The NBA investigating hard fouls by Indiana Pacers forward Jeff Foster and upgraded them to flagrants. Posted by Matt Moore and Ben Golliver

Update: The NBA has retroactively assessed Indiana Pacers forward Jeff Foster with two flagrant 1 fouls according to ESPN.com.
The NBA upgraded two hits Indiana Pacers center Jeff Foster leveled against the Chicago Bulls during Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series on Thursday, making them both flagrant 1 fouls.
Flagrant 1 fouls are less serious than Flagrant 2 fouls and the ruling will not require Foster to sit out Game 4.

Original Post: Jeff Foster nailed Derrick Rose with an elbow in Game 3 between the Pacers and Bulls Thursday night, and ESPN reports the league is investigating the collision to see if further punishment is necessary.
The NBA is reviewing two hits Indiana Pacers center Jeff Foster leveled against the Chicago Bulls during Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series on Thursday, according to a league spokesman. "Whatever they want to do," Foster said with a shrug as he walked to the locker room Friday afternoon. He was unaware of the league review.

The foul was clearly intentional. Wouldn't you intentionally foul Rose at some point if he was continuously slicing past your defense with no regard for anything? But the problem with the foul was the contact of Foster's elbow into Rose's face. And that wasn't clearly intentional. It's apparent Foster was aiming to make contact with his elbow to Rose, but it's not certain that Foster was trying to hit Rose in the face.

So Foster probably will recieve some sort of punishment, based on how little of a play on the ball he made, and even had he missed the head, he would have clotheslined Rose. The biggest reason he'll get tagged, though? It's a superstar in a major market. Not all hard playoff fouls are created equal and the call to protect the presumptive MVP will be considerably greater than it will be for other players.

The league is also taking a look at a foul from Foster on Luol Deng in the same quarter. Popular guy, Jeff.

One thing you can count on? There will be other, harder fouls than this in the playoffs that won't receive as much fan or league attention.

They assessed the wrong guy with the flagrant. It should have been Tyler Hansborough. He puts up both elbows to Rose's face. I don't think Derrick realized it was Tyler who made the hard contact and he immediately went vocal with Foster. Kinda wished the league let it go instead of assessing the wrong man.

NBA hits Jeff Foster with 2 flagrant fouls

I don't see the flagrant foul here. Sure, Foster doesn't look like he's going for the ball as much as he is just impeding Rose, but this isn't hard enough for the league to go back and change it. The NBA is really looking after it's budding superstar in Rose, and anyone who has been watching the calls in this first round series objectively can tell you that.

PartialObserver, you are just that! Other people on here have told you what a dope you are so I will not go any further with that. If you had been watching the calls in this series there should have been at least 10 more fouls called on Pacer players against Derrick Rose.  That is a understatement I'm sure.  What is real funny is that as hard as the Pacers have played and fouled they are still going down in 4 games against the Bulls. What the Pacers should do in game 4 is try to actually play basketball and see what happens.  They will lose but they might gain a little respect with the rest of the NBA and the fans that watch it.  They might learn a thing or two for next year on top of it.  Playing Bad Boys basketball with not a ton of talent does not make your team better.  it just makes you a bunch of thugs!
Actually PartialObserver has it right. There's nothing remarkable about this play except the person getting fouled. I don't think anyone who isn't merely interested in trash-talking fails to respect how the Pacers have played in this series, certainly not the players or media following the games. Considering this series is the first playoff experience for a lot of their players, many of whom, such as George, Hansbrough, Price, Hibbert and  Collison are only in their first couple of seasons in the league, they are learning a lot about how physical they need to be to win in the playoffs. Chicago is going to win the series, there was never any doubt about it, but I'll bet the team and their coach are more than a little concerned abot the rest of the Eastern Conference. They are barely managing to stay witha 37-45 team, never leading by more than 7 points in 3 games; what happens when they play a good team?

NBA hits Jeff Foster with 2 flagrant fouls

The Pacers could have easily won these first three games, all the Sports Radio shows and ESPN etc. have interviewed former and current players and coaches and they are raving at the way the Pacers have played against the team with the best record in the league.Larry Bird said three years ago the goal was to take this team and make  the playoffs, they accomplished that feat and now if they can manage to draft a closer or get one in a trade or free agency they might be a team to contend within the future.Let's face it...did anyone really think the Pacers would win this series let alone be competetive? They have played well and it has probably been the best games to watch thus far in the playoffs.

NBA hits Jeff Foster with 2 flagrant fouls

The NBA is becoming more and more whimpy.  Hard play and hard fouls are part of the playoffs.  Players seem to toughen up just find so why doesn't the league take their skirt off and let the play get more intense.

NBA hits Jeff Foster with 2 flagrant fouls

Excuse me "Partial Observer"????

You must have been "partially" watching these games, or maybe "partially" using your brain, I'm guessing the latter....
A foul is a foul in the NBA, unless you foul a player with no regard to where the ball is, i.e..... and let me explain this in detail....if you don't try to block the shot and your purpose is to give a hard foul and the offensive player is put in a dangerous situation, then it is a flagrant foul 1. Blatent disregard for player safety is a flagrant foul 2, which means a one game suspension, see "Dwight Howard" if you would like more information......

There is no secret Indiana wants to make Rose"s drives hurt, which is fine in playoff basketball, but do us all a favor and GO FOR THE BALL!!! Foster is nothing but a 6 foul thugster who happens to hit a jumper every now and again. Hansborough is the same, only he hits more jumpers....big slow white dudes cannot guard Derrick Rose, and trust me, I am a big slow white dude....

So, Indiana, stop with the cheap shots, it's not your fault you got swept....I mean 37 wins sure is a lot in an NBA season.....oh wait, there is one more foulfest left before you are swept.....ah the joys of watching a mugging live on TV tomorrow, I can't wait.....don't worry though, you always have Peyton....if there is an NFL season that is......
