Rockets to hire Kevin McHale as new head coach.

Posted by Matt Moore

Yahoo! Sports reports and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms the Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with Kevin McHale for the former Celtics great to become their next head coach. The report states the organization feels he can connect with their younger players and his career as a player will create a hunger for a championship.

The Rockets-Celtics connections are pretty strong, with GM Daryl Morey having worked in Boston before taking the reins in Houston. Unfortunately, all this glosses over McHale's disastrous campaign in Minnesota, which featured multiple stints as head coach and a rocky if not terrible run as a general manager. Rockets fans will have significant questions about the hire, and the most optimistic response so far is one of "Well, I guess it's okay."

It also means yet another position for which Dwane Casey has been passed over, though the Mavericks assistant's current obligations may have something to do with that.

Update 2:23 p.m.: Yahoo! reports it's a three-year deal, with a team option for a fourth.

Rockets offer McHale 3-year coaching deal

Vikingbob, I agree whole-heartedly with your statement, and I'm a diehard McHale fan.  There are those great players who don't think like coaches, only players, and I believe Kevin is one of them.  MJ seemed to fall into the same category with the Wizards, even though he was never actually a head coach.  However, there were a lot of free-agent coaches out there, so maybe the Rockets saw something that might blossom.  I hope so, but I don't see it.

Kevin McHale is a great guy.  He may be the greatest Minnesota Gopher of all time.  You could argue he was the best post player the NBA has seen.  He even did a great acting job on an episode of Cheers!  He is not a good coach!  He may be a great person to work with players, but on the bench he still thinks like a player.  Go nuts Houston if you think he is the man, but I think your gonna regret this one!

Report: McHale offered Rockets coaching position

Hey I'm A big McHale fan (as a player and commentator). But, everytime there's a new coaching position you just don't see teams taking a chance on new, young coaches with fresh ideas. Yet, the first thing you hear are complaints about these guys not getting a chance. Owners need to start hiring these guys. If they want to hire these guys hire them as scouts, consultants, something that doesn't deteriorate the chances of these teams acutally succeeding.

Report: McHale offered Rockets coaching position

Kevin McHale is just simple crazy to take one of the worst jobs in the NBA by being the head coach of the Rockets team. There is no doubt that the Rockets and there run down fans will ruine this once great NBA player in McHale and that's for sure. Plus the Rockets could have gotten a better head coach then McHale but I choose they both are perfect for each other and there run down fans to because they all know how to lose very good. Once again Rockets and there fans will be sitting at home next season and seasons to come watching the NBA playoffs at home again.
