Erik Spoelstra, LeBron react to 'crygate'

So evidently the Miami Heat cried yesterday. It made big news. We're all talking about it today.

This morning, Erik Spoelstra met with the media following the Heat's practice and did what any damage control expert would tell him to do: Blame it on the media.

"I think you guys (the media) can probably take anything I say and turn it into a story," Spoelstra said. "I was shocked when [PR man Tim Donovan] told me about it this morning that it's actually making the news. I think you guys can be a little more creative than that. I will say one thing, the guys care. Nobody was whimpering in the locker room."

"It's a classic case of sensationalism [by the media]," Spoelstra continued. He then said he didn't regret it and even tried to joke it away by dubbing it "crygate." (I must admit, that's pretty clever.)

While saying it, Spoelstra had the look of a man that knew he has royally screwed the pooch but was trying to just laugh it off as no big deal. Couldn't believe it was actually making the news? And you didn't know until this morning? Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah right.

Spoelstra kind of backtracked when asked if players were actually crying. He kind of said no, just saying heads were down and there was lots of noise.

It was an obvious plan of attack from the Heat as Spoelstra waited until he was asked about it and then played dumb, pulling the blame the media routine. It's one of the easiest ways to deflect criticism. It's not my fault. You guys are the ones making a big deal of it. I prefer people to stand up and tell it how it is. I think the general public (and media) respect that more than pointing fingers. It wouldn't have been hard for Spoelstra to say, "Yeah, a couple guys were upset. They cared about the game. We're not going to apologize for caring."

LeBron had his coach's back on the matter. "Spo is the captain... we stand behind anything he says."

I do think this is an example of us -- fans, media, general onlookers -- of kind of getting excited about a simple statement. So the Heat may or may not have cried a bit in the locker room. Just like most anything Heat related, it's turned into big news. We'll all move on here soon enough when they choke a crunch time play this week.

Erik Spoelstra, LeBron react to 'crygate'

I can only flashback to the Tom Hanks line in the movie A League of Their Own.  "There's NO Crying in Baseball" .  I guess now we can say that there IS crying with the Miami Heat.  Good grief act your age and not your Shoesize!

Erik Spoelstra, LeBron react to 'crygate'

My god, is Erik Spoelstra is a smacked ass or what? The most important attribute needed to be an effective head coach in the modern NBA is CREDIBILITY, and Spoelstra has NONE. He's never played in the NBA, so why should future HOFers like Wade and Lebron respect him? I'm not saying the Heat stars are blameless for the team's struggles, but I guarantee you that if this team had a stronger head coach, the Heat would have at least five more wins right now. Imagine if the Heat had Doug Collins as their head coach instead of Spoelstra. I know the Sixers signed him before last season was over, but just imagine. Just look at the 76ers, with essentially the same roster as last year, Collins has proven he can coach circles around the hapless Eddie Jordan. Why? He brought instant credibility as a former #1 pick and a top-notch TV analyst.

And now, on top of not knowing his ass from the hole in the rim, Spoelstra blames his careless comments on media portrayal. The guy is just all-around clueless. If the Heat don't win the NBA title this year, he should be fired during the press conference while addressing their final playoff loss. That is, if the Heat know whats good for them.

Ha ha ha, this just keeps getting better and better.  As someone mentioned, karma is a bitch.  They still may have the last laugh, but it's been oh so entertaining.  Is almost as good watching Tiger crash down to Earth.  Oh the joy.

I am confused.  Was there crying? Whimpering? Heads hanging?  Is the clearest thing that Spoelstra is near the end of his Heat coaching career?  Look, USA Today includes a note each day about the Heat stats for that day or season.  So whatever these clowns do is news.  I'd prefer USA Today drop the stat box but they don't listen to me.  James and Wade believe it is 'Heat against the world.'  What they don't get is that much of our dislike for them is due to their cockiness, making a show of themselves to the exclusion of the rest of the team, James shoving the Cavaliers nose in it by his ESPN announcement,  and an egotistical self-aggrandizing display that is not good for sports or the NBA.  We don't hate them as individuals or as a team.  We enjoy seeing the proud humbled, the financially wealthy look poor in spirit, and yes, we love to know the giggling, high-fiving, 'we have more money the god' jerks cry like girls in their locker room.  Thanks to coach Spoelstra for giving us this victory and adding a little humiliation to the Heat "stars."
