Shaquille O'Neal out indefinitely with sore foot

Boston Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal is out indefinitely with a foot injury. Posted by Ben Golliver. shaq-asw

Update: The Boston Globe reports on Monday that O'Neal will miss at least a week.
Boston Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal, plagued by various nagging injuries, has played in just 36 games this season and hasn't made an appearance since February 1.

CSNNE.com reports that O'Neals absence will continue indefinitely due to "right foot soreness."
The Celtics have no idea when the 7-foot-1 center, who turned 39 years old Sunday, will return to action. When asked about O'Neal and a likely return date, coach Doc Rivers acknowledged he had no idea. "[O'Neal] worked out with us the other day," Rivers said. "Some of the pain returned."
Rivers spoke with Ed Lacerte, the team's head trainer. "Eddie just said don't expect him anytime soon," Rivers said.
The Celtics haven't missed a beat in O'Neal's absence, or anyone else's for that matter. Boston has seen virtually every member of its rotation miss time due to injury this season - and they recently traded starting center Kendrick Perkins - but it hasn't impacted their ability to roll through the regular season.

Without O'Neal, the Celtics have played more small ball as they work to integrate center Nenad Krstic (acquired for Perkins) and free agent big man Troy Murphy, who was signed to bolster their frontcourt depth. As of Monday, the Celtics sat atop the Eastern Conference with a sparkling 46-15 record.

O'Neals numbers have taken a big hit this year - he's averaging 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in 20.7 minutes - and the end is fast approaching. At this point of the season and at this juncture of the 39 year old O'Neal's career, it's naive to maintain hope that he will be in tip top shape come playoff time. With that said, his raw size and ability to give fouls against guys like Dwight Howard, Joakim Noah and Andrew Bynum would be a huge asset for Rivers. But Boston's roster is as asset-rich as any in the league, even with a sidelined Shaq.

What you obviously fail to see is Troy Murphy, and jermaine will be there for emergencies for the most part, as is arroyo. Nobody they have picked up recently is going to get major minutes, especially in the playoffs. Nedad is playing just fine, and is more than serviceable enough to do what doc needs him to do. His jumper is another dimension for the Celtics. They're better than your team so live with it. And, if you're going to try and just talk junk at least be good at it, Now go get your shinebox

Lafatman .. i hope you're right.   The Celts don't need a dominant Center .. all they need is bodies, and Shaq and Jermaine are just that .. as well as Kristic.  Although, Kristic has fit in better than a lot of people expected pretty much right away.  Murphy still seems to be adjusting, but should come around.  And Big Baby is a very good player to come off the bench.

So if Shaq or anyone else needs to rest up to get healthy, as long as the Celts keep winning, who cares.   If they're all ready by the time the playoffs start it will be an added bonus.

BLEED GREEN!!!!   ... Speaking of Green, he was a great pickup and the Celts are starting to go small and quick at the end up games.  So far it's working, but it's still a work in progress.

Shaquille O'Neal out indefinitely with sore foot

LOL, this is classic Shaquille O'neal the last 10 years.  Even with Lakers and Heat.  Shaq is injured the whole second half the season with nagging injuries and then come last week of the season he is superman again and can play.  Shaq i'm sure has some tweeks but this guy don't wanna play till it counts, he is too lazy and fat to play a 82 game season so he sits on the bench till its time for real season.

The only thing they're deep in is mediocre players up front.  Nenad, Shaq, Jermaine and Troy don't scare anybody and will be at a disadvantage / get toasted against most quality players at their position.  I am totally loving how the Celtics are so desperate for help that they are trolling in the gutter for anybody with 2 legs.  Why don't they sign Bill Walton while they're at it??!!    LMFAO!!!

You're 100% correct. I wouldn't play him or the oft injured Jermaine until the 2nd round of the playoffs. Thet know what they're doing

The guy the Celtics are really missing right now is Glen Davis. They haven't been able to replace Davis's rebounding, and Davis was the only guy in the second unit that could rebound, which is one of the bigger reasons why the second unit gets outplayed (the other being that they're all new to the Celtics). Troy Murphy could be a guy that steps up on the boards (4 rebounds in just 15 minutes yesterday, and he has recent 10+ rebounds/game credentials in his career), but he and his shooting still seem to be out of shape.

Perfect! The Celtics didn't sign him for his offense, they signed him for his size and ability to "plug up the middle" on the defensive end. If and when he comes back, he knows he's not a primary option on offense and will get out of the way when he needs to.
So you're okay playing 4 on 5 on both ends of the court?  I would be worried about that.  Teams are not going to just let Shaq "clog up the middle" -- they will run plays, like pick and rolls, that are going to require Shaq to actually move and try to guard someone which he just can't do anymore, especially if he is out of shape.  Run pick and roll and the Celtics, with Shaq in the game, are going to be hurting if the opponent knocks down the wide open short and mid-range jumpers that will be there for the taking.

Shaquille O'Neal out indefinitely with sore foot

The only reason Shaq is on this team is for the playoff games against the Lakers and Orlando. The team has to make some excuses to keep him on the injured list while they determine who will help them in the playoffs and who won't. He had a full work out with them and his foot started to hurt. Come playoff time, when necessary he will play through any pain he may experience. He is there for the Boston's games against teams with scoring big men. He is not there to waste time playing in meaningless games at this time of year. Boston did the same thing last year. Come playoff time he will be on the roster and will be used to foul and plug the middle, which he is still good at. Rivers is an excellent coach understanding this and Shaq understands his role.
