Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson says All-Star guard Kobe Bryant is still suffering from a sprained ankle. Posted by Ben Golliver.

Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant turned his ankle in Game 4 of Los Angeles' first round series with the New Orleans Hornets. Even though he was able to play in Games 5 and 6 -- scoring 19 points and 24 points in the back-to-back wins -- Lakers coach Phil Jackson told the Los Angeles Times that the ankle will still be an issue heading into the team's second round series with the Dallas Mavericks. Game 1 against Dallas is set for Monday.
"It still affects him a lot," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said of Bryant, who sat out of Saturday's practice. "This is not going to go away anytime soon so we're just going to have to be close to what he's doing and monitor it a lot. He'll have a limited amount of practice time and it's something he'll have to do."
""It's tender to the touch still," Jackson said of Bryant. "He's still limping when he walks. It's a limied amount of improvement."
Bryant, for his part, maintains that he is "fine".

The good news for Bryant and the Lakers is that the Mavericks do not have a dynamic, athletic presence in their starting backcourt. Jason Kidd and DeShawn Stevenson just aren't the type of players who can regularly exploit Bryant in his limited capacity by beating him off the dribble or pushing the tempo hard.

If there is a concern, it will likely be Mavericks reserve guard Jason Terry, who is significantly shorter than Bryant and quick off the dribble. Terry is an all-around offensive threat and will continue to serve as Dallas' closer. He will represent a tough cover for either Bryant or veteran point guard Derek Fisher

Here's video of Bryant's injury.

Phil Jackson: Kobe Bryant's ankle still an issue

Kobe is the biggest drama queen I've ever seen. The majority of players are playing through injuries but you rarely hear anything about it because they're not dramatic like Kobe. He makes every little injury very public so it covers up when he has bad shooting nights. He has done this all year long. Shut up an play! Stop fueling the media to cover your @$$.

I don't know how anyone could question Kobe's mental or physical toughness.I've never heard him make any excuses in any situation.I'm a die-hard MAVS LOVER,but their is no question Kobe is the BEST player in the world, and I think the greatest ever. Win or lose,my brain says the Lake show in 5.I do know this, regardless the outcome, the Mamba won't be crying or celebrating. It's all about the Golden ball to this dude.

the Kobester is already planting the seeds to explain how the Lakers were beaten in the playoffs

how is telling the media his ankle is "fine" planting a seed?

I see you've already been called a number of adequate names (I think I saw the word doucebag a time or two) so I'll just leave my comment at that.

When has he ever blamed his postseason losses on injury??..Huh douchebag???...Since you can mouth off and say he has "the same injuries as half the league", then I say tell us all when he has made excuses....Huh douchebag???...Anything...Kobe the Phoney???...Good one...And what are you???...A douchebag idiot that hates on great players. Kobe is amazing...Best player of this generation...And you're just a sore loser douchebag that is obvously jealous of Kobe's HALL OF FAME accomplishments. Enough said. Douchebag.

dk13beso: Apparently you either didn't witness his injury or have never rolled an ankle yourself.  If half the NBA had swelled-up ankles, that half would not be playing.  Kobe is one of the toughest guys in the Association and claiming that he is using his injury as a preliminary excuse shows your ignorance regarding the subject.

Laker fans are used to this.  Kobe has been playing through injury the past two seasons.  Thats what warrior mentality is all about.  KB24 would play if he had a compound fracture of the femur.  There is no quit (ala Legina) in the Black Mamba.

Kobe the Phoney. He's getting the reputation around the league as a dude that if things go wrong, he can point to an injury that half the NBA has. The clown has always wanted to be compared to MJ, but Bryant just doesn't measure up. I realize that the NBA in 2011 is vastly different to the Bulls' years of dominance but the Kobester is already planting the seeds to explain how the Lakers were beaten in the playoffs.

Oklahoma City and Westbrook will be a much bigger concern than the Dallas for Kobe.  We already know he can score against better defenders (Ariza) than Stevenson and Kidd, so defense is the only issue in this series.  Besides, the key in this series will not be Kobe, it will be Andrew, Pau and Lamar.  If the bigs show up, Dallas does not have an answer.
