Rockets to hire Kevin McHale as new head coach.

Posted by Matt Moore

Yahoo! Sports reports and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms the Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with Kevin McHale for the former Celtics great to become their next head coach. The report states the organization feels he can connect with their younger players and his career as a player will create a hunger for a championship.

The Rockets-Celtics connections are pretty strong, with GM Daryl Morey having worked in Boston before taking the reins in Houston. Unfortunately, all this glosses over McHale's disastrous campaign in Minnesota, which featured multiple stints as head coach and a rocky if not terrible run as a general manager. Rockets fans will have significant questions about the hire, and the most optimistic response so far is one of "Well, I guess it's okay."

It also means yet another position for which Dwane Casey has been passed over, though the Mavericks assistant's current obligations may have something to do with that.

Update 2:23 p.m.: Yahoo! reports it's a three-year deal, with a team option for a fourth.

The good old boy network never ends-fail in one place, bide your time as an assistant coach or broadcaster until one of your old cronies becomes a GM, and bing! you're back.  Nothing Daryl Morey can say can justify this hire;  I've always been very high on Morey, but this is ridiculous.  Nobody from the college ranks was as good an option as this group of retreads?  Not as good an option as McHale and his sparkling post-player resume!?  How about giving somebody a first chance with this clearly developing team?

Terrible hire.

Perhaps McHale would be a better coach than Casey, but not Frank, and definitely not Rick Adelman.  Getting rid of Adelman (or however one wants to slice it) was premature, and the men Morey was looking at to replace him were completely uninspiring.

Well at least the Blazers cant hire him for their vacant GM position. Not sure he will be a good fit in Houston. I don't think his style will meld well with the current roster. Time will tell.

The report states the organization feels  he can connect with their younger players

Nope. Could not do it for 10 years in various attempts in Minnesota, where he was responsible for building the entire organization. Bad judgement coming from an organization desperate for a playoff result. Good sales job, bad decision. Does not work in business or sports...ever.

The Rockets-Celtics connections are pretty strong, with GM Daryl Morey having worked in Boston before taking the reins in Houston.

The profligation of the Celtics players into coaching and organizational roles is a testament to their abilities to "teach" their players the professional game. Being a sub par employee in Boston with the Celtics seems (does not actually make...but seems to outsiders) to breathe life into so many careers. Morey, alas, and so many other GMs need to have their heads surgically removed from the asses.

What are Casey's current obligations? Did he sign a long-term contract to be an assistant coach without the possiblity of becoming a head coach?

Ok, so Mike Brown is gone, Kevin McHale is gone. Looks like Lawrence Frank, Brian Shaw or Chuck Person is coming to the Warriors. I'll take that.

Please no more retreads. Although if Rudy T. wants to coach the Warriors I'm open to it.
