Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Charles Barkley says that every NBA player has played with gay teammates. Posted by Ben Golliver. charles-barkley

On Sunday, we noted that Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts revealed to the New York Times that he is a homosexual, becoming the first prominent male professional sports team executive to do so.

In the article, Welts stated: "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits. Nobody’s comfortable in engaging in a conversation.”

One person who is comfortable engaging in every conversation is TNT broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The Washington Post reports that Barkley says that he played alongside gay players and that he believes the NBA is more ready for a current player to follow Welts' lead and come out than most people think.
“First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

“Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot,” Barkley said. “I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person."

Also weary of the perception that a majority of straight male athletes are intensely homophobic, Barkley said gay players pose no problem, adding, “Man, we need to outlaw guys who suck at sports.”
Although delivered unconventionally as always, Barkley's point stands. Talent is always going to be the most important determining factor in a highly competitive field like professional sports. That homosexual players have, to this point, chosen the lesser of two evils by remaining anonymous makes sense. That's how it's always been.

But does it feel like we're turning a corner here? Barkley's honesty is important and the support shown to Welts by other media members, including Bill Simmons, helps frame his decision to come forward as an important milestone on a longer path towards acknowledged, public equality.

Does public support for Welts and honest conversation about the life he was living make it easier for a current player to step forward? One would think so.

Ummmm, what?!?!  The "lesser of two evils?" What exactly is the greater of these evils?!?!?!?!  Why is coming out evil????  Who even wrote this article - there's not a name attached to it?!?!?!

@DKH...let's be rational, please. I don't care if we don't share the same beliefs, but your own are of question as well, so don't preach what.

First of all, religious fables or tales? If you've ever done any look into archaeology and history, there's evident proof that things listed in the Bible keep appearing as we discover more and more. The reason that people believe this (I'd like to say educated, but the vast majority don't understand) because that history shows that this has been an evident truth for the past 5,000 years. We don't have visible or bibliographical proof of anything from the current worldview of naturalism or evolution. That's called "blind faith" more than following something we've been able to pinpoint for a larger amount of time.

Anything I can quote from the Bible you can quote its contradiction from within the same book? Show me a link, show me a list, I want to see your magnificent works of switching words and deleting phrases. I've done enough research to warrant that claim false. There's a few CONTROVERSIAL phrases (and I say this because there is something called doctrine- different beliefs on facts), but nothing that has to do with ALL phrases from the Bible unless you distort the text, or use sentences from a completely unrelated story to "contradict".

If we were all as blind as me and didn't want to discover one of the most compelling storylines of human history, then we would all be focusing on things that did not matter as much to us. It definitely warrants our attention.

And did I mention that the belief that we came from dripping rocks an upteenth million years ago, evolved from fish, moved onto land, grew into primativie species and continually got BETTER has been and continues to be proven to be a falsehood? Nothing you see can generate its own positive, lasting parts. We cannot create, we can only add or destroy. You're going to absolutely come back and peg me on this one, but here's what it is- nothing is EVOLVING, everything is being DISCOVERED in a more quick fashion, thanks to a larger multitude of people. And no, a large amount of people is not better. In 100 years, our world's oil supply will be depleted. In 150 years, we could be so overpopulated that the pollution and smog that it would take to manage the people in the world at that point would be so overbearing that there'd be a mass pollution-induced holocaust. How is this world gaining? More things are being discovered, yes, but that isn't evolution...more things being discovered leads to exploitations of the discovered subjects, and that exploitation WEAKENS whatever subject was used, thus causing less and less of what's in this world to be available to us.

Science is about discovery and exploitation. It is NOT about creation and evolution. And I didn't say either of those in a religious format, yet both came up. Ironic, huh?

So to make that clear, don't go off claiming you know everything before you sit and consider the opinions of logical people who have actually looked into this matter for themselves.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Barkley is awesome. Whether one agrees or not, he was straight up (I did not intend on the pun) about the issues on sports. Talent is talent. Idiots abound no matter what race, gender or preference. However, it will take a good athlete to make the leap...a bench player will take heat if he is gay...just how it is.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

"there are fewer and fewer of you each day."

I wonder if the unbelieving world realizes that a great apostasy was predicted in Scripture.

Rev. 17 1-6
1Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk." 3And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. 4The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. 5And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: "Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations." 6And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

For the record, this prophesy doesn't end well for the unbelievers of the world.  The Church will be raptured before God really lets it all go to Hell.  So, in the end, this will end with God's redeemed being saved and the unbelieving world burning forever.  You seem to take great joy in the direction that history is pointing.  I'm not saying predicting that Christ's return has come, but at the same time... the fact that you are taking great joy in the damnation of so many is rather disturbing.

Ah, Jitpring, your world is crumbling, is it not? It gets worse and worse each day, exemplified by these events, and hastened by the very medium you attempt to use to convey your outdated bigoted beliefs.  I for one welcome the new rationalism.  It based on truth, not lies and obfuscation - the foundation and pillar of your lost dogma.  Get used to it my friend, there are fewer and fewer of you each day.
