Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Charles Barkley says that every NBA player has played with gay teammates. Posted by Ben Golliver. charles-barkley

On Sunday, we noted that Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts revealed to the New York Times that he is a homosexual, becoming the first prominent male professional sports team executive to do so.

In the article, Welts stated: "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits. Nobody’s comfortable in engaging in a conversation.”

One person who is comfortable engaging in every conversation is TNT broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The Washington Post reports that Barkley says that he played alongside gay players and that he believes the NBA is more ready for a current player to follow Welts' lead and come out than most people think.
“First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

“Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot,” Barkley said. “I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person."

Also weary of the perception that a majority of straight male athletes are intensely homophobic, Barkley said gay players pose no problem, adding, “Man, we need to outlaw guys who suck at sports.”
Although delivered unconventionally as always, Barkley's point stands. Talent is always going to be the most important determining factor in a highly competitive field like professional sports. That homosexual players have, to this point, chosen the lesser of two evils by remaining anonymous makes sense. That's how it's always been.

But does it feel like we're turning a corner here? Barkley's honesty is important and the support shown to Welts by other media members, including Bill Simmons, helps frame his decision to come forward as an important milestone on a longer path towards acknowledged, public equality.

Does public support for Welts and honest conversation about the life he was living make it easier for a current player to step forward? One would think so.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

C'mon Anon Order, Good observations, but you're making a bitch fight b/n Okajura and HotCArl into a scholarly pursuit. Sort of like how George Will destroys baseball.

My God!  Is everyone going along with this to keep their jobs, or is the NBA REALLY that tolerant of gay people??? In a time when the sport looks like the biggest croc in the modern era of sports, they don't need this.  They could really lose alot of fans, especially with a potential lockout on the way!

2. Has there ever been a civilization that has grown and flourished with all homosexuals? Ever?? In the history of time??? It can not happen. Can you name any civilization that has flourished without homosexuals, since they comprise roughly 5% of any given population?
I don't know where you are getting your "facts", but homosexuals make up a mere 1%-2% of the population.  Whether thay make up 2% or 5% is debatable, but a fact that is NOT debatable is that they make up 64% od syphilis cases in this country.  In 2007 the  reported the frequency of  use is twenty times greater among homosexuals than in the general population.  Homosexuals men have a life expectancy that is far less than that of their hetero counterparts.  A survey by The Advocate, a homosexual magazine, revealed that promiscuity is a reality among homosexuals. The poll found that 20 percent of homosexuals said they had had 51-300 different sex partners in their lifetime, with an additional 8 percent having had more than 300.

Unprotected homosexual sex is also a concern among health professionals. A survey in Ireland by the Gay Men's Health Project found that almost half of homosexuals said they were having unprotected sex....

Homosexuality is a CANCER to society.  It's not something to be proud of, or to celebrate. Trying to change state laws changed to recognize gay marriage is a travesty, and society as a whole has absolutely NOTHING to gain from doing so.

The public schools actually did me a great service by helping me to easily identify close-minded bigots like you
Someone that dissapproves of homosexuality is not a "bigot".  Sexual preference is not a race or religion.  Being a homsexual does not qualify you for any additional civil rights.  Homsexuals cannot be discriminated against in the workplace.  They cannot be denied housing based on their sexuality.  Gay people have been well tolerated and their lifestyle is inexplicably accepted by mainstream America.  But they are not satisfied,  they want to encroach on the family.  They want to play house.  They want to emmulate customs and traditions that were established by people that find their behavior abhorant and unnaceptable.

Also, there is a thing called in vitro fertilaization which allows same-sex parents to have have children in the same manner that genetically challenged straight couples do. Perhaps you've heard of it
The last time I checked, you need to have EGGS that are surgically removed from the (FEMALE) Mother, and exposed to a MAN'S semen in a petri dish.  So TWO Gay Men cannot conceive a child this way.  Besides, why would anyone want to subject a child to a freakish, perverted world where disease, promiscity, abuse, and addiction, are prevelant at rates amny times that of heterosexual perents?

Homosexuality, on the other hand, is no more inherently destructive than heterosexuality.
The life expectancy of a Gay man is the United States is FORTY-THREE years.  That is thirty-five years less than straight men in America.  Nearly HALF of gay and bisexual men currently age 20 years will not reach their 65th birthday.

Therefore - It must be somewhat more destructive than heterosexuality - Right?  Wake up and get you head out of your a** -
Homosexuality is a major flaw.  Smoking shortens one's life expectancy by 7-10 years.  Homosexuality shortens life expectancy by 20-30 years.  Here's a behavior that's killing people 2 to 3 times the rate of smoking, yet nobody seems to care. In fact, we are encouraging and affirming individuals into the "gay" lifestyle.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Ok folks lets raise the standards. Let review Okajura vs HotCarl and please try to take your personal opinions out of this and review the tit for tat Okajura's counter to HotCarl's statement.

Scoring Okajura vs HotCarl

1. HotCarl wins.
Okajura plays let me not address the real question and play some other cards. HotCarl I feel is attempting to create an argument of natural order which Okajura carefully avoids.

2. Okajura wins.
Okajura easily shows the flaws in HotCarl's broad usage of the term "grown and flourished".

3. HotCarl wins.
You can safely assume that HotCarl, although not stated implicitly, holds anal sex as unhealthy. Okajura does not counter that it is which if he had the information to do so he could have easily countered. So it is assumable that he does not.

4. HotCarl wins.
Okajura n<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;">ever answers the question is the disease of alcoholism normal. It is easily answered. Unfortunately Okajura seems more intent on bashing HotCarl then actually answering his question and then turning it on him.

5.  HotCarl wins.
Ok no matter your opinions on public education Okajura never did counter his statement. He only gave public education provided him with one great service. Never did he counter that public education failed everyone on a whole in matters of evaluating the impact of homosexuality on the community. It does not matter that HotCarl possesses a broad sweeping statement but HotCarl once again so intent on bashing does not counter the statement. In a debate if you do not disprove the statement you lose.

To me, there is a huge difference about jokingly referencing your own sexual preference like Charles did, than there is with calling someone a fa@@ot. I'm surprised that scholars such as yourselves aren't seeing that.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

So, is the NBA turning gay?  I seem to recall not too long ago when Charles Barkley made comments on the air about how some guy could look at Beyonce and still prefer Brokeback Mountain.  Back then, Charles got some laughs.  Today, if a current NBA player said the same thing, he'd be paying a very hefty fine.  What's next?  Will David Stern insist that men kiss other men on the lips on camera, or face a suspension?

Knowing Barkely Im sure he would not like to have a gay teammate.

You take showers and walk naked in the locker rooms. I wouldnt want to be the inspiration for this guy to whack one off.

hotcarl: "Okakura,

HAHA! nice weak ass reply. You know you just got owned."

"You just got owned." What are you, twelve? It's embarassing enough to hear someone say that out loud, but to put it in print? Wow...

Everyone who has read your posts on this subject realize that (A) you are a proud owner of a sub-100 IQ, and; (B) you have some personal sexual hangups that you like to project onto others.

Good luck with both of those issues, pal. And best of luck finishing your G.E.D.
