fans forget that in '08 both Bynum & Ariza were hurt.  If both were healthy, clearly a different story....   Anyway, the Celt's & their fans must somehow think a couple of washed-up O'Neils, who both should retire next year, are gonna get them thru.... Sorry, but with that line-up they'll never make the Finals, let alone stand a chance against the Lakers front line....

First, I really wish they did not let go of Chris Johnson until Shaq came back because he was a great filling and was there for rebounds and avg defense.  Second, Carlos Arroyo will help the Celtics get ready for the playoffs.  Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo can't keep up this type of minutes leading up to the playoffs.  I am not afraid of the Miami Heat, I am afraid of the Chicago Bulls or maybe even the New York Knicks when they figure the new team out.  Miami Heat have no half court offense and NO DEFENSE!!! Any move Ainge thinks of, I am okay with.  We still have the best record in the East, this move can't hurt us.
