Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose says the NBA has a "huge" issue with performance enhancing drugs. Posted by Ben Golliver. derrick-rose-usa

Update (2:02 p.m.): Rose denied making the "huge issue" statement to CBSSports.com's Ken Berger through a team spokesman. The Chicago Tribune reports that a source close to Rose said the question was phrased differently than was presented in the article. Here's more from CBSSports.com's Ken Berger, including thoughts from Miami Heat All-Star guard Dwyane Wade and an official statement from Rose released Sunday afternoon.

Original Post:

The 2011 NBA MVP knows what he would like to see changed about the league.

In a survey of PED use in various sports in the May 16 issue of ESPN: The Magazine, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose was asked to rank its prevalance on a scale of 1-10, with one signifying "What are PEDs?" and 10 meaning "Everybody's juicing!"

Rose's response: "Seven. It's huge and I think we need a level playing field, where nobody has that advantage over the next person."

By comparison, James Laurinaitis of the NFL's St. Louis Rams also ranked his league's problem with PEDs a 7. The only sports to receive higher rankings from their representatives: Boxing (10) and MMA (8). MLB was ranked a 5.

While PEDs have been an ongoing black mark for both the NFL and MLB, the NBA has largely avoided any controversy on the subject. Indeed, the general assumption has long been that NBA players would not resort to steroids or other performance enhancers because they need agility and athleticism rather than raw power and bulk.

A major reason for that assumption has been the lack of players -- especially prominent players -- caught by the league's anti-drug program. Rose's statement appears to call into question that program, which includes testing for both illegal and performance-enhancing drugs.

Its two biggest catches: back in August 2009, then Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis was suspended 10 games for PEDs. In January 2011, Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo suffered a similar fate.

But if the current policy isn't producing a "level playing field," what is it doing? If the league's strongest point guard -- a player who can get to the rim against every team in the league and who has a lot to lose by speaking his mind -- feels like things are unfair, this is potentially a very serious problem, right?

Derrick Rose: NBA has 'huge' issue with PEDs

Derrick Rose needs to keep his mouth shut. How does Rose know that there are lots of players on steriods in the NBA. dId Rose see these people use steriods. NO he didn't.
You seem to think you know more than someone who is in the locker room and off-season workouts and international ball experience with a lot of these players.  I'm not saying he has all the proof, but I am saying he knows a hell of a lot more than you.

Derrick Rose: NBA has 'huge' issue with PEDs

You're retarded man. I hit the gym everyday. Sometimes twice a day. I bet I can lift as much or more than Lebron and my body is not roid chizzled like his. I don't need water sitting in my muscles to look good. I take the pain of weightlifting and running like a man. These people who take steroids are pussys who cant be patient and work extremely hard to get the results they want. I have played sports my entire life and injuries suck but they happen. You have to live with them. I have a state championship in high school football and it almost nearly means nothing to me because half of the team juiced. Its not fair to the people who do it the right way. I will never root for a steroid user as they ruin sports. Your message of what steroids does is retarded. First of all what you're saying does not entirely describe what a steroid does to a person. Second of all there are extremely different muscle enhancers, energy boosters, recovery aids that come along with steroids that give the user a different outcome. None of that is fair retard. Two things I have loved to see. 1. When the Angels beat Barry Bonds and the Giants in the World Series and when a man in the Worlds Strongest Man Competition get hurts. Haha! Go Angels! PS - When you take steroids your muscles become tighter, your agility lessens and you tend to cramp up a lot because you never give yourself the time to recover or get the hormones produced by your body out of your muscles.

Derrick Rose: NBA has 'huge' issue with PEDs

SMAN2011, How are you vindicted for saying Lebron was on steriods and everyone called you a moron.   Derrick Rose didn't  say Lebron and Wade are on steriods. Rose didn't call any names out. Rose said the steriod problem was  a 7 out of 10 on a scale of 1-10. There is no proof that Lebron and Wade use steriods. No proof at all. Derrick Rose won the MVP award this season, maybe Rose took steriods to win the MVP award. I can make up stories too, but with no proof it means nothing.

Did you just use the word integrity and Rose in the same sentence?  Because as a Memphis Tiger Alum, I kinda remember our whole 2008 basketball season being vacated because Rose didn't take his own SAT...so I guess it all depends on your definition of "integrity".

Derrick Rose: NBA has 'huge' issue with PEDs

Sman2011, Just because Derrick Rose says something doesn't mean its true. Rose won the MVP award this year. Maybe Rose is on Steriods. Some with Kobe. You don't know these people.  There is no proof that Lebron and Wade are on Steriods. Derrick Rose has no proof. I think the whole Bulls team is on Steriods. No i am not Heat fan. I just want to see proof that Lebron and Wade are on steriods. Rose has no proof.  I think Rose is on steriods. Usaully the people calling people out have something to hide too.  You are not right. There is no proof. Derrick Rose needs to keep his mouth shut. How does Rose know that there are lots of players on steriods in the NBA. dId Rose see these people use steriods. NO he didn't. Did someone tell Rose, No they didn't. So it's either in his head or that is what he thinks, but has no proof its true. Or he was or is using steriods so he knows there is alot of players in the NBA on steriods.  If Rose knows so much, then why not tell on those players. Why because Rose doesn't know crap.  If you are going to say that on a scale of 1-10 , the NBA steriod problem is a 7 , you better have proof. Which Rose has none.
