Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn apparently insinuates that the NBA Draft Lottery is rigged. Posted by Ben Golliver. david-kahn

Update: Here's video of Kahn's comments.

For years -- no, decades -- basketball observers have had suspicions about the NBA Draft Lottery. The process is hidden, ping pong balls are involved, and there are a bunch of hurt feelings because 13 of the teams present go home without the No. 1 pick.

Speculation about the lottery being rigged has always been a favorite custom of fans, but it's not something you ever hear spoken about, or even implied, by NBA executives. Until now.

Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn apparently implied in an interview with the Associated Press that the NBA's lottery process is not totally on the up and up.

Kahn's comments came after he joined Utah Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor and Nick Gilbert, the son of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, as the three finalists for the No. 1 pick. Nick Gibert suffers from a nerve disorder and eventually secured the No. 1 pick for the Cavaliers.
"This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines," Kahn said. "Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin: 'We're toast.' This is not happening for us and I was right."
A "habit" of producing incredible storylines implies that it's not intentional or manipulated but simply the product of a track record. But the disclaimer "I am just going to say habit" screams "I am really, really bitter because this was totally fixed so that the kid would win."

Either this was the clumsiest language of all time or a crystal clear implication. I don't see any other interpretations. Surely, a clarification is coming. (Not to mention an apology for referring to a child with a nerve disorder and a widow as "storylines".)

Even the implication of impropriety is sure to rub NBA commissioner David Stern the wrong way and this isn't Kahn's first time getting on Stern's bad side. Kahn was fined $50,000 last July for comments made regarding Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley's marijuana use. A fine here wouldn't be out of the question considering what's at stake for the league: its reputation.

Here's CBSSports.com video of Nick Gilbert winning the NBA Draft Lottery.

David Kahn insinuates NBA lottery is rigged?

If you didnt know from day one that the lottery is rigged, you are an idiot!   Remember the first draft lottery, when NYK(Stern's fav team) got Patrick Ewing?  Then when Jordan left the Bulls, they magically got the first pick, so this year when Clevelend get done dirty by Lebron, what happens?  Stern fells so bad for the Cavs, he gave them 2 top 4 picks.  I dont have a problem with it, just dont act its not happening, its pretty obvious.

You are a moron.  In the thirteen times in the lottery the timberwolves have never moved up and have held their spot(by record), only three times.  They had five one picks taken away for Joe Smith signing.  Meanwhie teams like Orlando, Knicks and David Robinsons Spurs have won the thing with 1 percent chances.  Figure it out ass munch. Not to m,ention there was no foulf play when the Grizzlies GM Jerry(mr. laker) West trades Gasol to L.A. for a bag of balls and then quits, this league is a scam and now even worse its going to be about a five team league when all these whiny players leave for the same big market teams.  Now thats a joke.

Kahn is just calling a spade a spade.  You just did not like what he had to say.  Sometime the truth hurts.

Watching the NBA is like watching football in shorts.  That's why a run-and-gun team like the Knicks, Suns, Nugguts will never win a championship.  Stern has allowed the game to become so physical that it's almost painful to watch.

So the NBA is so worried about the professionalism of their players, coaches and owners they institute a lottery to prevent teams from tanking the last 3rd of the regular season.  Great league.

A guy whose team just tanked the whole 2nd half of the season is crying foul? How about building a team that actually cares about winning before you whine. How is it that the Cavaliers had a 26-game losing streak, and somehow the Timberwolves still finished 2 games behind them? Even if the system is rigged (and we don't know if it is or not), why would the NBA be interested in rewarding such sustained crapiness like what has been shown in Minnesota? That team has had lottery picks year after year, and they still win 20 games a year. Only the Clippers are in that same league for futility. Say what you want about the Cavaliers, but despite all the injuries which led to the losing streak, then the trades, they actually fought like crazy the 2nd half of the season, and even beat the Lakers and the Cheat. Minnesota ought to be happy they got the #2 pick. Cleveland will save them the hassle of drafting yet another point guard. By the way Minnesota, change your uniforms. They suck. Go back to what you had at first in the 90's.

I do not believe it is rigged at all.....it seems to me, you should show some proof, evidence before you scream BS cospiracy theories. I am absolutely sure you can not provide an oz of evidence that it is rigged. I truly get tired of the screaming, something is rigged and no proof , no sign of anything being rigged(except your( team didn't get first in the lottery).
