Jason Richardson and Zaza Pachulia suspended for Game 4 Sunday in Hawks-Magic series.

The NBA Saturday suspended both Jason Richardson and Zaza Pachulia for Game 4 of the Hawks-Magic playoff series Sunday in Atlanta. In the fourth quarter of Game 3, Pachulia became entangled with Dwight Howard, and swung an elbow to get him off. Richardson took umbrage, Pachulia then got into Richardson faced and headbutted him (slightly), drawing the suspension. Richardson then shoved Pachulia in the face, which is why he'll be missing Game 4's festivities. Good times all around. Here's video.

Pachulia's impact would seem to be the lesser, as he's a bench player with little offensive skill, and with the Hawks' depth at center. But as Kevin Pelton as Basketball Prospectus notes, Pachulia's impact overall may be greater.
The last two games, the Hawks have been more effective with Pachulia in the middle. During his 26 minutes of action on Friday, Atlanta was +7. Without Pachulia, Larry Drew will be forced to choose between putting Horford back at center and risking foul trouble or running out the sorry group of backup big men (Hilton Armstrong, Josh Powell and Etan Thomas) that Howard abused in Game One.

Richardson is the Magic's best perimeter scorer outside of Jameer Nelson, but along with the rest of the Magic, he's struggled in this series.  He's shooting 27 percent from 3-point range in this series, and that's been particularly harmful to the Magic's offense. Without him, Quentin Richardson will likely get more time, and he's played well in the first three games for Orlando. This could be a blessing in disguise for the Magic if it lights a fire under the Mgic's perimeter offense.

Pachulia is the person you can most easily point to to disprove the "soft Euro" theory. Three years ago, he got into it with Kevin Garnett, and he's been known to start conflict with anyone who wants it. He's representative of the Hawks in this series. Willing to battle with anyone from the Magic who are looking for a fight.

Pachulia, Richardson suspended for Game 4

LOL it's funny how everyone sees it from a different angle. Some say it's Zaza who started it by going after Howard then bullying through J-Rich. Others see it as Zaza defending himself and getting mad after a cheap shot Dwight Howard elbow and J-Rich jumping in Zaza's face.

Personally, I feel both the Hawks and Magic will suffer from this. Richardson is a starter fro the Magic and a quality scorer/defender for them. Zaza is one of the two key big men that can limit Howard in the paint (the other being Jason Collins, who is slightly injured) and most likely the suspension will hurt the Hawks a little more if Howard goes off today. With Richardson gone, look for Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford to exploit the Magic guards and have 15-25 each this game.

Pachulia, Richardson suspended for Game 4

Kinda like Shaq was til Barkley threw him down.   Shaq was a better man / player after that.  Howard is at the top now, he gets fouled all the time but the elbows have to stop.  He doesn't need it

Pachulia, Richardson suspended for Game 4

I only hope Pachulia's motive wasn't simply to stir the pot and create some kind of altercation in which a key player gets ejected

No, rather, something was said that he didn't like (and it wouldn't have mattered who said it), and he took offense.  These players aren't smart enough to think of doing what you've said; they just react.

BTW, a player doesn't need to "stand up for a teammate."  That kind of crap (what third-graders do, btw) is far too rampant in this league of immaturity.  Real men have perspective and realize keeping cool = no suspensions = no loss to the team = respect from the fans.

Pachulia, Richardson suspended for Game 4

Helloooo, Dwight got a technical foul. First of all, Dwight Howard deserves to take that shot at Zaza after all the abuse he takes. If the NBA refs actually called the game fairly, Dwight would be at the line basically every play. Also, Dwight could absolutely destroy anyone, so you should be glad that he doesn't react physically. Don't be made because Dwight is the best center in the league, and Zaza is not even a basketball player at all. Zaza is just a guy who's there to hack Dwight; he has no skill at all.

Brilliant idea.  Go after a bench player and get yourself a suspension.  As if the NBA needs more reasons to go after Howard for no reason.  Play like this is exactly why the NHL used to employ goons.  Orlando should send in one of those guys getting zero minutes and clean house for them.

Lame suspension given to J-Rich.  He was just standing up for his teammate and star player who just had an elbow thrown at him, and then to make matters worse, Pachulia head butts Richardson.  It seems to me this hurts the Majic a lot worse then it hurts the Hawks: the Majic lose a key player, while the Hawks lose a hack.  I saw the replay, and aside from the shove and being restrained by another teammate, it didn't look like Richardson did all that much.  I only hope Pachulia's motive wasn't simply to stir the pot and create some kind of altercation in which a key player gets ejected.  If that is the case, the Hawks get rewarded for chippy play.

Funny how Dwight Howard gets away scot-free after taking a shot at Pachulia's chops after a hard (but clean) foul. Has Dwight Coward EVER confronted some one physically while looking them in the eye? What a bitch.
