Report: Lakers reach out to former Blazers/Kings/Rockets coach Rick Adelman regarding head coaching position.

Posted by Matt Moore

The Lakers aren't just giving former Blazers/Kings/Rockets coach Rick Adelman the courtesy of being on the shortlist. They're serious about pursuing him further as they inch towards a new head coach with Phil Jackson's vacant and extremely tall seat still warm. The Los Angeles Times reports that the Lakers have reached out to make conatact with Adelman about the position after a short list was determined Tuesday. From the Times:
The Lakers are slowly reaching out to coaching candidates, contacting Rick Adelman to officially express an interest in him to replace Phil Jackson.

The three decision-makers for the Lakers' coaching search — owner Jerry Buss and executives Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak — continued the gradual momentum from their meeting Tuesday in which they drew up an official list.

Adelman is such a perfect fit for the Lakers, it's painful. An experienced and well-liked coach who prefers veterans, Adelman's never had a roster as stacked as the one still primed to compete in L.A.. The Lakers want a steady hand with the requisite amount of influence, fame, and experience to take the reins from the retiring Jackson, and Adelman needs a legitimate shot at a title. There's never going to be a better cross-section of interests for the two than this.

Still, it remains to be seeen if Adelman has interest in the position or if he'll agree to an interview with the Lakers. The Times reports the Lakers fully intend to take their time with the selection, with former Cavs coach Mike Brown and current  assistant coach Brian Shaw still on the list. The Tiimes does confirm that any coach currently under contract (and thereby requiring the Lakers to provide compensation to their current teams) is not under consideration for the position.

You'd have to think Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol will be consulted on the hiring, as will the other Lakers executives. But if an interview is confirmed with Adelman, it'll be surprising if the NBA's Oden doesn't wind up the favorite for the position. Yes, I just made that nickname up.

The best man for the Laker job is currently coaching for the Cavs, yes, Byron Scott. He played 10 years for the Lakers and won multiple championships. As a coach, he took New Jersey to the finals twice and won conference semi's with New Orleans.

DON'T hire shaw.  Part of the reason for concern is because he too would have flamed out in the 2nd round just like the lakers and jackson did.  So if you put shaw in there, the same shortcomings we just saw with jackson would rear their ugly heads (like how Gasol is ugly .... yikes! what a face!)

Moving forward, kobe might like shaw but then kobe will overwork himself being the 'coach' and trying to run every aspect of the team.  he knows he can walk all over shaw and shaw won't have authority.  Adelman would be a much better choice.

If the standard for a team is having a real nice regular season and a good seeding position for the playoffs, and you have ready made talent on your team, Rick Adelman is your guy.  If your standard is winning a title, and anything else is failure, Adelman is NOT your guy.  The Lakers standard is winning titles, therefore talking to Adelman is completely stupid.

Adelman doesn't think quick enough on his feet to make the adjustments needed against smart teams in the playoffs.  He's proven it every single year.  Mike Brown is a better choice.  Far better to have a guy that took a one man team to the finals and lost than a guy who's had absolutely loaded teams with insane talent and never got a ring.

Another better option would be to go with an unproven brilliant mind rather than a proven playoff failure.  Find the next Thibodeau rather than a re-tread who brings nothing to the table the league hasn't already adapted to.  NO TO ADELMAN!

The Lakers need a coach that can control Kobe's ego and I don't think Adelman can do that. I know some if not most Lakers fans will dissagree with me but hey, it's my opinion Cool.

At the beginning of the season, I was hoping for Nate McMillan to replace Jackson. Of the current reported list of candidates; however, I like Rick adelman. His motion offense employs a high post option which would fit Gasol's and Odom"s skill sets to a tee. The low post-ups and back cuts featured in Adelman's offense would utilize Kobe's, Barnes', Brown's (if he returns)  and Artest's skills well. Of course, Artest is already familiar with the offense and Steve Blake would have a much easier time with the Princeton offense than with the triangle. In fact,I think Adelman's offense is a better fit for this Lakers' team than was the triangle.

Rick Adelman is soft spoken, affords his players freedom and accordingly works well with veteran teams. His resume should permit him to command the respect of the big name stars on this team.

"Adelman is such a perfect fit for the Lakers, it's painful."

Instead: "Adelman is a perfect fit for the Lakers."

That's sufficient. There's no pain, literally or figuratively, involved in being a perfect fit.

Hire Brian Shaw and let him caoch for next 10 years. Adleman has won an championship ring Shaw has a player and Coach with Lakers. Hire Shaw who knows how to win and players like. Why they are even looking elsewhere is stupid.
