Perkins calls Pau 'soft', Phil Jackson 'arrogant'

Most everyone said it when the Thunder acquired Kendrick Perkins. He’s going to bring something different to town. He’s tough, he’s big, he’s physical and he’s not shy about speaking his mind. If Chris Bosh is a fake tough guy, Perkins is every bit of real tough guy as you can get. And in a locker room that’s mostly tight-lipped with every cliche down pat and ready to use in any situation, Perkins has a candidness that we haven’t really ever seen here.

In the newest issue of ESPN the Mag , Perkins and Kevin Durant were both asked a couple of the same questions with both having mostly differing opinions. All of it was pretty interesting, but the question, “Lakers: Team to beat or old news?” brought out the best in Perk.

“Yesterday’s news,” he said. “I don’t like Pau Gasol or Phil Jackson. Phil is arrogant. Pau is soft. Kobe tries to bring out his toughness, but he’s still soft.”

Well then.

Durant’s answer? “They’re the reigning champs and still playing like it.” See the difference there? Like I said, Perk might take a little getting used to in OKC. I actually wondered to myself if these quotes were even real or if I was missing the point of some kind of fictional, made up quote piece.

Most felt when OKC got Perkins though that he was going to bring more than just defense and rebounding to the young Thunder. He was going to add toughness. Grit. And a new attitude. One of his biggest assets is the way he defends and muscles against a team like the Lakers and obviously, he's not intimidated by the defending champs a bit.

I'm sure a lot of those feelings come from the fact Perkins was formerly of the Celtics who, you know, don't like the Lakers a whole lot. Perkins has had his fill of Gasol and Jackson the past couple years, meeting the Lakers in the Finals twice in the past three seasons.

The Thunder's still waiting on Perkins' first appearance which could come as early as tonight versus the Wizards. There's some thought he might play a little before really settling into his starter's role Wednesday against the Heat. Either way, we'll be seeing Perkins in a Thunder jersey by the end of the week and it won't just be about the attitude he's bringing, but about what he adds on the floor too.

Sorry but Pil Jackson only has 11 rings and that will be all he gets because there will be a new champion this year.

I hope Kendrick Perkins doesn't shoot his mouth off like this on a regular basis with the Thunder. Pau is a great player, hands down, and Phil Jackson is an icon. We Thunder fans want our team to get better, and I hope Perkins brings us some playoff success, but he may not fit in very well with the classy guys on the Thunder roster. I think there's been a healthy respect between the Lakers and Thunder so far, and I feel the Lakers know we are an up-and-coming team that will be giving them a run for their money, but I would prefer to keep it respectful rather than talk trash and actually motivate the Lakers to step it up against us like they did the other day down in San Antonio. It's better to beat the giant while sleeping than to make it mad. Hopefully someone will tell Perkins to open up a can of STFU and simply let his play on the court do the talking. He had a nice night tonight in just 20 minutes with 9 rebounds. Not a bad start.

I'd respect trash talking from a player not named Perkins. A highly overrated big body. He can mess with Pau but it's okay when Pau the softie owns the tough guy Perkins when and if they play OKC in the playoffs. I just think if your going to talk trash you better be able to back it up. Phil has 12 champs so I think he's entitled to be a little arrogant/confident. And i guarantee Phil will get the better of the war of the words against Perk hands down. Yes Perk can say what he wants but in the end he will end up looking like a clown.

the celtics cry about not having Perky for game 7 last year. " this group has never lost!" they talk about Perky like he's a mixture of Chamberlain, Russel, and Shaq combined into one.  In fact he's so indespensible that they traded him away.  He must be super good!

Perkins -- 6.4ppg and 6.1rpg for his career
Gasol -- 18.8ppg and 9.1 rpg career (double digit rpg this year and last)

And Gasol is the "soft" one Perkins?  How many games have you missed last year and this?  How about Gasol?  Food for thought.

You know, I really do not get the whole Pau Gasol is soft thing anyway....three seasons ago Boston beats LA in the finals and all we hear is how "soft" the Lakers are, especially Gasol.  Fast forward two titles later, and you'll hear many of the same people switch seemlessly between deriding Pau as "soft" and then crying about how unfair the trade with Memphis was that brought the great Pau Gasol to LA, that it was some sort of NBA conspiracy to "allow" Memphis to trade the all-everything Pau Gasol to LA for a bag of peanuts.  Just saying people -- either Pau Gasol is the greatest PF in the NBA and the real reason the Lakers are winning titles or he's the big softee and Kobe is winning in spite or, not because of, Pau Gasol.

Well Perkins can talk when he starts putting up numbers like Gasol.  Until then, STFU.  Gasol may be a bit undersized when he has to play C instead of his natural PF but he is clearly one of the the best, if not the best, PF in the NBA right now.  As for Phil Jackson, sounds like somebody has gotten under Perkins's skin a little bit which is fine with me.  11 NBA titles (and I don't care who you coached to get them) gives you a reason to be, maybe, a little arrogant----although that same "arrogance" might be seen by others as "confidence".  Close call.  That said, let Perkins run around trying to prove how "tough" he is and "soft" Gasol is and worrying about whether or not Phil Jackson is arrogant---the Lakers will just keep playing their game, the game that has sent them to 3 straight NBA finals and 2 straight titles while being "tough" I guess got Perkins shipped out of Boston for a bad of magic beans.
