Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Charles Barkley says that every NBA player has played with gay teammates. Posted by Ben Golliver. charles-barkley

On Sunday, we noted that Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts revealed to the New York Times that he is a homosexual, becoming the first prominent male professional sports team executive to do so.

In the article, Welts stated: "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits. Nobody’s comfortable in engaging in a conversation.”

One person who is comfortable engaging in every conversation is TNT broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The Washington Post reports that Barkley says that he played alongside gay players and that he believes the NBA is more ready for a current player to follow Welts' lead and come out than most people think.
“First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

“Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot,” Barkley said. “I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person."

Also weary of the perception that a majority of straight male athletes are intensely homophobic, Barkley said gay players pose no problem, adding, “Man, we need to outlaw guys who suck at sports.”
Although delivered unconventionally as always, Barkley's point stands. Talent is always going to be the most important determining factor in a highly competitive field like professional sports. That homosexual players have, to this point, chosen the lesser of two evils by remaining anonymous makes sense. That's how it's always been.

But does it feel like we're turning a corner here? Barkley's honesty is important and the support shown to Welts by other media members, including Bill Simmons, helps frame his decision to come forward as an important milestone on a longer path towards acknowledged, public equality.

Does public support for Welts and honest conversation about the life he was living make it easier for a current player to step forward? One would think so.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

Good for Barkley speaking out and making a more comfortable atmosphere. Dabigchill, you're entitled to your opinion but discriminating a person based on their sexual preference is the same as discriminating based on race or as you say, homosexuality is a choice, then based on someones favorite ice cream. I'll play football, basketball, or any sport with a gay person, a japanese person, a spaghetti hater, a transformers lover, or really any type of person. Call me tolerant, but it doesn't bother me and I hope professional athletes feel the same way. A person shouldn't be ashamed of who they are, or even if it "was" a choice, their likes or dislikes, as long as it doesn't harm someone. Being gay harms no one. It is a fact that all these athletes have played with a homosexual male or female and I don't recolect any stories of the athletes being raped, kiss raped, groped, etc by a gay teammate. It just doesn't happen. I have a lot more respect for Barkley.

By the way, let's not forget what today's herd of homosexualist "freethinkers" is defending. Just think of it. Put yourself in that room. Consider what that pack of homosexuals is doing there. Prepare for nausea. Now they're naked. At this moment whiskers are scratching testicles. And then.... Continue the picture on your own. I can't go on. Unspeakable.

Dabiggchill, you know studies show the more homophobic you are the more likely you are to be gay yourself...just saying dude.

Dabiggchill - high fives and pats on the back being tossed out for the 5 second liplock? Seriously? Just because an athlete is gay doesn't mean he/she wants to bang their teamates in celebration? The whole point of people openly stating they're gay has nothing to do with being sexual while playing sports. You've taken the whole message to such a ridiculous extreme that it no longer applies to the article at all. And I'm not sure that one or two people openly stating they're gay can be lumped in with the liberal agenda? Terrible comment, terrible thought, terrible morals on your part.

Wow.. 1st Freeman w/ his racist and biased rant about Obama & the lockout.. I don't even want to get into this subject.  I don't believe in gays & it being not a choice.  That said, that's my belief... I'm not here to thrust it down other's throats.  I just hope people respect my wishes to not have their beliefs thrust in my face.  Can you imagine high fives & pats on the back being tossed out for the 5 second liplock?  Leave this stuff out of sports... these guys aren't some sort of Jackie Robinson.. and the media will try to hype it up to be that way... why?  Its part of the liberal agenda... everyday is a new way to help desensitize America a little bit more.

Barkley: 'Every player has played with gay guys'

I highly doubt every professional basketball player has played with a gay player on the team; regardless, Chuck's right, a player's personal sexual preferences are nobodies business but their own.  I really think, to a certain degree, that players coming out is unnecessary.  I mean, if someone asks about it and you feel like divulging it, sure, but I don't run around announcing to my buddies that I'm a heterosexual, and nobody I know cares if a person is gay or straight, even living in a fairly conservative portion of the Bible Belt.  If you're friends with somebody, it shouldn't matter one way or the other whether or not they're gay or straight, because it's not your business.  Just as a great teammate and competitor regardless of his or her sexual preferences is still a great teammate and competitor.  Chuck, at least, can lay down some common sense life lessons every once and a while.

Sir Charles is spot on with this.  Good for him.

Why would anyone remotely give a sheet what anyone else does in their personal life?
