Rockets to hire Kevin McHale as new head coach.

Posted by Matt Moore

Yahoo! Sports reports and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms the Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with Kevin McHale for the former Celtics great to become their next head coach. The report states the organization feels he can connect with their younger players and his career as a player will create a hunger for a championship.

The Rockets-Celtics connections are pretty strong, with GM Daryl Morey having worked in Boston before taking the reins in Houston. Unfortunately, all this glosses over McHale's disastrous campaign in Minnesota, which featured multiple stints as head coach and a rocky if not terrible run as a general manager. Rockets fans will have significant questions about the hire, and the most optimistic response so far is one of "Well, I guess it's okay."

It also means yet another position for which Dwane Casey has been passed over, though the Mavericks assistant's current obligations may have something to do with that.

Update 2:23 p.m.: Yahoo! reports it's a three-year deal, with a team option for a fourth.

A longtime Celtic great coaching the Houston Rockets. Doesn't seem right. There were better options.

Did they try for Clyde the Glide?

Rudy T's not that old, couldn't they bring him back?

John Lucas has to be bored from watching his kids play.

What about stealing Scotty Brooks from OKC like Bennett stole the team from Seattle?

I have said it before and I will say it again. Mchale was a good coach. Just get him out of the front office. He was a  very good deloper of talent.

As bad as McHale was as a GM in Minny, I'd take him back in a heartbeat over Genghis Kahn.  He was actually a good coach... but I think he'd rather be fishing than working most days.

Obviously the guy had a hall of fame career as a a player. He is in the top three power forwards of all time. He stint in Minnesota went better than his coaching did but that was damn awful. I got to know his personality from TNT and NBA TV so I think he should be fine in Houston. They will not win the championship but should be solidly entrenched in the playoffs. The thing he has going against him is that all great player seem to be equally inept coaches or GM's.

He destroyed the Twolves as a GM, not a coach. He was respectable as a coach, but I just can't see him wanting to coach very long.

Have fun in the lottery Rockets fans.  McHale is a butcher and will gut your team just like he did in Minnesota.  When will owners learn that star player is not the same as star coach or GM?
