LeBron James' mother Gloria James arrested on South Beach.

Update: 5:27 p.m.:  Here's a little reaction more from James in an ESPN.com video

"I think it's a sensitive subject. It's a personal matter and it's been taken care of ... She's fine ... She's fine. You have to move forward. It is my life, things you have to deal with, like I said, I try not to let it be a distraction. I have a job to do."

Update 2:10 p.m.: James spoke to reporters this morning on the subject.
"It's a sensitive subject. It's a personal matter that's being taken care of. She's fine."
Update 2:03 p.m.: Marcel Mutoni of SLAM and Bruce Arthur of the National Post  share this detail from the police report: LeBron sent a team executive , head of the Miami Heat charitable fund to pick up Gloria James from jail. That could have been Heat PR's call, to try and avoid the scene of LeBron or one of his associates picking his mother up from jail. This doesn't play well, either, however. The whole situation is painful and embarrassing and being played out in public.

Update 12:50 p.m.: A police report filed says that James was arrested under the influence of alcohol, and that the charge stemmed from her slapping a valet. Then later she became hostile with the cops. . From TMZ:
The cop says the valet explained that he retrieved James' car and put it on the valet ramp in front of the hotel while Gloria and a female driver stood around talking to people for 30 minutes. Finally, the valet says he turned the car off.

The valet says (Gloria James) then approached him and stated, "Where are my (expletive) keys(?)" and continued yelling profanities at the victim."

The report explains, "Then for no apparent reason the arrestee struck the victim with an open had [sic] across the right side of his face and in the process causing herself to lose her balance and falling to the ground."

After (Gloria James) was transported to a nearby police station, the report continues, a shift commander -- Lt. Acosta -- tried to speak with James who responded, "I'm trying to trust you but I don't trust your kind ... I don't trust that officer who arrested me."

As you can see from the comments below, mankind is reacting to this story with the usual amount of restraint and caution of judgment it usually does.

Original report:  When LeBron James packed up and headed down to Miami (while keeping his home in Akron), he talked a lot about what was best for his family. This is probably not what he meant. LeBron's mother Gloria was reportedly arrested last night at the Fontainebleau resort on Miami Beach for misdemeanor assault. No other details are available, we'll keep you posted right here.

This isn't the first time James' mother has had trouble. She was last arrested on a DUI charge in 2006, and James famously had to tell his mother to sit down and stop yelling during a game. She's been at the center of a lot of controversy for James, and this probably won't help matters. But James continues to stick by her, because she's all the family he's got outside of his long-time girlfriend and his two sons.

James has clearly done what he can to try and provide her with a stable life to avoid situations like this. With the Heat dropping a key game in the playoff race to the Bucks Wednesday night, James can't afford to have these kind of distractions, with just a little over a week before playoffs begin.

Can you imagine if this had been Kirk Hinrichs mom, itd be on every channel all day and ESPN would probably make a weekend out of it

You can take the woman out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the woman.

This is not the first or the last time Ms. James has been in trouble with the law.  A situation like this back home in Akron most likely would have been taken care of but not in Miami.  She has an alcohol problem that needs attended to and family support but she is either not getting it or does not want it.  Until then situations like this will reoccur and Ms. James will receive progressive discipline from the courts and potential law suits from those that are affected.

My point exactly. Thought you were colored (now how is that for racism?). The black community needs to come together and trust police. Here in Cleveland I know a number of Firemen & Police. Firemen will not go into a burning house in the 'the hood' because of guns, stored and guns being fired at them! They'd just watch it burn to the ground. Shameful honestly. Not their fault. Waiting for the cops. Trust the cops. The reason the Police are pi$$ed off is because you peeps (in the hood) are being complete douchebags. Grow up!

reedtaz:  I think you are missing the point on this one.  What I view the posts as are people fed up with the double standard of whites always being accused of being racists.  How about putting this one on James' shoulders!  She is the one that slapped the working class guy in the face and then told the non-black cop "I don't trust your kind."  If her actions are proved to be truthful, I hope this valet sues her and takes some of her money.  By the way, Obama and his lack of transparency has done more damage to race relations in America then the five Presidents before him.  Lets all hope it is one and done for BO.

Were the officers white? Racism works both ways pal. And why the black community can't trust police is beyond me? That thought process is why there is so much angst in 'the hood'. Grow up! Accept your punishment and get over it. you up. Sorry.

I had maybe 3 paragraphs of material I was going to use after reading some of these idiotic and boarderline racist comments. I wont feed into the monster that has hindered the development of the free country tho. I'm seeing it more and more these days of posters with views that would make the grandmaster of the KKK proud. What she said was ignorant but why follow her with the same ignorance. A nation of followers is what we have become.
I thought when the majority of the nation picked President Obama to be the face of america, things would change for the better. It's actually worse than before.

James was right when, in his commercial, he says he's not a role model. He says it because he never HAD one. At least he took to basketball and not drinking. The sense of entitlement these "Mom's" have is pathetic, seeing how before their "Son's" were ever drafted, the majority of them came from nothing. Point is, Mrs James & "KING", don't forget where you CAME from.
