Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski blasts Jalen Rose over his comments made about the university. Posted by Ben Golliver. jalen-rose

Just when things had quieted down after weeks of outrage regarding comments made by former University of Michigan basketball player Jalen Rose about Duke University, Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski has stepped into the fray to prolong the back and forth.   In a documentary movie, Rose, a member of Michigan's famed Fab Five, referred to black Duke players as "Uncle Toms" and said that he felt the university didn't recruit inner city players.

ESPNChicago.com reports that Krzyzewski called those comments "very insulting" and "wrong" and went on to take shots back at the Fab Five's success at Michigan, questioning whether they left a legacy.
"We were very successful against them and, to be quite frank with you, we recruited Chris Webber," he said. "I didn't recruit Jalen Rose because we had Grant Hill and I'm happy with that. We didn't look at the other, Juwan Howard [because] we knew he wasn't going to come to Duke. The other two kids we didn't think were the caliber that could play as well as Thomas Hill and Brian Davis and Billy McCaffery. They're good kids. They were good kids."
"They had a heck of a run but, they didn't leave anything, they didn't establish anything there," Krzyzewski said. "The guys that I had established something that Jay Williams continued to do 10 years later -- the standards of what it meant to be a Duke basketball player."
Coach K has every right to be angry. Obviously, Rose's comments in the documentary were meant to reflect how he felt as a teenager, but whether they are past or present thoughts it's reasonable for Coach K to view them as an attack upon his integrity.

His response, though, leaves a lot to be desired. The digs at Rose and his teammates for not being good enough to be recruited by Duke were probably best left unsaid. Really, that pettiness is beneath Krzyzewski, who is a living legend and simply didn't need to make those personal statements to defend his program's general recruiting strategy or decisions. His record of success speaks for itself.

But Coach K really loses his way when he attempts to deny the Fab Five's legacy and impact -- "They didn't leave anything" -- by pointing to Michigan's basketball struggles. Rose and company clearly left a legacy that extended far outside the UM basketball program, one that continues to influence NBA players to this day. To not acknowledge that decades-long legacy's impact upon thousands (millions?) of young black men unintentionally makes Rose's greater point for him. Yes, Coach K helps us conclude, there was a divide between the world Rose lived in and the world Duke and its head coach occupy. And it apparently still exists.

Regarding Adolph Rupp, the SEC did not allow or have black players until 1967. The following year, Rupp signed Tom Payne, a black player. The Civil Rights Act did not pass until 1966. So if the SEC didn't allow black players, does that make Rupp a racist? No, a year after the SEC allowed black players, Rupp signed Tom Payne. If he was a racist, he could have chosen not to recruit a black player until he retired in 1972.

No, all "inner city" kids aren't thugs. But the overwhelming majority of thugs are from the "inner city." Look at it like this: All Muslims aren't terrorists. But the overwhelming majority of terrorists are Muslims. These are uncomfortable, hard truths, I know. Racist? Bigoted? Then reality is racist and bigoted.

Are you serious? If Coach K. is Adolph Rupp, as you seem to think, then Jalen Rose is Adolph Hitler in thinking that every black man has to "keep it real" by wearing his jeans jail style hangin' on his knees and using a language that makes ebonics look like The King's English ! Yo my nigga....ya feelin'me...my nigga ??

Hey badsnap....no apology needed. You hit the nail on the head by calling "truthteller" an idiot. Actually, calling him a idiot, is probably giving him a little too much credit. Need proof? Check out this blog he started this afternoon...

I love the ncaa basketball tourney and since the final four is here i look back at the recent  fab 5 documentary and ask why America cant just be honest. Coach k and duke program is really dukey when it comes to giving black kids not from private schools or rich families a chance to play ball and get a education from duke. I am not mad at Coach k or a adolp rupp for their ignorance in not opening the doors of opportunity to others at all. I call them as i see years of the same practice iver and over leaves a legacy. I also blame the doc rivers of the world aho send teir sons to such a enviorment. I know many rich and nba blacks marry white women and literaly turn their backs on the black community but hey doc is the type of uncle tom duke and coach k loves. I can count the dark-skinned ball players on one hand coach k has had. Duke should say to the black community send us your bi-racial not poor blacks only.. Wow every black or alost everyone on the roster now besides the freshman irving has a daddy from the nba who is rich and of course light-skin.. I respect that bigot adolph rupp more than adolp rupp lite aka coach k from dukie u.. It stanks and his methods stank to high heaven. He is aa fake as his hair is really black...

Much love to Jalen Rose..

Sorry, but I had to highlight that part again. I have read alot of crap on the internet before, but this guy takes the cake.

Hopefully he just did it to get a rise out of people. If he really believes that garbage, I feel sorry for his family and friends. That is, if he has any.

Coach K blasts Jalen Rose over Duke comments

How many teams have gone to the National Championship game two years in a row.
How many teams with five starters that were freshman made the National Championship game.

Call them chokers if you want because they blew it against North Carolina.
However, to say that they didn't do anything is crazy.
They were an entertaining show.
Yes they were classless, arrogant and acted like babies at times.
They could however play ball. If Duke that year started all freshman and the fab five had upperclassmen starters do you think things would have been different? The fab five never got it right, they never grew up and matured as a team.
They never had that chance since they only played 2 years together.

I think what they did the first year was amazing. Making all the way to the finals showed how talented they were.
Duke was just a better and more mature team. They had more talent and better coaching. So be it.
I don't think anyone would watch a two hour special on ESPN about that Duke team expect maybe Duke fans.
You dont' have to win the title to have a special season.
