Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Charles Barkley says that every NBA player has played with gay teammates. Posted by Ben Golliver. charles-barkley

On Sunday, we noted that Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts revealed to the New York Times that he is a homosexual, becoming the first prominent male professional sports team executive to do so.

In the article, Welts stated: "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits. Nobody’s comfortable in engaging in a conversation.”

One person who is comfortable engaging in every conversation is TNT broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The Washington Post reports that Barkley says that he played alongside gay players and that he believes the NBA is more ready for a current player to follow Welts' lead and come out than most people think.
“First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

“Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot,” Barkley said. “I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person."

Also weary of the perception that a majority of straight male athletes are intensely homophobic, Barkley said gay players pose no problem, adding, “Man, we need to outlaw guys who suck at sports.”
Although delivered unconventionally as always, Barkley's point stands. Talent is always going to be the most important determining factor in a highly competitive field like professional sports. That homosexual players have, to this point, chosen the lesser of two evils by remaining anonymous makes sense. That's how it's always been.

But does it feel like we're turning a corner here? Barkley's honesty is important and the support shown to Welts by other media members, including Bill Simmons, helps frame his decision to come forward as an important milestone on a longer path towards acknowledged, public equality.

Does public support for Welts and honest conversation about the life he was living make it easier for a current player to step forward? One would think so.

When's the last time a straight man came out & called a press conference just to say he bangs girls?  Exactly.
Didn't Aikman and Piazza "declare" their heterosexuality?

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Charles Barkley is awesome.  This reminds me of his comment about the controversy surrounding Magic Johnson playing in the All-Star game after he tested postive for AIDS: "We're not out there to have unprotected sex with him, we're going to play basketball."

Right on the money, as usual.  Another Charles Barkley quote: "I don't create controversy: it's already out there way before I open my mouth."

@ZachDro... so YOU'VE done YOUR research so it must be true?  Oh brother.

They have proven biblical stories to be factual? Really? When? Where?

They've proven that the actual scripture was written long ago - and that is it. Manmade stories, nothing else.

I have no problem with people like you believing it, I simply get annoyed when your pious reach condemns anyone that doesn’t go along with it.

The Shroud of Turin has been proven a fake – it’s from the 13th century as is the origin of the story.

Where is noah's ark? Where is jesus's physcial body?  Where is this holy grail?  Why have people videotaped about a gazillion supposed UFO sightings but not one angel?  How did jonah get swallowed by a whale - AND LIVE?  How is it that methuselah was supposed to have lived for 800 or 900 years - and Moses for more than 120? Why did the catholic church later omit more than 20 books from the original bible - one in which people (and jesus) are actually flying? For that matter, why did the catholic church demonize scientists for centuries when their declarations and facts disproved biblical teachings?

I dare ask you... How long did Moses wander in the wilderness...? FORTY years. How many days was noah supposed to have traveled in his ark...? FORTY days and FORTY nights. How long did goliath challenge the Israelites after his defeat by david...? twice a day for FORTY days. How long did jesus fast...? FORTY days. How old was muhammed when he was supposed to have been summoned by g-d...? FORTY years old. How many days transpired before jesus's supposed resurrection...? FORTY days. And just for fun, how many accompanying thieves did Alibaba have with him...? FORTY.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the number "forty" is simply a blanket term for "a lot" for the languages of that day and the region and yet you and your ilk treat it as daily or annual facts.

These are just stories. Believe them all you want, just don't judge me or others because we choose to believe in logic and facts.  Of course, we all know the real answer... you HAVE TO try and convince others of your beliefs just so you can try and come to grip with their flawed factual data and conclusions accordingly.  Now who really has the problem?

PS - Your whole Adam and Eve made all of the people 6000 years ago routine is horribly scientifically flawed as well and I'm not even talking about those funny little dinosaurs.  The pitfalls of inbreeding are well documented from the royal families in Europe to the fact that EVERY State in this country says that due to birth defects you CANNOT marry or have children with someone as close or closer than a 1st cousin.  Are you writing your state representative right now to get that law revoked?  Not hardly.

Athiests are gay!!

That's the right question.

I never chose to like girls.  One day I ...ummm.... "noticed" how much a girl in English class had developed.  No above-belt thought required.

People need to worry about their own lives and how they are meeting their own standards of morality rather than worrying about how someone else is living there life. Clean up your own backyard. That in itself will take a lifetime.
