The Sacramento Kings have reportedly reserved new franchises names in case they relocate. Posted by Ben Golliver. maloofs

It's been nothing but bad news for fans of the Sacramento Kings lately, as all signs point to the franchise relocating to Anaheim.

Wednesday's news hit like a gut punch: reported that a lawyer representing the team's ownership group, the Maloof family, has filed the necessary paperwork to reserve multiple names for the franchise in the event it relocates to Southern California.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office received an application on March 3 by a Nevada corporation seeking the exclusive right to use the name "Los Angeles Royals."
Another application filed the same day reserves the name "Anaheim Royals." The city of Anaheim, which owns the Honda Center, has reportedly insisted that any team playing there carry the city's name.

The web domains and have also been registered within the past three weeks.
The Sacramento Bee also reported the filings.

This is a common, and necessary, legal step during a relocation effort, and it's not usually undertaken unless the ownership group is serious about a potential move.

During the former Seattle Supersonics' transition to Oklahoma City, website domain registration information was cited in the first reports of the franchise's name.

It's worth noting that the "Kings" team name is already taken in Southern California because the National Hockey League's L.A. Kings have been in existence since the 1960s. As for the Royals moniker, it dates back to the days before the Kings franchise settled in Sacramento, as the team had previously been called the Rochester Royals, Cincinnati Royals and Kansas City Kings.

In other words, this just got even more serious, folks. A report regarding the Kings' applications for the new names drew nearly 200 comments in less than four hours on Kings blog As many fans noted, the Kings recently played in throwback jerseys that bore the name "Royals." Brutal.

I don’t know nor do I understand why the NBA would allow another team in the Los Angeles area. There are the Lakers and Clippers of which the Lakers own the town.

I don’t understand why the Clippers moved there. They were in a good market in San Diego. With the proper marketing San Diego would be an ideal place for a NBA franchise. A professional team can hang it up if they expect any tax payers money to build a stadium in any city in California, even back when the Clippers decided to move that was a dead issue.

I certainly can not see that changing any time soon. Los Angeles will always be Laker territory.

As far as Los Angeles fans going to Anaheim to watch a basket ball game is pure conjecture. Most sports fans are very fickle in the Southern California area as there are lots of things to do. The main thing about the Southern California fan is they might go watch a winner, but certainly not a team that is losing constantly.

Then there is the money that the Lakers and Clippers would want to extract from the Kings from moving into their territory. Tell the Kings it ain’t gonna be cheap, so bring your check books and your bank statements to prove you have the money in the bank.

The family that own the Kings have extensive holdings in Las Vegas such as gambling facilities and hotels, why not consolidate in Vegas. There would be lots of visitors that would pay to see their home team play if they are scheduled to play while they are there on vacation. This could be every ones home away from home.

3 NBA teams and no NFL teams.    Very Interesting.

What about St. Louis, Seattle, Baltimore, Kansas City, San Diego and even a 2nd team in Chicago seems to make more sense than a third team in LA where the Lakers are dominant and the Clippers struggle.

Kings to L.A/Anaheim would be ridiculous, why would the NBA want to over saturate that market? It already has the Clippers and Lakers, they dont need another team. If anything, they should go to Seattle and see if the citizens up their have changed their minds about building a new arena and move their.

I would like to see the franchise use the name the "Los Angeles Kings of Anaheim" to infuse confusion with the NHL team.  If they keep the Royal name, I think they should change their name to "Los Jugadors de Baloncesto Real", i.e.,  the Royal Basketball Players to acknowledge the Latino heritage of Los Angeles.

San Diego needs an NBA ready arena.  They can't even get their act together to build a new stadium for the Chargers.

I know it'll not likely but it'd be nice to have a NBA team back in San Diego.

Personally, I'd rather see them move to Las Vegas.  I'd rather be the only pro team in my market, than compete in the LA market against two other pro basketball franchises.  Especially if I owned the worst of the three teams.  Think of the name possibilities....the Vegas Rat Pack, or how about the Vegas Mobsters, or even the Vegas Pit Bosses?
