Video of Los Angeles Lakers coach Matt Barnes throwing Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Terry Stotts to the ground. Posted by Ben Golliver.

We see a skirmish on an NBA court almost every day, but few end with an assistant coach being thrown down to the ground by an opposing player. That changed on Thursday night, when Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes threw Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Terry Stotts to the ground during a fourth quarter altercation.

The drama began with the Lakers leading 90-73 with 9:22 remaining in the game. Mavericks guard Jason Terry shoved Lakers guard Steve Blake to the court with two hands on a drive attempt. A big group shoving match erupted and, after plenty of jawing, Stotts wrapped his arms around Barnes near the Mavericks bench after NBA official Joey Crawford attempted to extricate Barnes from the fracas. Barnes took exception to Stotts' bear hug from behind, clearly yelling "Get off me!" multiple times as he tried to unwrap himself. When that failed, Barnes turned around and knocked Stotts to the ground. Barnes was then, obviously, ejected from the game.

A suspension from the league is almost sure to follow for Barnes.

Here's video of the exchange.

Actually, Barnes had already been ejected from the game.  He got ejected as soon as he shoved Terry.  He was heading back towards the Laker bench and the exit when the coach grabbed him from behind.  Not that it matters much, Barnes will get a 1 or 2 game suspension for shoving Terry (and maybe for "failing to leave the court in a timely fashion" although that was slightly impeded by the coach, trying to separate players, grabbing him from behind).

But Bizona, Fisher didn't throw an elbow at Kaman. He did nothing. That's why he wasn't suspended.

Right. He did "nothing." That's why he got a Flagrant 2 foul.

Correction: Lakers F Matt Barnes did nothing

Sorry, but Ben Golliver much be an idiot.  But then Reggie Miller got it wrong too.  Whether the coach should have been grabbing him like that (he shouldn't have) is not the point.  The coach tripped over the spectator on his own.  Barnes was just releasing the grabby coach's hands from his waist.  It's pretty obvious.  And Golliver is an idiot for not only reporting incorrectly what others got incorrect, but because he also states that Barnes was subsequently ejected.  Barnes was already tossed by Crawford before the coach grabbed him.  And for the record, Stotts wrapped him up because Haywood was coming over.  The announcers couldn't figure it out, but pretty sure that was what got Haywood tossed when he otherwise didn't seem involved enough to get ejected.  Pretty dumb move by Stotts, and he's the one who should pay any medical bills for the spectator, which being courtside in LA might be fairly costly.

I didn't see any throw down. It looked like the guy tripped over something. Either way therre is no reason for him to be grabbing the player. The coach needed to be put in his place. I hate the Lakers but I hate the terrible hype reporting even more.

ummmm

Why was the idiot Mavericks assistant hugging him for in the first place?  Barnes isn't one of his players, thus he had every right to push the guy off his back. And he did warn him verbally first...twice...

Jitpring, you're the same one who earlier this week said Fisher didn't throw his elbow at Chris Kaman. What homer.
